I would love to get comments from the players who went to the optional practice. Similarly when the Leafs left early, every single player said they wanted to so they could avoid the bad weather.

I'm 100% a union person, and believe in them and the rules 100% and can fully understand that things can be influenced by power dynamics, but at the same time, there does seem to lack a bit of common sense.

So Wyatt Johnston felt peer-pressure to be there but Sam Steel and Colin Blackwell didn't?

One guy leads the team in TOI for forwards by 2 minutes, is the most relied upon center, the other two are fringe NHLers/4th liners.. and the budding superstar felt the pressure to be there..
None of that has anything to do with it not being allowed.

Perfectly reasonable rule that is not obscure. Stars broke the rule. Stars got fined. Guaranteed that nobody is going to forget how to play hockey due to not having practices during that period. This isn't complex.
exactly, its not that deep. The organization broke the rule, they got fined, everybody moves on.

Can you explain the point to me since I missed it? The assumption that this was a practice, even though the players were already on the ice as DeBoer entered the facility? That's some serious team practice right there.
You're aware the CBA is an agreement bargained between the players and the NHL?

Dallas should be fined. Some portion of the players who showed up likely felt like they had to or it would look bad.

The players play a shit ton of games and unlike the NBA, the NHL is a full contact sport.

Let them have a few days off to do something other than hockey around the holidays, sheesh.

Investigating the important things of course.

Not stuff like LTIR cheating on way to a Cup. Or diving on way to a Cup.
They were asked if they wanted the rule modified at meetings, and declined, could be revisited again.
It’s optional practices that need to be addressed of course.
And yes they should be addressed, just like the nucks and leafs were fined,

I suppose a weather exception for travel could be considered in a future CBA.

But I can't really agree for an optional open ice during a winter break. Let it be their break.

How did the NHL find out about it? A player called the NHPLA and the NHLPA called the NHL.

Lets see who the next player traded out of Dallas is
Their coach mentioned it in an interview. It’s the use of the word “practice” instead of player skate, and whether there were any guys there from the coaching staff. If it’s just players skating together, then there’s nothing wrong. Players skate together outside of the league scheduled practice times often. But there can’t be coaches from the club there.

Dallas’s coach told the media, I guess he will be gone.
It’s posted in the thread, what the coach said.

Also can’t be club facilities.

Eh, what do you expect? That a fringe player will be honest and tell he'd rather spend the rare day off with his family?

Yes it matters that this was optional. Inevitably, a player who opts to practice will have some type of edge over a player who opts not to practice. Specifically they can use that time to better prepare themselves for the upcoming game (film, working on a play, winning favor with the coach etc.) which will incentivize the coach to give that player more playing time and opportunity.

I fully support rewarding those who work harder and are more dedicated, but the NHLPA (speaking on behalf of the players) decided that nobody should be able to get a leg up for prioritizing an extra skate over time with family/friends.
