LeBrun: NHL's Olympic participation facing new concerns and hurdles

Lebrun had an article giving an update on the status of the NHL's participation. Basically the NHL and NHLPA are still planning to go, though there is some concern about covid stemming from the all star game in Las Vegas just before players fly to Beijing. The PA is pushing to have things tighter than usual, though both sides want the all star game to take place. The NHL is predictably dreading breaking up the season to participate in the Olympics but it has an obligation due to the agreement in place with the NHLPA. The NHL's opt-out deadline for the Olympics is January 10, though it can opt out after that with a financial penalty.

I had no idea they are doing an all star break in an Olympic year. Must be a great money maker because that is a bad idea.

Yeah, basically the NHL and NHLPA want things to get back to business as usual as much as possible. There was also talk in the article that it was something that would please ESPN early on in their new broadcasting arrangement.

The ASG is garbage TV, but I'm not surprised it's a money maker otherwise why would they continue holding it, just for shits and giggles? There sure is zero "storyline" to it. And well, the NHL probably needs fewer reasons to axe Olympic participation than losing another source of revenue.

ASG in the Olympic year is such a nonsense. Let's hope there is no COVID outbreak emerging from that. Otherwise, the situation in China seems to be calm and under control, in the US it is a bit up and down, but no total disaster seems to be in sight. In Europe, the situation is very bad in many countries, which however should not crucially affect the Olympics. But let's see if this pandemic wave in Europe is already reaching its peak or if it is going to grow even bigger than now.

If there's concern then just don't do the ASG. Seems pretty simple to me. The Olympics are far more important.

You're talking about the NHL and NHLPA. Shouldn't expect them to take the obvious, sensible route. At least the players are apparently pushing for tighter regulations at the all star game and surrounding festivities.

Exactly. I have never understood what exactly is so cool about ASGs. It is not even a competition. Tried to watch it once or twice, was boring as hell.
Show! It sthe Show! Wrestling isn t a real sport too, but very popular in US. The Show has a big meaning in NA. For me very foreign this attitude,
but unfortunately that's the way it is

Yeah, I know that The Show means a lot to many people in the NA, I can maybe see some cultural reasons why, but I lack the empathy to really understand this phenomenon from within, so to say. To me as an European, this mentality is very strange.

Now the show is also playing a role in Europe. But not as exaggerated as in the USA.

Was wondering, If the NHL pulls the plug on players to Olympics, what will happen with the schedule that already has a 3 week gap?

My best guess is that all the games after the weekend of April 9th/10th will be played during those 3 weeks in February.

I still expect the NHL players to participate at the Olympics. The epidemic situation in China (which has been the main concern) seems to be under control as by now. Of course something can still happen, you can never know.

Lockdowns in Czech usually mean lockdowns everywhere... hope it is just passing through.

With the Islanders now having games postponed, I wonder if it will start to feel inevitable that the NHL pulls out.

I read, I think from either Friedman or Lebrun, after the Ottawa games were cancelled that it would take a decent number of cancellations before the NHL would withdraw. That could always change though. The players are apparently spooked by the idea of having to quarantine in China for three weeks if something happens at the tournament.

The problem is not the situation in China.
Its the situation with the players.
If you test positive, the chinese will lock you in a hotel room for 2 weeks.
No exemption, none nada, nothing.

They had cases even with the bob sled guys cup and those are not many people.

Also you cannot just fly out of the country if you are injured.
The covid protocols in place prohibit that.
you have to spent 21 days in a bubble before you can go around freely.

An injured Olympic athlete was flown home on a cargo plane because of Covid rules in Beijing.

Players tested positive may be some problem, but this was something everybody knew before the agreement was made. This is absolutely nothing new, the situation did not change in this respect since they signed it. If a player is tested positive in the NA, he is quarantined too, under very similar conditions. The only problem may be with injured players, but this is something IOC can solve officially by setting a rule that you can leave the bubble but of course you can never come back. Quite easy. If IOC says this, the Chinese surely won't cancel the entire Olympics because of that.

The main problem may be the new COVID variant scaring the world right now. I am afraid they may cancel the Olympics as the whole because of new travel restrictions. But let's see.

There is zero probability that the US might boycott the Olympics. Diplomatic boycott means the politicians are not travelling there, has nothing to do with the athletes. US athletes will be there for sure. Covid restrictions are the real threat to the entire Olympics.
