Kessel played one shift ro keep consecutive games played streak and then flew back home (private charter) to be there for child's birth.

sad news for his family and the entire Sens family. As maligned as he was in the media and by fans, this is still really shocking and saddening.

(Re Melnyk.... in reading through obituaries, he's been fighting this since 2015 or longer. Made a public plea for liver transplant in 2015 which gave him 7 years. Team is set up to "stay in the family" so my guess is his young -- probably teenaged -- daughters will be the recipients/owners.)

News out of the GM meetings....

NHL and NHLPA to talk (agree to) filing no-trade lists with Central Registry and NHLPA. Also to talk about "extending" cap into playoffs (perhaps agree that 20 players dressed for game have to be under cap).

Cap going up $1m next season ($82.5m). Players on track to pay off $1B in debt after 2024-25 season (so expect big jump in cap for 25-26 season).

World Cup 2024 will have countries only (no "Team Europe" or "Team North America U23").

Lots of discussion on officiating (with nary a word said publicly due to threat of fines).
