NHL Talk - (News n' Scores n' Stuff) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I'm in the "fear nobody" camp as well. What I do fear is that our 1st round opponent will watch the Kings 3-0 win over us last week that sadly (or perhaps not) was not memorialized on this site, and get their team to play that kind of disciplined game. The Kings just snuffed us. Pressure all over the ice, no room through neutral, tough entries, vigorously defend the middle of the ice and the front of the net.

None of it is all that sophisticated - it just takes discipline and commitment and the Kings had it in spades that night. The Rangers can't play that kind of game. Columbus kinda can. Doesn't mean I fear them, but it does mean that there's a way to play us that makes the scales more even. Hopefully, Carbs is already thinking about how to counter teams doing what the Kings did.

I think parity has made “fearing” most opponents a thing of the past. There are rarely juggernauts anymore like the RedWings who beat us in the Finals.

That said, I don’t want Shesty to have a chance to Halak us, or Lavi spurring his guys to an upset. If that’s how the chip fall, so be it, but I wouldn’t prefer a Rags matchup.

This. Let the chips fall where they may, but I would rather avoid NYR for all these reasons.

Anyone who thinks the draw isn't important doesn't study history. The 1998 team likely doesn't sniff the Cup finals if the top three seeds didn't all lose in the first round. Our path to the finals was vs the 5th seed, vs the 8th seed, then vs the 6th seed.

Matchups matter.

The road to the cup pretty much scripted this season.
Round 1 will be Habs/Rangers/Jackets outside chance Wings
Round 2 will be Canes Devils winner
Round 3 will be Tampa/Panthers/Leafs winner

I’m not into the Sens or the Habs. Do not need the Canadian influence!

Anyone else is fine and dandy.

(Altho I DO think they could beat Sens or Habs 100%…..just would rather not)

Nobody saying “matchups don’t matter”. There’s just a general lack of the old fear of most opponents. I see 3-4 west teams that scare me a little, and 1 or 2 east, but there are potential spoilers everywhere.

I'd like to see Hutson and Caufield in the playoffs plus the Rangers going from winning the President's Trophy to being out of the playoffs in terms of fun, given CBJ seeming less likely

FLA in the conf finals should be a tough test, they obviously know playoff hockey. No one else in the east is all that scary, but the Caps scare the shit outta me every April since 1982.

The draw absolutely has a big impact on the outcomes. But ya still gotta beat the team in front of you each round. Don't really care who, is all I'm saying.

The '98 team arguably didn't belong in the final, if we wanna get all analysissy about it. Would it help if the Matchup Gods blessed us into the Finals? Sure. Would that help us beat a West finalist that didn't have a cupcake road? Probably not.

I'll take a Cup however it comes, but I sure wouldn't mind a "HOW did they win it?" story that doesn't make us sound like a team that Forrest Gumped their way there.

Yeah, there's some tough teams out there for sure. Could end up all boss fights. Feels like we have it in us to be the versatile type of team that COULD counter most styles. If Carbery can win the coaching battles and it's that versatility that puts us over, they should give him the Conn Smythe and let him go fountain-diving with the boys...

Habs are garbage - they're not even going to make the playoffs.

The Rangers will make it and hopefully pass the Devils for 3rd in Metro.

If you look at the remaining schedule, we have two more against the canes and then potentially a seven game series with the canes. We might be getting very familiar with them.

Yea, you know who is good at playing that suffocating style - the Canes. They’re definitely having a bit of a down year (after losing Pesce and Skjei). But, they’re definitely who I worry about the most (before even thinking about the Atlantic).

They like to pressure you everywhere with that suffocating forecheck. And their PK is very aggressive, like the Kings. Gotta be quick, and decisive to punish that kind of over pursuit.
