I also think that taking over a club midseason requires a little more experience to handle. And as a GM I would assume you want some more stability instead of going out on a limb with an already messy situation.
Boudreau was a promotion in-season. Not sure out of the Cup winners back to 2006, how many were in-season replacements (maybe Lavi), but none at least come to mind who won immediately in that initial season. So yes, that experience and stability is a pro on the list for a vet coach hire.

Well, Mike Sullivan was hired in December and won back to back Cups immediately, but he inherited an obviously Cup ready roster.

Reading his Wiki, it says only 6 HC's ever have won a Cup the year they were hired mid season, however two others, Bowman (92) and Bylsma (09), also did it with the Pens.

Actually I think Bylsma was promoted in season and won in 2009. A true rookie HC.

Sullivan was previously a HC, but yep promoted in season and won.

Just more things in favor of vet hires if you’ve got a decent team.

Zero votes for the HC….interesting….

Lavi is next on the chopping block. They’ve made two big trades and still suck. He’s next to go if they can’t turn it around.

That team is a mess top to bottom.

Rags at FLA tonight. The home team likely a bit salty after two straight 0-4 shutouts (tho' admittedly, the first of those came prior to the Xmas break). How bad will it get?

My fear is they hit the lotto…..then bounce back.
They hit the lotto and got second overall and came away with Lafreniere and Kakko so it takes more than that. They really need some of their guys to bounce back and for some of their prospects to outperform expectations because even with a few expiring contracts, Shesterkin’s cap hit goes up from $5.6 to $11.5 and Lafreniere increases from $2.3 to $7.4. They’re pretty well locked into their current core unless they can find ways to offload Zibanejad and/or Kreider. Next year is also the last year that Panarin is under contract.

They actually remind me of the Caps when they bottomed out and got Leonard. Too many old heads making too much money and not living up to their contracts. They’ll need to either hope for a serum to make their guys stop sucking or retool pretty aggressively which is not easy.

There seems to be a lot of rot in that organization. Drury couldn’t have handled Goodrow or Trouba any worse and it looks like the locker room has quit.

They need to carve out those old hats that are hurting the room, or they need to fire Drury and Lavi and start over. Dolan is such an ass, it seems like he’s backing management to the detriment of the entire team. Maybe he doesn’t like the core players and wants to alter that a lot?

Any owner that would pen a manifesto about "horrific acts of violence" deserves all the suffering the sports world can heap upon him.
Every time I re-read the post it just becomes more and more insane. Publicly calling out a specific player on an opposing team is one thing, but also calling for the firing of a league employee (!!!) in the same statement is another. Honestly surprised they only got fined the $500k or whatever

Idk what goalie interference is anymore. Watching some of the ranger panther game and Florida player has his foot in the crease and Igor touches him while attempting to make a save. Ny challenges and loses the challenge goal stands.

How many times have we seen this called against us this year? To be clear I don't at all feel like it was but the way they've called it this year....

I just don’t see how they can justify keeping Laviolette at this point. I think the problems do go deeper than him, but it’s a start.

Starting over though... blessing and a curse to be NY team. Players want to play there so it's an attractive FA location but... Panarin, Zibanejad, Trocheck all have NMC. Fox and Igor have one starting in the summer. Kreider they could move since he only has 15-team NTC but other than that, what's there to move? Ryan Lindgren and Reilly Smith? Maybe you'd get mid-round picks, if lucky.

They are boned. I'd guess they are closer to moving their 1st round pick than moving any of their core guys, other than Kreider who they are trying to push out.

All players have their own motivating factors and interests. If the juju associated with any of those considerations become so bad, it's possible that NMCs can be waived. Whether it's team performance, locker room cohesion, team playing style, or something else, any one of those named above could decide they/their family/their careers would be better off elsewhere. Not to say that'll happen, or if it does that Drury or his replacement won't have limited negotiating options and trading partners, but if the shitshow continues I wouldn't be surprised to see some NMCs re-purposed.

'Course, I'd rather be 'saddled' with the Caps' GM headaches right now.
