Considering a lot of Ranger fans are Yankee fans too, that’s a decent rating considering the WS involving a New York team. You have too high of expectations of what regular season NHL games should rate. Anything above 500K+ on cable is a win imo.

expecting a league that considered one of the “ big 4” not to be outdrawn by the likes of the freaking wnba is not to hard of an ask.

MLB regular season games on TBS get similar numbers. The reality is NFL and NBA are the only sports with national appeal. MLB is a legacy league so they still get some decent attention when Yankees and Dodgers are playing. NHL for all its issue and problems marketing and promoting the sport, still has value as a TV product.

We, or at least I, aren't getting the runtimes for all games this season so we can't put together the average. Which is unfortunate, since we'll have to depend on PR #'s/releases or PR-adjacent (SBJ, SMW, etc.. who just use the PR #'s) which they can just exclude games if they want -- e.g. I wouldn't be surprised if when TNT's average comes out that 109k is just unilaterally excluded. Happens all the time, like last year the Heritage Classic as well as a non-exclusive game that didn't do well were just excluded from TNT's regular season average. Why I think it should all be public information so people can put together true averages, which we don't get when leagues/networks/media can just put out any numbers they want.

We can of course do the napkin-average, even though it's averages of averages which isn't proper math. I actually think it tells a better story since in cases like this, it gives each game broadcast equal weight. I've done both over the years, but it's hard when not all information is available and even when I did get it all, it wouldn't match what ESPN or TNT Sports PR (or SBJ or SMW) because they exclude games.

Either way, one can just add up all the xxxk's and divide by # of games. It gives a # that tells the story well enough.

I do find it interesting that some companies just arent paying Nielsen to track their ratings anymore. Apparently thats why its been difficult to get numbers for college football games on the SEC and ACC Network, and CBS' 3:30 Big 10 games
