NHL moves to a hostage model for viewing for Canadians. Only on SN NOW, no more NHL live for Canada.

So instead of paying NHL LIVE people will be paying Sportsnet Now and have the same games? Only thing changing is who you pay?

I think the main gripe is that Sportsnet Now is crap product. Constantly buffering, crashing, sometimes blurry picture, etc.

I can get better with illegal streams, which is ironic because SN has a commercial saying that all of those things happen with illegal streams but I only get those issues with their own product.

I have not used NHL Live so I don't know if it is better, but I imagine it is.

I use both Sportsnet Now and TSN app with friends/family..
Sportsnet Now lags, buffers, randomly turns off etc..
TSN app runs way more smoothly atleast way more times than Sportsnet Now
I’ve used the TSN one, but I think they were talking about NHL live, for some reason I thought that was a US one not a Canadian one.

What you just described was pretty much my experience with NHL Live last season. So I guess it will be more of the same for me.

If you just watch the games on "TV" and live in-market, there's no difference....correct?

I have SN in my cable package and use SN Now using the cable account to watch it a bunch when I'm not near my TV. Does this mean I can watch any NHL game without paying any more money or do I have to pay for it separately through SN Now?

You need centre Ice for that, unless Roger’s is different.
Has anyone confirmed yet if NHL live is available in Canada , or is it that what Roger’s calls Centre Ice ?

Yes Cable is much better whether it’s fibre drop or cable, much more control over watching/ replaying plays, etc, and not worry about buffering or other issues . Learnt the hard way.

NHL live was decent the last few seasons, but this year got really bad once they started using feeds from NTN (TNT?) and ESPN. It became so bad I cancelled my subscription.

I don't know what has become of Sportsnet Now recently but I didn't like it. My main issue was simple: I wanted to watch a game and pause it several times to go fulfill the normal responsibilities of adulthood then get back to it and finish the game. It couldn't even do this properly. If I paused it too long it would just jump forward missing big chunks of the game and worse of all if I waited too long to watch the bloody end of the game it wouldn't be available any longer. It was absolutely terrible.

This is how I think it works in the US with ESPN+ so it may be similar with SN Now

If you have an ESPN+ account you can watch some of the games available on tv in your region , however, you must have a centre ice or nhl.tv subscription linked to ESPN+ if you want watch out of market games, excluding TNT and local team.

I could be doing it wrong and It'd be nice to reduce a 200/ month tv and streaming subscription down to 20, but I haven’t figure out a way to do that.

I guess that the NHL / NHL.com doesn’t want to bother maintaining the streaming service and the expenses around doing it and drive everyone to the rights holders who have ample resources.

Rogers runs NHL live in Canada. Who is being paid is not even changing.

Streaming quality on SN now compared to NHL Live and app functionality seems to be the sticking point for those that realise this.

That’s all I care about, turn on the tv and watch. Not sure what the big deal is.

Its a big deal for people who live outside the official Leafs region. They get games blacked out on their TV and are forced to rely on these streams.

Not an issue for me now, but I lived in Montreal for awhile and was forced to get NHL Live to watch.

It’s not a Toronto thing lol, it works that way for 32 teams.

That why you need Centre Ice, or whatever Rogers calls it , NHL live, or if in States, the equivalent.
