Don't even have to wait that long: take D with our other four picks in the top 75 this year.

Only issue with that is the percentage of those taken in the latter rounds never really turn out to be much of anything.

Hughes
Dobson
Boqvist
Bouchard

All have high impact potential in the NHL.

Wahlstrom, Tkachuk, Hughes, and Bouchard are sitting there in that scenario. That's basically my next tier. What are the odds one of them makes it to nine? Not great.

Bit of groupthink and lack of projection on how each players game will translate at the pro level.

That's a bit dismissive. No doubt there's group think on these boards but there's also a lot of fans making independent assessments based on what they see. A strong majority of those assessments end up in favour of Wahlstrom. A fair number of scouting services are on this side as well.

Your assessment lines up with the NHL scouts. Pretty much all of them. That doesn't mean it's more informed or insightful.

My opinion is just as uninformed as anyone’s. We will see on draft day.

It’s a draft of favourites. Everyone has one. A number of posters like Wahlstrom. As do I. I am the vocal advocate of Tkachuk but I’m secretly hoping we draft a C or RD as I believe that’s the better long term need for the organization.

I have Tkachuk ahead of all the D outside Dahlin. I have a positional bias with the D because of the timeline and uncertainty around dmen. And you are far more likely to find impact D in later rounds than forwards.

After Tkachuk I have Hughes, Bouchard, Kotkaniemi, Dobson, Boqvist.

Man I'd have such a hard time getting excited about Bouchard. I don't know what it is exactly but I just don't see him being so successful at the NHL level, and any inclusion in the top 10 I have given was due more so from the perspective of others. I don't want all of the internet to point their guns at me but he just keeps falling down my board. I get a Cam Baker vibe from him.

I think he fits our system perfectly. Best passer in the draft. And a sniper on PP.

I don't understand how an objective comparison of Wahlstrom/Tkachuk (Prospect Ramblings: Brady Tkachuk vs Oliver Wahlstrom) meshes perfectly with the opinion of 95% of people on hf boards, and then NHL scouts are unanimously in the other direction.
I like Wahlstrom more. I think maybe Brady has more potential to be a driver, though.

Wahlstrom could be an elite complimentary player, but is pretty close to a one trick poney (the obvious elite goal scoring but also some body checking and overall gusto in his game).

While Wahlstrom is chilling out in the slot, hoping for the puck, Brady can be seen mad dogging for it around the net. He’s nothing if not involved.

I prefer Wahlstrom. NHL teams might prefer using top five picks on guys who spend more than the blink of an eye with the puck. Wahlstrom spends more time puck-less than Brady. Wahlstrom also spends a lot less time involved with his opponents. Brady is always in the mix and on the puck. Wahlstrom is usually chilling and waiting for it.

Tkachuk is the consensus 3rd overall. I don’t agree with it. I suspect that apart from the really stupid reasons (surname) and the patently false reasons (nhl ready) the logical reasons for his sky high ranking have to do with things like overall touches, and general impact to game play apart from getting his shot off.

Physical tools are even on these two. Wahlstrom is also a good skater and is also a big strong kid. Brady chooses to use those things more. I like Wahlstrom better.

I don’t agree, but that’s the perfect cautionary comparison. Good job!

Fans having concerns about Tkachuk makes sense. Guy had eight goals for BU this season. Eight f***ing goals.

That’s a consensus top three pick? It’s asking a lot for me to look past that and just focus solely on the magic of scouting. Tough to completely ignore relative (for top three picks) trash production.

If you take him top five and he ends up a bottom six forward, everyone and their mother will say, “How could you be so dumb and not see this coming? He had eight f***ing goals! It’s so obvious!”

I get that there’s more to it. I’ve got him in my top ten for that reason. I just can’t get him into my top five. No way. Not with eight damn goals, man. I’m too basic for that.

Hate for Tkachuk on this board is insane, it is even worse that Tocchett thing at the start of the season. Most haters trapped by his stats. Guy with big frame, soft hands, hockey sense, great vision hated just for random digits. Dylan Strome had great numbers prior and after the draft and what the results? I seen motivated Tkachuk at WJC an I am admired since then. I dont mind his NCAA stats, guy has the tools and tons of potential to be a star.
