On his birthday, the Oilers hired rookie GM Brant King to lead their team back to the path of the modern day NHL team. The youngster had a plan and instituted it right away, signing 7 European Free Agents.

GM BrantKing on some Roster Decisions
On Rattie, Slephyshev and Aberg in minors: We feel, that in our teams current state, we've got some goood scoring wingers. Ty and Pontus are good, but they're young they can develop a little more, and we feel that's whats best for them. As for Anton, this is less about him and more about the signings we've made. He will be back up.
On Noreau and Lindholm being depth: I'm going to tell youguys what we told them, they were signed with the intention of playing, and they will play, just at this point we feel our opening night lineup gives us the best chance to win. It's up to them to work their way into those plans.

Still failing to climb the standings, the Oilers struck a deal for a scoring winger. Sitting 7th in the Pacific, and failing to surround McDavid with the right blend of scorers, they went an acquired Wayne Simmonds, along with depth defenseman Johnny Oduya for Anton Slepyshev, Jujhar Khaira and two 2nd round picks.

Duthie: Welcome to all you watching in Canada as we here at TSN update you and specifically follow your Edmonton Oilers. Were gonna take you right to Craig Button to find out what rumors have been surrounding the club.

Button: Thanks James, and the Oilers are an interesting team to look at. They still find themselves outside of the playoffs, and would probably be surefire sellers if not for the 7-game win streak, but I'm not convinced they should buy. That being said, they're going to have trouble sellings because their best pieces that are expendable, a la Milan Lucic, Andrej Sekera and Kris Russell all come with anchors of contracts. Michael Cammalleri will likely be moved but that's about it.

McKenzie: And just as you say that, in comes a trade, as they've traded Cammalleir to the Winnipeg Jets along with a 4th round pick in 2019 for Marko Dano and a 3rd in 2018.

LeBrun: They've also shipped Al Montoya to the Calgary Flames for a 3rd round pick and goaltending prospect Nick Schneider. Not a big deal, but one to not in a deep 2018 draft.

Dreger: The Oilers have also announced they've placed Kris Russell on waivers. The veteran defenseman has seriously underperformed this season, and the Oilers need to make a push here. He is not likely to be claimed.

Ferraro: While that is ture, the Oilers are surely hoping someone takes that risk, because they've got an impending cap crunch on the horizon between these deals, Lucic's and Sekera's contacts, and McDavid's impending extension.

Biron: Interestingly enough, they didn't acquire goaltending help which means they have full trust in Talbot and now backup Laurent Brossoit to hold the fort down.

McLennan: I'm not so sure that's a great bet as Talbot's been streaky and Brossoit is largely unproven at the NHL level.

Duthie: Well, that's all the time we have, but we'll see you at the Free Agent Frenzy this offseason!

BREAKING NEWS: Oilers miraculously clinch playoffs after winning spree.
April 1st, 2018
The Oilers won 5/7 going 5-2-0 heading into April and that surge clinched them a playoff spot. Just any 5 wins wouldn't have but 3 came over divisional rivals Calgary, Vancouver and Los Angeles. Laurent Brossoit was a major reason behind this with his improved play. The 25-year old now owns a .917 SV% in 10 GP.

The Edmonton Oilers finished 3rd in the Pacific Division and settled for a matchup with the San Jose Sharks. The two teams finished just 3 points apart in the standings, so the series should be close. The Oilers are at a clear disadvantage without their #1 goalie and #2 center, but survived those odds to make the playoffs and will hope to ride the momentum through round 1. The Sharks and Oilers split their season series with 2 wins apiece but the Sharks got an extra point in a SOL.

Series Recap
The Oilers narrowly escaped a collapse that would've been a tough one to swallow. Cam Talbot looked poised to lead the team into the 2nd round, but an odd game totalling 114 shots in regulation overworked him and re-tore his groin. Pius Suter was an unsung hero for the Oilers in this series with 3 goals.

In the 2nd round, the Edmonton Oilers face the Vegas Golden Knights. The Knights were a WC heading into the playoffs but knocked off the Pacific Division winning Ducks. The Knights run off of speed and incredible goaltending from Marc-Andre Fleury, while the Oilers are trying to push through with the inexperienced Laurent Brossoit and their superstar Connor McDavid.

Resign Phase

The Edmonton Oilers couldn't fool around during the Resign Phase. With just 2 picks in the first 3 rounds of on eof the deepest drafts in recent history, they failed to capitalize on that opportunity. With just $10.000M to resign a glut of NHL players deserving raises, they had their hands full.

The Oilers allowed Patrick Hager, Maxime Noreau and Mark Fayne walk to Free Agency.
Despite his successful run with the Oilers, Noreau cited wanting a bigger role with his new team as his reasoning.

The Oilers also bought out Kris Russell and his contract.

Duthie: Hello, and welcome to TSN's 2018 Free Agent Frenzy. It is July 1st, and the players who want to change teams can now sign anywhere they'd like. Whether is be money, or term, or location; whatever the reason, UFA's can leave their clubs and seek new ones.I believe we have a Trade to announce before though, right Gordo?

Miller: We do. The Oilers have traded Andrej Sekera to the Arizona Coyotes for a 2nd round pick in 2019 and a 3rd round pick in 2020. Sekera was one of the Oilers best defensemen last season, but they wanted to rid themselves of his albatross contract and Arizona was one of the only teams that could take it.
They've also traded Zack Kassian to the Philadelphia Flyers along with a 3rd round pick in 2019 for Corbin Knight and a 2019 7th.

McKenzie: The Oilers have signed two legends. Jaromir Jagr and Jarome Iginla will both join the Oilers on 1-year deals. It is unclear where they will fit in with the depth the Oilers have, but they will both be on the roster.

Ferraro: I don't like this at all. They've got their young guys, and the NHl in trending faster. That was supposed to be the goal of GM Brant King, but here he is just getting older and slower.

McGuire: I think this might be what the Oilers were lacking actually. They have their fair share of fast skaters, but they really missed the true veteran voice. Not the 32 year olds, they missed this. These are 2 40+ year olds who have seen it all. They can really help be leaders on this team.

Dreger: Thomas Vanek has signed a 1-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers are loading up on offense and this gives them a legitimate sniper they really don't have.

O'Neil: This is the signing the Oilers needed. Their PP sucked all year last year, and Vanek is a guy who can help that. The Oilers will be a force to be reckoned with next season.

Season Preview

The Oilers enter the season with Cam Talbot as their starter. Laurent Brossoit backs him up, but proved capable of subbing in as starter should Talbot struggle out of the gate like last year.

The Oilers return defenseman Adam Larsson, Eric Gryba, Darnell Nurse and Lawrence Pilut from last season. Oscar Klefbom also comes back, but the Oilers hope to see a revamped version of him, excelling at both offense and defense. Jay Bouwmeester joins the team after a trade. Matt Benning serves as the depth defender.

Edmonton has the best forward depth in the league. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Jesse Puljujarvi, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Antti Suomela, Ryan Strome, Marko Dano, Drake Caggiula and Par Lindholm all return. With the addition of Thomas Vanek, Jaromir Jagr and Jarome Iginla through Free Agency and Pontus Aberg from the minors, the team looks to be led by high powered offense.

Duthie: Welcome to TSN for our annual Trade Deadline coverage of the National Hockey League. Were going to take you straight to Craig Button to highlight some questions around the Edmonton Oilers, and some parts that could be moving.

Button: Well, the Oilers are certainly having a great season. That being said, they are expected to have a great season every season with Connor McDavid. They are in no rush to win now. Theres urgency, but they have a long time to win many Cups. That is where Wayne Simmonds comes into play. Halfway through the season he's headed well towards the best of his career and the Oilers start talking contract. He doesn't want to commit, but he's willing to talk. Since then hes gone fairly silent with just 5 points in the last 23 games. Not a good look. The Oilers stopped pushing and it seems they're not willing to take the gamble and they're now shopping him. They hope to solve their 3 problems with one deal. A) A replacement for Simmonds, B) Defensive help while Bouwmeester's out and C) 4th line help. I don't know which team can offer all three, but I'm hearing Columbus, Dallas and New Jersey have been kicking down the door for him.

Ward: It's certainly a risk to trade a guy as influential and who can really take over a game when you sit 1st in the League. I don't know if it's the right move, but all signs point towards it happening anyways.

McLennan: The Oilers will be this good for a long time. If they can get anything near that 3-piece deal for Simmonds, a guy that might not even resign and if he does is on the wrong side of 30, then you take it.

McKenzie: Breaking news here. Pending the call, the Oilers have agreed to trade Wayne Simmonds and Pontus Aberg to the Devils. The return will be Pavel Zacha, Mirco Mueller, Brian Boyle and a draft pick.

Dreger: The Draft pick will either be a 2nd or a 3rd in this years draft.

Ferraro: Great haul, if Wayne Simmonds doesn't resign in NJ this would be a massive overpayment.

O'Neill: It's alot but look at the quality. Mueller is having agreat season, but it's in a much bigger role than he's going to get in Edmonton. Zacha is a major talent, but hasn't been able to put it all together and has a dreadful -27 rating on a winning team. That's atrocious. How much can he really help the Oilers? Brian Boyle is a key piece to this deal though. He is a premier 4th liner in this league and Edmonton should do everything they can to get him resigned.

McGuire: I'd like to see Zacha next to McDavid. McDavid could be exaclty what Zacha needs to get himself going.

Poulin: I don't think that's a great idea. The Oilers need to see what they're getting in him, not what they're going to get putting him with McDavid. He's a former 6th overall pick, he's got to be able to succeed away from McDavid.

Duthie: Awesome stuff guys, and as the Trade Deadline comes to an end, let's just go back to Craig Button to see what other pieces fell from his Trade Board around the NHL.

Button: Max Pacioretty has been moved from the Kings to the Canes. In that deal the Canes also got Dion Phaneuf. A 1st round pick in 2019 and another in 2020 was sent the other way.
The Penguins acquire Nathan Beaulieu and RJ Umberger from the Sabres for a 1st and a 3rd.
LA was selling in a major was as they sent Alec Martinez to the Bruins and Jake Muzzin to the Flyers.
The Vegas Golden Knights got Travis Hamonic from the Flames for prospect Serron Noel and a 3rd.
The Devils sent Marcus Johansson to the Coyotes for Richard Panik and a 2nd round pick in 2020.

Duthie: Lot's of action here, and some big names being moved. Hopefully just as much action comes this offseason where we'll see you at Free Agency on July 1st.

Okay so I have a Seattle Pelicans franchise that is all the way up to year 2030. I just drafted a goalie in the 7TH round who has FRANCHISE potential...FRANCHISE in the 7th! I'll post a picture shortly. I noticed him in the 5th or 6th round when I saw the medium elite potential and he was projected to go undrafted! I'm also pretty sure I've never drafted player with franchise potential, so to get one in the 7th round (almost the last pick too) is crazy. This is also after drafting two goalies in the 1st round years earlier and they didn't really work out.

That's insane! I love finding late gems that the CPU missed, but WOAH... He's already got great attributes too, being 69ovr when most of the time finds like this are 50-54ovr.

The New York Rangers potent offense is led by the KZB line, specifically Mika ZIbanejad, who sits 1st in the NHL in points, narrowly leading Evgeni Malkin and Brock Boeser among others. Jaromir Jagr is having a resurgence in his age-46 season, and proving to be a season changing add for the team. Duthie: Weclome to the 2018 Edition of NHL TradeCentre on TSN. We are here to follow your New York Rangers as they hunt for their first Stanley Cup since 1994. Coming into the season there wasn't much expected of this group, so how have they done this guys?

Biron: Henrik Lundqvist is the first and foremost reason. He is an all time great, and they way he's playing at age 36 is incredible. The other reason is Jaromir Jagr. The living legend himself has made waves in his return to New York and will easily surpass last seasons point totals.

McGuire: Don't put Mika Zibanejad on the afterburner. He's slowed down from his midseason pace as expected, but he's still become that 1st line center the Rangers needed.

LeBrun: The Rangers have acquired Valtteri Filppula from the Flyers in exchange for prospect Tarmo Reunanen, Peter Holland and a 4th in 2019. Mats Zuccarello is out for a while after re-aggravating his injury, so they needed some reinforcements up front.

Poulin: Filppula's had a good season, but I don't know where he fits when Zuccarello comes back. Their 4th line has hit a rough patch so maybe he slides down there but it will be interesting.

O'Neill: The Rangers really didn't give up all that much for a guy that can make a huge impact. This could be a huge gain come playoffs.

Dreger: The Rangers have shipped David Desharnais to the Blackhawks for Tomas Jurco. More of a depth move, both guys were struggling to get into lineups on respective teams.

Ferraro: I'd say Chicago gets the upgrade right now, but it's hard to see why they did this. It's not a major change in talent and Jurco is half a decade younger with more upside. Unlikely he reaches it but it's tough to the see logic in giving up on Jurco for a return this little.

McKenzie: Big name moved here. Mike Green, regarded as the best rental D on the market, has been moved to the Rangers for a 2019 2nd round pick and defenseman Rob O'Gara. The Rangers are really loading up here.

O'Neill: Don't get me wrong, Greens still a good defenseman, but don't the Rangers already have their offensive RHD in Shattenkirk?

Poulin: Yeah they do Jeff. But in a season where it could be anyones, and the difference between a series win and loss could be an extra PP goal here or there, you always add a guy like Green.

Duthie: Well that's all the time we have for you right now, we'll see you at the NHL Draft and Free Agency!

The New York Rangers called for change when they were swept from the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and this sure is a change. They traded Ryan Spooner, a 2018 1st round pick, a 2018 2nd round pick, a 2020 2nd round pick and Chris Bigras to the Flames for TJ Brodie, Sam Bennett and a 7th in 2018.

Bennett, a former 3rd overall pick, has struggled to get his NHL career going and needed the change of scenery after playing just 6 games all last season.

Brodie, the LHD who can play the right side, joins the Rangers being known as a great two-way defender, who can play top pair well, or be an elite 2nd pair defenseman.

The Rangers were not happy with the way their playoff ended in a sweep by the Devils, so their GM Brant King promised continued change. This is the change. The oft-injured Mats Zuccarello has been moved, the Rangers 3rd captain to be traded in the last 5 seasons, to the Winnipeg Jets along with a 1st round pick in 2020 and another 1st in 2021 and prospect Aleksandar Georgiev in return for Kristian Vesalainen and Steve Mason.

Vesalainen fell to the Jets in their his draft year, but is still an elite talent. The Finnish forward has a massive upside that the Rangers will be determined to see.

Duthie: Welcome all to TSN's annual Free Agent Frenzy for the NHL. The New York Rangers have enough cap space to make a big move, and after a wholly impressive offseason, you have to think they are major players here today.

Button: Well James, they actually don't have a lot of holes to fill, but they will look into every possibility that can make their team better. They've been connected to a few depth pieces and a few of the top dogs. With $7.7M in cap space, everyone is in reach for them. John Carlson is fun to imagine, but the Rangers like where their defense is at right now. Joe Thornton, often connected to the Rangers is in the pool, but I believe they think of him as more of a Deadline option every season. James Van Riemsdyk, who grew up a Rangers fan is an interesting target, and the most likely of the aforementioned trio.

It is belived the Rangers will also seek some depth, providing the cap space remains. Riley Sheahan, Matt Cullen and Radim Vrbata have all been frequent names popping up on most teams radars.

Dreger: The Rangers have announced two depth signings via Twitter. They've signed former Buffalo Sabres prospect Justin Bailey and former Ducks prospect Nic Kerdiles to 1 and 2 year deals respectively. The fact that the Rangers are going with cheap, young depth signings is a telltale sign that they're saving some cap for one of the big guns.

Biron: The Rangers are maing some smart moves. These are young guys that will very likely play in the AHL next season, but New York will get the ability to maybe mold them into 4th line guys in a few years time.

LeBrun: Big trade here. The Rangers have rid themselves of Brendan Smith's contract but it required they move their 2019 1st and 2nd round picks. The Rangers now have no first round picks for the next 3 years, leaving them back where they started less than a year after saying they were done with their old ways.

O'Neill: GM Brant King really needs to have luck on his side here. He hasn't really made this roster any better, he's been swept in the 1st round, and now hes run the teams Draft well dry again. This team does not look like a Cup contender this year, and they don't have a lottery pick to fall back on...tough situation

McKenzie: Breaking news. The Rangers and James Van Riemsdyk have agreed to a 3-year deal worth a total of $19.4M. Van Riesmdyk is not the first star to take a short term deal to come to New York, following in Kevin Shattenkirks footsteps, as homecoming King of July 1st.

Ferraro: The Rangers needed this. They've traded a plethora of wingers and they need to add some manpower or else the upcoming season will be a lost one.

Poulin: The Rangers still have the reigning Hart, Vezina and Ted Lindsay winner in Lundqvist, their defesne is much improved, and obviously somewhere has to be sacrificed. They will be a playoff team.

Season Preview

The New York Rangers have a formidable goaltending duo for the upcoming season. Returning is the reigning top goaltender, top player and MVP of the league, Henrik Lundqvist. Backing him up, the Rangers turn to Steve Mason, a much maligned veteran who has seen his best hockey been played in this very Metropolitan Division.

TJ Brodie and Niklas Hjalmarsson join the Rangers revamped defense corps, as the Rangers strength this season is very clearly their defense. Retaining Brady Skjei, Kevin Shattenkirk, Tony DeAngelo and the revived Marc Staal, the additions of Brodie and Hjalmarsson clearly make the Rangers defense among the best in the league.

Up front, New York seems weaker than seasons past. They bring in young guns in Chytil and Andersson for a full season, start trade acquisition Kasperi Kapanen on their second line, and own reclamation project Sam Bennett. Tomas Jurco earned a roster spot to start the season, and their oldest forward other than Jaromir Jagr is free agent signing JVR at 29. Their entire top line is under 27. The Rangers' fate this season rests on how these forwards produce.

GM Brant King on Roster Decisions:
On starting Brett Howden in AHL: We are not ruling out him joining the team at a later date. He's coming right out of junior, so the kid can use some experience at the pro game to his advantage. There is nothing permanent about this.
On Tomas Jurco getting a spot on 4th line: I can clearly see Tomas isn't the typical fourth line grinder. But the NHL is trending to speed and skill, and this guys got it. We believe in him and that's that.
On Pius Suter and Neal Pionk starting as extras: These guys are young. The roster doesn't stay the same the entire season. Injuries happen. Slumps happen. They will get in, and if they don't deserve to stay in yes we'll obviously evaluate what's best for their development.

Henrik Lundqvist is producing yet another stellar season in his twilight years. The 37-year old is almost posting a replica season of last year's Trophy collecting performance. His backup, Steve Mason, is posting incredible numbers in his own right, proving to be a splendid upgrade over Georgiev, even if some consider him a "throw-in" in the Zuccarello deal.

Brady Skjei is the midseason consensus for Norris Trophy, unlikely he keeps it up but the Rangers are enjoying the offense from the back end. All other defenseman are having great seasons, as the acquisitions of TJ Brodie and Niklas Hjalmarsson prove to be worth it.

The Rangers have one line going the way they'd like. Filip Chytil, James Van Riemsdyk and Kasperi Kapanen have been great, but the other forwards are lagging behind. Especially the likes of Pavel Buchnevich, trying to earn a long-term deal and Mika Zibanejad, who has regressed massively. One other positive note, is although his production has fallen, Jaromir Jagr is still contributing nicely.

Both of the Rangers goalies slowed down from their midseason pace. Henrik Lundqvist, now sitting at 37-years old, still posted great numbers in the second half, just not at the blistering pace they were at the midpoint.

The Rangers defense was led by a breakout season from Brady Skjei. The defender finished 4th in points by a defenseman, but led the pack in +/- (of the 3 above him). TJ Brodie had an iffy season in his first on broadway, and one could wonder if that will be his only considering the glut of defenders expecting to make their way to the NHL for the Rangers. With the improved production of Tony DeAngelo, Kevin Shattenkirk could also see his name on the chopping block after a down year for the offensive defenseman. Niklas Hjalmarsson is in talks for a contract extension with the club after posting a +40 rating, good for 2nd in the league. Marc Staal, John Gilmour and Neal Pionk were all good to great.

The Rangers forwards picked it up over the second half. Resurgent second halves by Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich and Kevin Hayes helped propel the Rangers to a 2nd league offense. Filip Chytil, JVR and Kasperi Kapanen were incredible all season long, and the 4th line of Andersson, Fast and Jurco was the best in the league. Sam Bennett showed a real defensive development in his game, while Jaromir Jagr continued to defy age and logic. Chris Kreider was great as per usual.

Series Recap
The Rangers made history. They become one of the few teams to ever complete the down 0-3 comeback. Through Henrik Lundqvist's struggles, the offense came out of the black hole that is was from Games 1-3. The 4th line was integral in the comeback after Nieves went in for Fast. The signing of James Van Riemsyk continues to pay dividends as he was their best player in the series. Jaromir Jagr is excelling for the Rangers, leading the team with 4 goals.

Duthie: Rangers fans around the world, welcome to the 2019 Free Agent Frenzy here on TSN. The Rangers have some serious roster turnover after winning the Stanley Cup, moving out TJ Brodie, Kevin Hayes and Tomas Jurco. They have yet to add anyone to their roster, but it is expected that alot of the players filling holes will be prospects.

Button: The Rangers ares till looking for one or two depth pieces though James. They feel the can afford to add a veteran forward and maybe even a veteran defenseman. Some players they're rumored to be interested in are Justin Williams, Rick Nash, Tyler Myers and Anton Stralman.

McKenzie: And just as you say that, we've got reports of Rick Nash heading back to New York on a 1-year deal. The salary is somewhere in the ballpark of $3.5-4.0M.

Ferraro: I really don't know where Nash fits in back with the Rangers. They have a plethora of forwards and this is a declining veteran.

Poulin: He fits in on the 4th line. But I don't see why you pay Nash almost $4M to play 4th line. Makes no sense.

I'm doing a Canucks one from...I think the roster in February (before the trade deadline, but after the Duchene/Turris trade happened) and I hope I just picked up a gem in round 2 (37th pick) of the draft 4 years in; top 4 d-man Nick Pollock at 80 overall. We just came off winning the Cup so we'll see how he plays alongside Stecher. I also have an elite LW grinder that will likely make the jump from minors to 3rd or 4th liner so the next few years could be interesting :nod:

I still have Loui Eriksson by the way....he's actually been a beast for me on the 1st or 2nd lines, usually I try to offload him early on :laugh:

To achieve balance, the Detroit Red Wings will be moved to the Central Division, restoring rivalries with teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche to division rival status.

The salary cap for 2017-18 will be $75M, with the floor being $55.4M.

7/20/17 Rumors say that the Panthers were in extreme financial ruin at the hands of the prior owners in the wake of the team’s purchase by a New Hampshire-based businessman. He had no comment on his plans for the team, but it fuels speculation that the Panthers could be on the move. Given the new owner is based in New Hampshire, the team could be moved to Hartford in nearby Connecticut.

7/24/17 The day longtime Panthers fans have feared for years has arrived. Today the Panthers announced they will be moving to Hartford, Connecticut starting with the 2018-19 season, and become the second iteration of the Hartford Whalers. They will play in the Spectrum Center, a new arena already under construction in downtown Hartford.

We finish fourth last in the league, with only Carolina (69 points), New Jersey (65 points, 27 ROW), and Buffalo (65 points, 24 ROW) finishing worse. The Blackhawks won the Presidents’ Trophy this year, with the Capitals having the East’s best record, and 2nd best record in the league. In their first year back in the Central, Detroit finished 2nd in the division and 3rd in the league. Toronto won the Atlantic and 4th best in the league, and San Jose won the Pacific and 5th best in the league, rounding out the top 5 teams in the league.

11/29/18: With their record now 5-16-2 with the final November game played last night, the Whalers are in deep misery, and a source close to the matter says that GM ncoramwx is in extreme misery in his job due to yet another extremely meddlesome owner. The source goes on to say that ncoramwx is only still in his position as not to create a breach of contract violation, and that he is unlikely to sign an extension after the 2019-20 season. Furthermore, the unnamed source also stated that ncoramwx has had several ambitious and forward-thinking deals vetoed by ownership, and his blueprint for the Whalers has been shut down by ownership. In discussions with executives from other teams, it was clear that ncoramwx is a brilliant, savvy hockey mind who is not being permitted to properly rebuild the Whalers and is otherwise a perfectly capable GM that will be sought after no later than his inevitable 2020 free agency, if not perhaps earlier in the event of his firing by an unhappy ownership group.

4/11/18 - End of Season/Start of Playoffs Report:
Our top scorer was, once again, Tyler Toffoli, who had 47 goals and 33 assists, good for 80 points. He was actually in third place in the Rocket Richard Trophy race, losing out to Tyler Seguin (51 goals) and Alex Ovechkin (58 goals). His 80 points were 15th overall in the league; the Art Ross Trophy went to Jamie Benn (35-71--106), who also led the league in assists. Toffoli’s performance was one of the lone bright spots on the team, however, as he was 33 points ahead of second-place team scorer Henrik Sedin (14-33--47).

This year, two of the bottom five teams were in last year’s top five teams (San Jose and Detroit were 31st and 30th, respectively, after being 3rd and 5th, respectively, last season). Rounding out the bottom five is Carolina (28th) and New Jersey (27th). The Dallas Stars, on the flip side, won the Presidents’ Trophy this year, with the Winnipeg Jets claiming 2nd place in both the NHL and their division. The Penguins won the East and got 3rd place in the NHL, the Lightning were 4th and won the Atlantic, and the Canadiens round out the top 5 with a 2nd place Atlantic finish. The Pacific Division winner, Anaheim, ended up in 9th place in the NHL.

Meanwhile, the defending Stanley Cup champion and last year’s East regular season winner, Washington, missed the playoffs altogether this year, as did last year’s Presidents’ Trophy winners in the Chicago Blackhawks. As already noted, the Red Wings missed the playoffs (and badly) after being last year’s West playoff champion, and the Sharks also had a sudden collapse from one of the league’s best teams to one of the worst. The other teams that missed the playoffs this year that were in last year are Toronto, Boston, Minnesota, and Calgary. The new teams in this year’s playoffs are the NY Islanders, Philadelphia, the NY Rangers, Winnipeg, Colorado, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Anaheim.

2019 first round matchups are DAL-NSH, WPG-COL, ANA-STL, EDM-LA in the West, and PIT-PHI, NYI-CBJ, TB-NYR, and MTL-OTT in the East.

Meanwhile, AHL Springfield is facing off in the first round against… Lehigh Valley. Again.

5/30/19: The Los Angeles Kings are the 2019 Stanley Cup Champions. Conn Smythe Trophy goes to Drew Doughty, who actually led all skaters league-wide in playoff scoring with 27 points, powered by his league-leading 25 assists. He also scored 2 goals. The goal leader in the playoffs was Tyler Seguin, with 12 goals (Seguin also notched 9 assists).

6/1/19: The Texas Stars are the 2019 Calder Cup Champions, having overcome a 2-0 series deficit to the Providence Bruins en route to a 7 game victory. The Butterfield Trophy (AHL Playoff MVP) goes to Michael Mersch, left wing of the Stars.
