-NHL on TNT avg viewership Wednesday-

Rangers-Sabres did 406k on TNT. Don't have the truTV simulcast # yet, will update when available (probably next week.)

Wednesday’s Rangers-Sabres NHL regular season game averaged 478,000 viewers across TNT and truTV, down 11% from a non-exclusive Bruins-Devils game last season (538K). The Rangers’ win nonetheless ranks as the fourth most-watched NHL game on TNT Sports this season, with three of the four most-watched games this season airing in the past three weeks.

Those MLS CUP numbers are pathetic.

Yea that MLS Apple deal was a test if the other major leagues would take the plunge and do an all streaming deal and so far this was been a disaster. I think the NFL is the only league that could take that risk.

The problem with their idea was that it was not enough to subscribe to Apple TV to watch your local team play. You had to subscribe and then get an additional package on top of it. I think had the package come included with every Apple TV subscription, it would have driven interest. Instead they made it so only die-hards would go along with it. A shortsighted decision IMO.

On queue here is some good analysis on that topic https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/12/mls-apple-impact-ratings-rights-deal-exposure/

An all streaming deal could work but not an all in one streaming service deal or at least that's what the MLS is showing thus far we'll see after the World Cup and if Messi ever plays in the MLS Cup game how the numbers move.

You can view games with just MLS season pass without needing Apple TV subscription. However, Apple TV subscription allows you to view a few selected games a week without needing MLS season pass. The problem is that you need one of the two subscriptions to view games blocking out a lot of fans. This could have been resolved by making one or two games a week free to watch but I am sure Apple wanted it behind one of the two subscriptions options to drive subscriptions.

All streaming doesnt work without a local linear option. Everyone forgets that the NFL has an anti siphoning policy, meaning every game still has to be available on linear in the local team's market

Flyers-Red Wings averaged 418,000 viewers across TNT and truTV, 36% up Islanders-Capitals on TNT alone last year (307K)

Panthers-Wild 161,000, off 12% last year’s Kraken-Kings (182K). full doubleheader averaged 285,000, up 15%.

-It was H2H with Sunday Night Football. So it was never going to do a good number.

-As of roughly a week ago the U.S. avg was down 28% from last season per SportsMediaWatch. To me, that's just the up/down nature of the NHL on U.S. TV. Two years ago it was down 22% at the same period, by the end of that season everything was fine. Last year was up and everyone was celebrating the U.S. cable #'s, then the ABC games were down big from the previous season. Once you follow it long enough, that's just how it goes.

-If the Winter Classic did anything special we would have saw something today. Likely see tomorrow and just hope it beats last years disappointing number or at worst, doesn't fall below 1.0M.

Thanks Reaser, you are a rock in this section, som im calling you Jack Reaser from now on, from over here its hard to keep track of NFL(well actually not with Internet, what i mean is, its not front news and talked about in swedish at all) , a little bit about NBA now when a swede plays for Miami Heat, MLB not much.

yeah beacust rhe numbers generally is low, only a couple of near million can change much.

Have a good 2025 man and thanks for the numbers

I wouldn't expect special numbers by the Winter Classic, the entire vibe of it this year seemed geared toward only the local markets and not a national audience like before. I think they've more or less conceded that the bloom is off the rose
