Detroit has won 4 in a row after its initial with McCllelan. Whether it’s a new coach sugar-rush, or something more durable doesn’t really matter. The move arrested the team’s downward trajectory and once again shows that I don’t know Butkus

Eh I think McClellan is a good coach (and certainly better than he gets credit for) but they're still a bottom 10 roster in the league for me and I don't think they'll continue winning at this clip. My guess is they'll level out right in that 20-25 range, which is where they still are now.

Coaching changes are like goalies. Almost impossible to predict.

I remember thinking the Caps would get a big boost out of the Hunter hiring.

This is the softest playoff year I can recall in a while for WC2 in the East, and I thought the Caps getting in last year was soft. (using points percentage to even things out)

Currently, Ottawa is sitting in WC2 as measured by points percentage at .526. West WC2 is currently Vancouver at .579.

Last year: Caps (.555) and Vegas (.598)
Two years ago: Florida (.561) and Jets (.579)
Three years ago: Caps (.610) and Preds (.591)

Will someone make a run? WC1 is also soft at .536 (Boston) and even Tampa is pretty low at .568 (lower than 4 of the 6 WC2 marks above).

There's also compression the other direction. Other than Buffalo (which is running away in the wrong direction), WC1 and 15th in conference are separated by just .073.

Yep, and his HDCF% is 49.67, which is good for just 265th in the league. Unfortunately, the great Alex Ovechkin is at 47.79, good for only 323 worst in the league:oops:. Context matters.

Yep and he’s like 20’something in HDGs FOR…

They’re aging…I just don’t find it funny, just sad. Nobody should want to see the greats fall off.

Boston is -20 in goal differential I think both the East WCs are going to be lower than the Caps last year

You might have something there - there's a handful of really good teams and a bunch of others. To buttress your point, I think ya gotta compare the WC2 spots at similar spots in each season, e.g., in those earlier years, what did the numbers look like at the halfway mark, or something similar. Also, the teams out of the playoffs start moving pending UFAs and others around now, and the possible contenders acquire them. I'm guessing many of the fringe teams improve their points %ages between now and season's end, partly due to feasting on the tankers.

Probably the corresponding move to claiming Kaliyev off waivers from LA. I was hoping Washington would take a chance on him and maybe they did but he’s off to the tire fire in New York.

Would be pretty hilarious if after all of these years of "Buffalo/Detroit/Ottawa are ready to take a step in the Atlantic!" it's Montreal who pass them. I still think TBL is significantly better than the field (including Boston) and that Ottawa will separate themselves from the pack a bit. Would love to see CBJ get in though.

Yeah and we just lost to dead last. It’s all tightening up
A few teams going through the struggle right now. New Jersey lost four straight including losses to San Jose and Anaheim before edging out Seattle last night. The Lightning and Bruins have lost four straight. Pittsburgh and Winnipeg have lost three straight. Every team will go through rough patches over the course of 82 games.

MTL's the hottest team in the East w/L10 of 8-2-0

noticed a handful of gms ago they beat FLA and TBL b2b, then VGK, and now COL/VAN the last 2 gms
not too shabby

with the poor state of everyone after WC1 in the East, just one good run can put you in the big dance
