Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. They both go on a nice streak like a quarter through the season then end up disappointing their fans when they dont make the playoffs

For the Wild I'd say a team that's never great, but never bad enough to go into full rebuild or get a really high draft pick. Stuck in 'not horrible but never great'.

Trying to think of a recent team to compare to. Maybe the San Diego Chargers in recent years? There's got to be a better team here, but I can't think of one. Toronto Blue Jays?

The Braves had a lot of success in the early nineties though didn't they? Pretty sure they won one World Series and lost the Greatest World Series to the Twins in an upset. Them getting upset may yield to your point though.

Yeah they won one world series and appeared in others. They were an amazing regular season team and they got upset quite a few times in the playoffs which kinda reminds me of the Blues.

But at the end of the day, the Atlanta Braves actually won something. Outside of three straight SCF appearances about 40 years ago, the Blues haven't done jack squat.

The Maple Leafs are the Detroit Lions or Cleveland Browns....pick your poison

Edmonton Oilers and 49ers HISTORICALLY for a myriad of reasons...

- Both franchises have 5 Championship titles

- Both have 4 Championship title wins in the '80s, 1 in the 90's

- Both had a GOAT franchise player lead them to 4 titles (Gretzky, Montana)

- Both had a player step up and lead them to a title in the absence of that GOAT franchise player (Messier, Young)

- Both have a very high win percentage in Finals and almost same number of appearances ( Oilers 5/7, 49ers 5/6)

- Both have made it to the finals ONCE since their glory days and both lost (2006 Oilers, 2012 49ers)

Very similar IMO. The big difference is the Niners are still consistantly good and the Oilers have been bad for a long time now.

49ers fans are probably not pleased by this comparison but its hard not to see the similarities historically. Had alot of friends who were fans of both teams during the glory years for basically the reasons listed.

Dallas Stars- Dallas Mavericks. Both have had great runs in the past 15 years or so, been to 2 finals, both only won once. Both had that 1 face of the franchise (Dirk and Modano) and both currently have great offenses but can't lock down on D

Blues are really more like the pre-2004 Red Sox or like the pre-implosion Astros.
Teams that tend to lose in heart-breaking fashion and are never quite good enough to win anything.

Also, Buffalo Bills are a good comparison.

Buffalo Bills is actually a perfect comparison. Scary, really.

Neither franchise has won a championship despite making multiple finals appearances in their respective histories (in a row, mind you).

Both franchises have a memorable playoff performance (Frank Reich's comeback against the Oilers for the Bills and the "Monday Night Miracle" for the Blues).

Both franchises have an infamous playoff loss (The "Music City Miracle" for the Bills and the Yzerman goal for the Blues).

Both teams' fanbases consider themselves cursed.

Yeah, it's like looking in the mirror.

I wish people around town would stop with this Blues/Cubs nonsense. It's lazy and makes no sense, so it's nice to hear perspective from people outside of the baseball crazy bubble that is St. Louis.

The leafs are the Knicks. Long drought, massive fanbase that still pays the team absurd money despite the eons long struggle for relevance. Same 'the fanbase isn't patient enough for a rebuild' ethos. And a similarly obscenely large local fanbase.

Kings are the New York Football giants, because they may not take the regular season seriously, but once they're on a run, they'll win another title regardless of how improbable their path to it is.

And the Blues are the Peyton Mannings, deadly in the regular season...less so in the postseason.

The New York Rangers are the Boston Red Sox. It's to a T.

-Strong early success (Red Sox were a juggernaut in the 1910s, Rangers won 3 championships pretty fast)

-A legendary curse caused by a single action (Selling Babe Ruth, burning the lease to MSG in the cup)

-Extremely long championship droughts (54 years for NYR, 86 for the Sox)

-A star-studded 70s in which they were improbably overshadowed each time they had a chance (Rangers by the Bruins and Habs, ....Bucky ****in Dent)

-A nigh-miraculous playoff run to finally break the damn curse (Rangers with the Matteau heroics, Red Sox coming back from 3-0 down)

-Strong recent success

Panthers and Marlins. Not just location. Money troubles, rebuilds, both teams coming towards end of rebuild now, from 1993, and some moments in the past.

Except the Marlins have won the ultimate prize in their sport, twice.

Nashville Predators are the Tampa Devil Rays of hockey (i.e. a team that has historically overachieved given its on-paper roster)

Blues=Red Sox

Not every year for the Sox, but really good playoff caliber teams where there is just always 1 team that's better.

I'd say post-Aikman Cowboys is another good one.

Rangers are the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL.

- Talented player who only delivered this year (Romo/Nash)
- Last championship ~20 years ago (95/94)
- Franchise player who is a certain HOFer (Bryant/Lundqvist)
- Disliked by the fans of all other teams
- GM is a total moron trying desperately to get back to winning the championship (Jerry Jones/Glen Sather)

Montreal Canadiens are like the New York Yankees of hockey

New Jersey Devils were similar to the San Antonio Spurs, for a while (small market consistently making playoffs and occasionally winning championships)

Detroit Red Wings are like the New England Patriots (consistent playoff team that wins a championship every so often)

New York Rangers are like the Dallas Cowboys (self-image is heavily inflated relative to number of recent championships)

Toronto Maple Leafs are like the New York Knicks (sky high ticket prices, everyone in the lower bowl wearing suits and playing on phones, and they both have big followings despite being awful most years)

Edmonton Oilers are like the Jacksonville Jaguars or New York Mets (you just shake your head)

Philadelphia Flyers are like the Philadelphia Eagles (fans always predict they'll be better than they really are, haven't won championships in forever, hooligans in the stands)

Pittsburgh Penguins are like the Cleveland Cavaliers (only good attendance when they have superstar players)

Funny coming from a fan of a team with the 4th worst attendance.

Not to offend anyone south of the border...but isnt that the case in most of the US markets?

Angels are the Sharks of baseball. They'll have a fantastic regular season only to inevitably choke in the first round. This past year for example:

Angels: one of the top teams in the league in regular season, get swept by WC Kansas City in the ALDS

Sharks: had a great regular season (111 points) and blew a 3-0 lead in the WCQF to the Kings.

Angels have had Sharks-esqe seasons ever since our WS victory in 2002
