Did anyone ask CMac what he's going to do with the cap since he has to make a move to insert both Landy and Nuke in the lineup?

@The Mars Volchenkov ?

One possible plan:

Start the season with Gabe on LITR for the first month until Val is eligible to comeback in November. Then shed Val's contract with a trade or contract termination if he agrees.

A healthy Gabe playing at a decent level would make up for the loss of Val's two way/net front/big goal importance to the team.

And shedding Val's contact, plus another big cap jump in 25-26, could allow them to keep Mikko, Drouin, and perhaps LOC. Not sure on George. That plan is probably very much in the air.

They could also trade Colton as his NTC shifts to a M-NTC and replace him with Ritchie's ELC.

If it plays out like this, the Avs potentially could end up in a good spot cap wise in 25-26, with some extra cash to add a good defenseman and/or goalie, which they may end up needing.

Vegas downgrading from Thompson to Samsonov. You hate to see it. Vegas' roster as it stands:

Barbashev - Eichel - Stone
Howden - Hertl - Dorofyev
Holtz - Karlsson - Roy
Brisson - Johnson - Kolesar

Hanifin - Pietragnelo
Theodore - McNabb
Hague - Whitecloud

Hill
Samsonov

I smell a playoff miss
They'll go get someone like Necas, Marner, or Pinto.

And Montreal was a few wins away some years ago. So was Dallas. Tough shit.

And as we know, some teams will collapse after a deep playoff run or win it.. like Florida. I'd bet against Edmonton making it again to the final. Old legs, long season.

Walker was overrated due to his analytics IMO, because he could skate the puck out of the D zone well.

His actual play wasn't that impressive. Not that good defensively and didn't produce much offense outside his first few games as an Av.

He's like a top six/bottom six tweener, but as a defenseman.

Don't think a contending team should want him playing on the 2nd pair, and ideally a contending team that needs to spend their cap wisely, shouldn't want to pay a third pair D man $3.6M.

This 100%. Objectively, it's a good contract based on what others got today even if it's a year or 2 too long. But unless something changes with the Canes (and I wish him luck) I don't see him as a 2nd pairing guy on a contender, and that's a lot of money for what he showed in the playoffs for us on the bottom pair.

He's a solid player but has a short track record of effectiveness.. so committing 5 years to a guy like that has some risk to it. I don't think it's a bad contract but not the steal it's made out to be (unless you're comparing it to Lybuskin or Edmundson)

Yeah it's a fine contract for him, just not for a contender IMO because it ties up their cap, and a spot on the D core.

The thing about Walker is that he doesn't have a niche. He's not what you want on the top 4 of a contender; but on the bottom pairing, he doesn't PK well enough and block shots like a mad man. So in the playoffs, he won't make those extra inch plays where he'd make a difference. No one is making enough mistakes for him to take advantage of in the playoffs; the match ups he face against are either gonna crush him or play conservatively.

I'd take Mikkola for example over him especially at their different price point. We already have Girard who is similar in that regard.

Overall happy with what CMac did. Got back Drouin for a year and can re-sign him next offseason when/if the cap goes up, then added some depth up front and on the back end. Above all, he didn’t make any of those crazy deals that got handed out today (thanks to the cap situation, but still).

Rantanen is a superstar. He is over 100 point per season player. No one trades them these days. We might need to trade Coltz or Sammy and resign Rants.
