I moved this post out of the locked thread that had no links to your other claim about Russia's intent.

Let's start with what is known, that the NHL and PA have to review Voynov's eligibility.

So a ban in NHL automagically means ban in World Cup? Sounds like another reason why a tournament ran by a league is a bad idea.

So Voynov's NHL ban is still there despite his retirement from NHL?

Interesting, if we imagine Datsyuk somehow receiving 10 game suspension at the end of this season and he would retire without serving it, would he be allowed to participate in the tournament?

Are you guys familiar with what Voynov did and how it could be difficult for him to be approved to enter Canada or the US?

With regards, I think this is a completely separate issue (which might or not be an issue).

As in, this isn't what the NHL is reviewing. His inadmissibility would be determined by the CBSA.

The NHL wouldn't be doing its job if it didn't find out ahead of time if Voynov is even eligible to enter the country given his record. No doubt that's part of its review.

Why?

If a player was banned by the IIHF would they be to participate in IIHF tournaments?

Considering what a joke the IIHF is at least with the NHL we know it is a legit banning and deserving penalty.

Plus it's likely all for nothing anyways as it is doubtful he is even allowed in the country anyways.

Yeah, but they don't have, or shouldn't have, a decisionnal power in that regard.

Imagine how many players the nfl would have if they banned every player convicted of a violent crime..

Most of those players couldn't have been threatened with deportation...

Any sort of pondering if there is any sort of "test ball" element towards the organizing party and its home countries here is probably completely off-limits at least at this point? Namely I mean the sort of questions if Russia intentionally named Voynov to the team to get a reaction, for some reason.

It would be great if Russia withdrew from this tournament – not because I am sympathetic to Voynov but because then this would be even more of a joke.

I wonder what they would replace Russia with.

Team Retired perhaps.

Patrick Roy, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, Mike Modano, Mario Lemieux, Brendan Shanahan, Theo Fleury, Al MacInnis, Temmu Selanne, Eric Desjardins etc.

Just think of the ratings!

I've wondered that too. Surely the Russians knew there could be issues with naming Voynov to the team.

Love the idea! Just think of how amazing it'd be seeing these retired players face the national teams of their own countries. It's so epic that I can't believe the brilliant Garry Bettman and his buddies didn't come up with it before!

Even if they replaced Russia with a retired team this tournament would still be lightyears better than the WHC.

If its against Canadian law to admit someone with a domestic violation offense to the country, fair enough, but if they are treating his case in accordance with the rules governing NHL players, he is not an NHL player. His participation would not reflect on the character of NHL players because he isn't one.

This would offer a graceful way for KHL owners to ban its players from participation. The KHL happens to be headquartered in Russia, and its owners are some very powerful people. There is no known benefit to the KHL in participating, so if Russia participates at all, it should be limited to NHL players, whether they are the best players or not. I don't think anyone in the RHF or the KHL gives a damn about winning the World Cup.

It's not a separate issue but the core issue. He was suspended pending the judicial process. The criminal case was a plea bargain that was reduced to a misdemeanor if he plead no contest. The deportation matter is handled by US Immigration. He left the country before anything was issued, iirc.

Without being able to enter the US or work here, he cannot fulfill his NHL contract.

Now, the other part hinges on Canada and if they would deny him entry, also why the PA is reviewing this with the league. In that sense, it's not really up to the league to "approve".
