NHL/hockey TV ratings 2024-25

It's not a bad idea if you cut out some of the bullshit before the actual resurfacing.

Only about half of the intermission is resurfacing. The other half is random "Games" used as a mask for a sponsorship plug.

But where will I be able to see fans tear their ACLs fighting each other inside big zorb balls if they shorted intermission? ☹️

ABC weekend numbers?

Yeah, I think I mentioned earlier this season that this season I'm at having access to Nielsen numbers for the daily Top-100 (used to be 150) on cable and daily primetime only on broadcast. As well as once a week full cable numbers. Frequently delayed, as happens more and more.

So I don't get to see any numbers for daytime or weekend afternoon sports on broadcast. I have to ask directly, which I don't like to do, or just wait until PR or (SMW) Jon or Braylon asks, gets and posts them.

There was some kind of Nielsen issue yesterday, usually would get all the info in the morning, instead sports #'s appeared via various sources in the afternoon, night and this morning. The Top-100 I got hours later than usual last night.

So figured Nielsen delay, but since still haven't seen them anyway, I asked and was told that the Nielsen list they got didn't even have the NHL on ABC games listed. So that at least explains why we haven't seen it yet. Hopefully tonight, or tomorrow.

Not super surprised. A bland Flyers-Kraken matchup and a completely gutted, seller Bruins vs Lightning

Yeah, when the national broadcast schedule was released all of us pointed to the Kraken-Flyers game. That # was entirely predictable (FWIW Kraken-Stars on ABC last season did 584k, so at least Kraken on ABC games are consistent, ha.) Ridiculous scheduling.

That as the lead-in didn't help but also was immediately post-trade deadline (less than 24 hours later) as you alluded to.

I had said on X post-trade deadline, night in advance of the game: "I'd still pencil in 1.1M [what that window had been doing] though obviously wouldn't project much of a lead-in which could knock it down to 1.0M."

Was off a couple 100k-plus. I'd say it was a little of both, post-trade deadline and lead-in knocking it down a bit more than I estimated.

It will be interesting to see the rating comparison between the four teams on TNT vs Leicester City/Manchester United on NBC at the same time slot.

That game is on USA. So cable v. cable. Issue would be for those that want to compare is that both TNT games today are non-exclusive which puts a dent in "like for like."

As of today we have 6 canadian teams in the Playoffs with the odds of the 7 teams in the Playoffs very slim and 5 as the likelist scenario. You guys think that could cause a big drop in the numbers?

In the first round U.S. markets have co-exist regional broadcasts that cut into the national numbers. So when it's a Canadian team that's one (or two if CAN v CAN) less option(s) to not be watching the U.S. national broadcast. So it's more about how far they advance, but where it's really made up and why I'm always harping on "two country league" and think/wish Canadian numbers were more available/shared (even by the league) is that the numbers up north increase when a Canadian team is playing. And they increase significantly over U.S. v. U.S..

Stanley Cup Playoff numbers should really operate on "North American audience" but a long history, particularly from U.S. sports/sports business media, of ignoring that Canada exists and that it's a two country league. That there's national broadcast rights in both countries. They know they get more clicks/comment/article shares for blanket "NHL ratings are down" headlines and/or "[insert series does poor #]" (meaning solely in the U.S. which they never notate) so it wouldn't surprise me if that's coming for any of those potential games involving Canadian teams but it'll be usual uneducated nonsense, unless any given series does poor numbers on both sides of the border. Which is possible any given season with certain U.S. v. U.S. matchups but less likely when a CAN team is involved -- about worse you can get is the Jets getting 1.0M in CAN and a weak 250-350k in the U.S.. Of course that's only reported as 250-350k because that sells better than 1.3M actual average audience in the NHL footprint.

I feel alot of NHL PR stuff has been NA focused recently instead of just calling out US numbers.

I feel alot of NHL PR stuff has been NA focused recently instead of just calling out US numbers.

They started doing it more in the playoffs last season, and did it for a majority of the 4 Nations Face Off. It's PR, so it's used that way -- when it's an 'event' or big combined number, they share the NA number.

So it may feel like a lot if the only numbers checked are the handful of 'event' #'s, but it's very little if you're checking #'s day-to-day in the playoffs and/or weekly in the regular season -- i.e. odds we get North American #'s for tonights doubleheader on TNT, TVAS and early game SN/late game SN360 are near zero.
