NHL investigating Dallas Stars for CBA violation (upd: fined)

I'm not making excuses, I'm just amused by the reaction from the league and I suppose from some in this thread.

Plus the wording that made it sound like much more of an issue than it was - hence the "nothingburger" comment because neither the team nor the players have been affected negatively by this in any way.

There was no "implicit pressure" either. I couldn't even tell you who attended this optional skate - or if ANYONE did, for that matter.
I mean contractually the league reacted the only way they could.

I thought you’re allowed to skate, it just can’t be team sanctioned?

Is it the fact that it being said to be an “optional skate” that it’s somehow team sanctioned?

I thought guys had “captain’s skates” on the 26th all the time. It just couldn’t be with the coaches and staff and you didn’t have to participate.

Can't involve the team at all... including facilities

Oh I know, I'm sure once word got out then the league probably felt they had to send out the press release saying they were "looking into it"......but I'm willing to bet both the league and Dallas's front office probably had a good laugh over the whole thing.

The league that sent out a memo days before reminding teams, hey no players are allowed at team facilities this holiday break.

It seems like they care.

NHL added in some new rule in the memo which says you can't provide ice now. Says nothing about that in the CBA. NHL is trying to dictate the lives of players who want to skate on their day off.

lol why would you hold any team activities on holiday break

the only team activities during that break should beers with the boys

I don’t really understand Dallas at all. The risk/reward of having an “optional” practice during the break is unpalatable to any team with some sense. As if a single practice is going to make some huge difference? They should throw the book at them. At least a million dollar fine. Something they notice. I’d be disgusted in my team if they did this. It’s just so stupid.

For the 100th time, there was no practice. The facility was open to the players some of which decided they want to come and have a skate for the day, their choice.

Players were on the ice and skating before coaches were even in the building.

I really don’t care about the semantics. What they did was dumb as hell and makes me think they are a bunch of f***ing idiots.

So you don't even know what happened, why it happened, or any details but have come to a conclusion.. a very serious one at that.

Good day to you.

They had an optional. The coach said they had an optional. It’s pretty black and white what happened but go ahead and homer on.

I feel like you do, because you appear to be under the impression that this was a mandatory practise enfoced by the team over Christmas.

It wasn't. At all.
No

You're a cba expert? Friedman said the cba says that you're not allowed to provide ice time to players on mandatory days off.

The nhlpa is the one wanting this, I don't get people who put everything on the nhl as if these aren't provisions wanted by the players union.

That is irrelevant though.

So far it seems all 31 other teams got the memo and weren't idiots. You weren't allowed to have players in the facilities personally working on their game. It didn't have to be a "practice" to break the rule. Any single player, even if Seguin wanted to skate around, breaks the holiday break.

Uh huh. And Dallas gave their players the option to hang out anyway, likely knowing full well that management would get a wee slap on the wrist which is exactly what happened.

Nothingburger.

No expert, but I can look up the document and read it. Sure.

(b) December 24, Christmas Day, and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel, and no Club may request a Player's consent to practice on such days for any reason, provided, however, if December 26 falls on a Saturday and the League has scheduled NHL Games on such date, December 23 may be substituted as an off-day for all purposes, including travel, instead of December 26.

I don't see anything about players coming in and using team facilities like Captains skates. Maybe there is something I am missing though?

Friedman said the NHL sent a MEMO that stated you can't provide facilities, so again like I said at the start.. the CBA and the MEMO contradict what is allowed.

actually that’s 100% wrong, it is in the CBA. (mod)

It’s not like it’s a new rule. Canucks got fined a dozen years ago for it. They even reminded the teams,

The practice, optional or not, is a violation of Article 16.5(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA. The section reads as follows:

(b) December 24, Christmas Day and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel, and no Club may request a Player's consent to practice on such days for any reason, provided, however, if December 26 falls on a Saturday and the League has scheduled NHL Games on such date, December 23 may be substituted as an off-day for all purposes, including travel, instead of December 26.

So on your day off you can't go to the team facility by your own choice and hang out, go for a skate, and get a meal cooked by team chef?

North Korea I guess.

It's right there... for all purposes.

You seem false hung up about the practice line. Again, league connected people said the fine is happening and said teams can't allow guys to train on the ice at team facilitates. That's part of the day off mandate.

There's no indication other teams do this. Dallas was just really really scared of the Wild and had to get some extra skating in.

Again you make the Korea joke, grow up... get smart. This is the nhlpas demand. It's the union, the collective of the people saying we won't allow work this day. Call it communist China instead if you
