They need to organize a World Cup instead so we have a chance to see Crosby/McDavid/Stammer all play on the same team. It has to be NHL/IIHF co-run and no gimmick teams. If they start organizing this now, they could very well have something in place by 2022-23

I'm getting a bad feeling about it all.

I think there is a better chance that the WJC will survive, because the European teams are already on site and in 'the bubble" after the long flight to arrive there. Also, I assume that all of the teams are fully vaccinated and regularly tested. I don't know whether they were planning to allow fans to watch the games in the arena, but if so, that is probably out!

I could care less if they ever have a World Cup again, and I think the NHL, by and large, feels the same way. If you look at the crazy interval pattern of years in between the event (1996-2004-2016), you can clearly see that the NHL management and players have mixed emotions about ever trying to resuscitate that tournament in the future. Team owners will only approve participation if the tournament is scheduled for the summertime, so as to prevent a season break. I have to believe that the European teams that have no possible chance of winning are particularly indifferent about it. There is just no pulsating demand for the tournament that makes it likely that it will ever happen again.

Is the KHL and other European leagues still sending players?

i doubt it. problem with corona in those leagues aswell. and why would any khlers and european league players wanna spend 5 weeks in quarantine in china.

Of course, yes. In principle a private league should have no right about allowing the players to participate at international events (World Championship, Olympics).

It's amusing to still at this point read about the supposed 5-week quarantine when there is no such precondition, as confirmed by Tardif. The NHL made the decision not to participate because of financial prospects, just like four years earlier.

I think corona also had a part of the decision.

What don't you and others that keep saying it's hogwash not get about that being a very realistic possibility?

You need two negative tests in a row in order to leave the country. Therefore, if you do contract it (vaxxed people are contracting and spreading it like wildfire right now) you could get stuck there for weeks...

As a player, I am not risking that

To sum up the official, confirmed quarantine rules:

You test positive, you end up in quarantine. Then you need two negative tests with 24 hours between them to leave the quarantine.

Or, to put it in other words: you get it, you'll be stuck in a small room. When you no longer have it, you'll get out of the room in a day. I get that being stuck in a small room in China won't sound like an enticing prospect to some, but the thing is - if you have it, you'll be stuck in a small room somewhere, be it in NA, Europe, China or even the South Pole.

I firmly believe Russia will take advantage of the competitive opportunities of having the best of the NHL gone from the competition, and an opportunity to win a second consecutive Gold Medal in hockey. For the KHL, it is an opportunity to promote their league on a World Stage with hundreds of millions of viewers watching them on TV, and I firmly expect the Russian government and the KHL to collaborate on filling the void. It is in their best interest to do so.

The IIHF had their own private transport system in place to avoid that, it has been stated many times

With no NHL participation in the Olympics, hopefully we can get a World Cup of Hockey instead in Late August/September, like we did in 2016. I attended several of the games in Toronto, and it was great hockey. It is about time we have another Best on Best tournament. Sucks that we will not see McDavid/Crosby for Canada, along with the exceptional players from other countries (Russia, USA, etc.). Hopefully, the World Cup of Hockey takes place, since the World Championships does not cut it in terms of Best on Best.

It's really frustrating... Only sport I can think of that can't figure this out and make it permanent. No one questions when the next soccer euro or world Cup is.

I get logistics are tough but it is doable

Mid season every 4 years
Cancel asg that season
Use iihf rankings... Top 8
2 pools
Pool winners go to semis
2 and 3 seeds play each other for semi spot
4th place teams play each other for placement.

Agreed. The NHL and IIHF are both to blame.

When the us president and British Prime Minister get together and get pissed at each other over a girl.lol.

It is ok as a summertime fun exhibition tournament, but it never has been, nor will it ever be a legitimate tournament that determines the best team in the world! You can't determine the best team in August, and one team has every single advantage, including having all games as home games, and referees that are Canadian citizens and residents! It was never designed or intended to be a best-on-best championship tournament. True, the credibility of the Olympics has been compromised by NHL money buying out the IOC so that NHL referees (almost all Canadian citizens) could referee the Games, but because the Olympics are held in different countries around the world, it is likely the closest we will come to a true World Championship tournament. But a World Cup, no chance!
