Wasn't that guy part of EK65 trade

Yes he was. Montreal did pretty well considering their role in the EK65 trade. Got to get rid of Hoffman and Pitlick, acquired a 2nd round pick, and got a 4th and a warm body for the 2.3 mil they're retaining on Petry here. This specific part of the whole thing isn't all that impressive with the retention figure but them being able to unload Hoffman free and clear onto us probably makes this easier to swallow. They were able to save about 500k on cap after the two deals.

The 1st round pick for Marleau when he was traded to Carolina is no longer relevant as teams are not getting as much for retaining anymore.
It's still relevant as it is still the standard of cost. There are just lots of different ways to mitigate that cost with retention or cap dumps. Marleau's situation was very specific in what had to happen.

But will they regret it in 5 years?

Does Lafreniére signing for $2.3M x 2 imply that he didn't get any offer sheets? or is that too grand of a conclusion to draw?

I just can't imagine he's too happy in NYR, but maybe he's sold on the new opportunity with Laviolette
