I understand that China + Covid + Olympics can be touchy. However, it's getting too political in here. Sorry for the deletions but this is not a covid board.

Rogers Arena in Vancouver has no bookings during the Olympic break. The other stadium there pacific coliseum has a lot of open dates as well. Maybe that could be a location for a World Cup

My thought of locations would be

Vancouver-Everett-Seattle venues

Vegas-LA-Anaheim-San Jose-Phoenix. Issue super bowl in LA so hotel issues.

95 corridor cities like DC to nyc venues.

my though of format. Each division at one facility play round robin + quarterfinal. One plays two. Semis and medal at one site.

I expect the final decision will much rely on what the players themselves are going to say. If a decisive majority of them say they want to go no matter what, they probably will go. If a substantial portion of them say "well, we would love to go but under current circumstances...", the NHL participation is likely to be cancelled. All I can say is that this decision is so problematic on multiple levels it should remain on the players themselves. They are making the game after all.

I need a best on best! It's been too long. I have no idea if it'll happen but I'll be so sad if it doesn't. And I'm rooting for a team with only a small chance of getting a medal.

If the NHL ultimately decides to pull out, would any players even be allowed to say "f*** you, I'm going no matter what?" They weren't allowed to in 2018.

Of course nobody could restrain them physically, but such move would cause such a conflict between NHL and IIHF (IOC as well) that I believe IIHF would decline such possibility, as well as IOC. It would be a huge scandal in the world of sport diplomacy. Plus such players would probably close their door back to the NHL, they would get fired by their teams. Much more realistic scenario is that with players using the CBA terms as their argument, and maybe bringing forth the possibility of a strike or something. But I still believe they will reach a consensus with the league, be it "yes, we go", or "we wanted, but sorry, COVID...".

I hope the players don't go.
China has been doing some horrific stuff to their people. They don't deserve to have pro athletes compete in their country.

I don't follow any other pro sports leagues. Is the NBA and NFL also dealing with outbreaks, or is this just an NHL problem at this time?

You can forget the Olympics it's not gonna happen, as more and more game are being postponed and the fact several players are weary of the quarantine period once you're in Beijing I would be very surprise if the players go now.

3-5 weeks quarantine?
Who else wants to take part? I don't even estimate KHL players. What kind of tournament will this be again?

So right now The so called "CCP" is already making exceptions.

Unvaccinated athletes will have to quarantine for 3 weeks when arriving in Beijing.
Vaccinated vaccines will skip quarantine.

Side note : (anyone entering china vaccinated or not, Chinese citizens vaccinated with Chinese vaccines will need to quarantine 3 weeks) EVERYONE NEEDS TO quarantine.

Vaxxed athletes and trainers gets to skip it it upon showing proof of vaccination and of course with a negative test since athletes are being tested everyday.

Athletes are allowed to go between venues to spectate. Shuttles are provided for athletes. (something that wasn't available in the Tokyo games).

Spectators only opened to Chinese citizens that are vaccinated. (no.... you're not forced to get vaccinated in China, you guys believe it or not.....)

in China, anyone getting covid will need treatment in hospital. No such thing as quarantine at home and will be discharged when negative. However hotels will be modified to act like hospitals and athletes will be sent there for recovery so it will be like they are living in a hotel instead of a hospital.

CCP is not forcing anyone or any country to come.

Yeah, and most of the North American posters here as well.

I actually view it as a part of the Olympics, as p***y ass teams don't deserve gold anyway.

Pains me to write this as we will all get robbed of seeing world class international hockey, but it’s in the best interests of everyone to stay home.

Quarantine laws in China could kill NHL participation in Olympics: report | Offside

"Maximum quarantine could be 3-5 weeks.”"

Maximum. They could be there for 2 days. From the people I know that got covid, they were sick for around for around 2 weeks. They will discharged when they are negative. It would suck for any hockey player to get positive on the last day of the games or something unthinkable like that.

I can empathize with these NHL athletes ,NHLPA and other hockeys fans. Unlike a Snowboarder or a skier who have no obligations after the 2 weeks, NHL players will continue competing for professional team they are playing for as they are under contract.

NHLPA needs to resort to plan B, which was the NHL resuming like they were not attending the olympics.

There is also a non-zero political risk related to the quarantines, due to diplomatic boycotts and alike it could very well be that the Chinese authorities are in no hurry to release athletes from these countries that have tested positive.
