I'm Away From My Desk
GoW, COD4, and then MW2 were where life peaked for me.
Modern Warfare 2 was some of the best online gaming that will ever exist and the voice chat in those lobbies would be considered war crimes today.I was thinking, "That was before the internet was big for gaming, right?" Then I figured out you meant a lower tier game than I was thinking about.
Halo 3 came out two weeks before CoD4.CoD “4” was the OG legit. I want to say halo 3 was just after and then the mad house free for all went away.
Rainbow 6 was in the mix or the last remenants of the Wild West.
So people could introduce themselves and wish their opponents good luck before the game started.Thinking back, it's wild that games used to have pre-game open lobbies for everyone. And this realization predates being a parent, the second game started doing away with those I was thinking "wait, why was that a thing?"

I don’t see why it’s not still a thing.Thinking back, it's wild that games used to have pre-game open lobbies for everyone. And this realization predates being a parent, the second game started doing away with those I was thinking "wait, why was that a thing?"
Now it’s blaring mumble rap or some Brazilian music directly onto the mic to drown out your own team. The days of deep throating your mic and screaming like a banshee pre-game. Must intimidate your opponent.

I don't want to pick tip but in Storm Hawks, a character named Finn said, "[reading bottle] Skyside Shanty's Signature Extra-Potent Quadruple-Malt Vinegar?"I am no closer to narrowing down my movie quote than I was on day 1
Because beating people is fun and making them mad is even funnerer.I still don't understand why anyone would want to go online and play against strangers, all of whom suck, but going into a lobby and talking to them before the game starts is quantum orders of magnitude more f***ed even than that.

Nice list, Jojo. The Crew was the first one that came to mind as a game that is not rules-complicated but engagingly complex to win.Ok, so you know a lot of the big, broad names. That’s helpful. So is Catan being too slow.
I would look into these. Everything is roughly medium weight, shaded to the lighter side. Not everything will be up your alley. The point was to give you a shotgun of games our groups generally enjoy. All are officially Wife Approved.

That's like half the people who play DMZ.Well, brother, you see sometimes magic happens.
While playing Cold War we saw the same guy a few times and boy was he terrible. That’s how we noticed him after all. However after one particular smashing of his side… he joined our group chat asking if he could play with us because he remembers us from a few games over the last few nights and we destroyed him.
Now usually we’d be like “GTFO n00b” but when I tell you this guy was an angel sent down from heaven I mean it. He was a fifty year old aww shucksy guy from the south that was just playing to get some time away from his wife. I’m not kidding you when he actually said “aww you got me!” and then giggled after most times after he died.
This guy was absolutely terrible at the game but he was living his best life and I respect the hell out of it.

Here is our current household lineup:

To the recommendations for @DancingPanther, I would add Organ Attack! and Trial by Trolley.
What flavor Play-Doh is that?Nice list, Jojo. The Crew was the first one that came to mind as a game that is not rules-complicated but engagingly complex to win.

Thanks, Jojo. We liked but didn't love Dead of Winter, but I think that was more the group we had than the game itself. We prefer the cooperative games, and Pandemic got a good work out over the past few years. We enjoy Splendor, too, although some of us -- i.e., not I -- have the strategy figured out better than others -- i.e., I.Great collection, Bern. You know you’re walking into a fun house if you see games or a well-used piano. How did you guys like Dead of Winter? My wife loves it, so it comes out relatively often. But it’s mostly if I make a move in another game she didn’t like. It’s like a warning shot.
I see Splendor in there too. That is another really good game, @DancingPanther. Another very easy to learn, difficult to master type.

Thanks, Jojo. Our good friends are well into Pandemic Legacy and have raved about it. Thank you for seconding their endorsement. If you like Pandemic quite a bit (and we do too), Pandemic Legacy Season 1 is one of the best games we’ve ever played. I had everyone sign the board and got it framed to hang in my office when we finished the campaign.
(Red and Blue are the same game with different boxes. Don’t pay a premium for one over the other. It’s usually a huge difference for some reason.)

Are there any single player board games?
Absolutely. There are a few ways you can go with this. There are solo games like Maquis, Iron Helm, Mini Rogue, and Warp’s End.
Basically all electronic versions of these games have competent AI players. Or for physical options, some games like Wingspan have completely different solo modes that come in the box.
Anything co-op like Pandemic can be done with you controlling more than one character. A more in-depth option would be something like Cerebria: The Inside World. If you really want to go nuts, you can even play Gloomhaven solo. Control 2-4 characters as you wish. People often play Mage Knight solo.
There’s an entire community out there dedicated to making solo rule sets for games too. You can find them on the BoardGameGeek forums or Solitaire Board Gaming: Get together and play by yourself • r/soloboardgaming among other places.
And then there’s the cheat code — Tabletop Simulator on Steam. Look at the Steam Workshop for that game and you’ll see what I mean. I can’t describe it for….reasons. But I will say that many companies have official translations for their own games there because it sells physical copies.
I’m taking a refrigerator magnet, so I’m just gonna go I think. I saw someone take a ‘beer glass opener’ is that just your standard bottle opener?Aiyah.
Let's just run it back. We start the day with @Strawberry Fields on the clock, @Striiker on deck, @GKJ on the lido deck, and Bernardo on the lido afterdeck.
Yosh.
