NHL and Rogers in agreement on new 12 year, $11 billion CAD Canadian TV deal

You'll see Rogers shares trend down. Good time to buy them because they'll go up once they announce a deal with Amazon to share the costs of this deal.

I'm curious if they will want to expand upon their partnership with Amazon in order to offset the costs. Perhaps Amazon will have Monday Night hockey plus a share of the playoffs.

I wondered about this too. Not only did they pony up for Bell's shares of MLSE they doubled what they are paying for NHL rights. It's also not a stretch to imagine they are going to lock themselves into a long term contract with Vladimir Guerrro Jr.

I'm fascinated by what Rogers shareholders think of this. Likewise if I'm Bell I'm happy to not go down this rabbit hole when there is sports content that could be had more cheaply.
Roger's stock is down 7%. What a horrible investment it has been over time. I have NO idea how this company survives. One of the worst run companies in Canada - and that is saying a LOT.

As for the Jays...

On the weekend, I was shocked by how few people were at the game. How they will afford Guerrro is beyond me?

**

I've switch my carrier twice in the last year and my cost for internet/TV/phone was cut in half - just over $100 a month. I am sure Rogers customers will do the same. This is NOT a healthy industry.

People have been calling for the end of this company for years - the debt, the poor investments, the overpayment for sports... I could see it happening. I cannot believe they agreed to this deal. No one in the investment community can.

My guess is Rogers is going to sell off inventory to whoever wants to pay the price they set. Otherwise it makes 0 sense. They never made money on this in the first go around, so why pay more to just do it all over again?

I can see Amazon forking over a large sum to them for an expanded inventory, maybe even the whole out of market package, which if I had to guess would not include playoffs. Rogers will want those for themselves. They'll probably still do the CBC thing they've been doing just to be able to access the HNIC IP.

Has Amazon's Monday hockey experiment really worked well enough to give more money to Rogers? <-- sincere question.

I just don't know who would buy 2nd hand hockey from Rogers at this point?

I agree with this online poster - post taken from "Stockhouse"...

"I sold my position in this stock...there is just too much debt and they continue to spend like drunken sailors...and this is money that they do not have. This stock is a huge debt trap. Good luck everyone."

12 years is a long time but in the near future they're looking at consistent playoff appearances from Toronto, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Ottawa/Montreal are in the mix and then Van/Calgary aren't in tank mode.

Rogers stock slipped at the opening bell, but so did the entire TSX. It will be a fun to watch the Rogers and Bell stock prices in the near future.
Rogers still down 6.5% while the TSX is currently up.

The people at Rogers are either geniuses or idiots. I leaning towards the latter.

As I have said many times, BCE is the tortoise and Rogers in the hare. I bet on the tortoise.

Realistically, what other option was there? There's no chance the NHL accepts a front loaded deal with less term, and as long as current sports watching trends hold, hockey in general is going to be the driver in terms of ratings in this country. And considering that Rogers is realistically the only game in town, they can very easily accept the demands of the NHL.
Roger’s isn’t the only game in town. TSN is better.

It was said multiple times that the current TV deal was too expensive. That it would be really hard to make good money out of it AND now they are willing to go for another 12 years.
As for the french TV rights , it was also said that TVA sports paid too much for the current deal.
It's PKP's fault and i wont cry about it. Back then Sporstnets wanted to launch a sportsnet Québec in french but when PKP heard the rumours he decided to launch his own channel .... it kinda bit him in the ass.
I have no idea how it will turn out this time arround.

Good on Gary he got another great deal for the league with it looking like more to come.

I hope they negotiated a few improvements on access such as blackouts...but I doubt it
