Bylsma is a name I haven't heard in a while, but he could be a good candidate. Wore out his welcome in Pittsburgh. Bob Hartley is meh? Marc Crawford is an absolute no-go in my opinion.

Bylsma is a terrible coach...period. I don't care what he did in that one season in Pitt. Look at the job he did during the Olympic. My god he was terrible when the games matter, then threw Brown and Quick under the bus afterwards.

It's interesting to see the types of coaches who at one point were considered inept, and then suddenly they're considered among the best.

Take Bruce Cassidy as an example. He was hated by Caps fans and only lasted 1.5 seasons in Washington and didn't hold another head coaching position in the NHL for 12 years. The last time he coached was prior to the lockout, in 2003-04, and he coached Kingston in the OHL and was the head coach of the Providence Bruins for five seasons before he was named interim head coach of the Boston Bruins with 27 games remaining in the 2016-17 schedule. Last season he coached the Bruins to a 50-19-12 season, and he's four wins away from another 50-win season.

Before taking over the Bruins, nobody considered Bruce Cassidy as a top coaching candidate. Mike Sullivan also has a similar story. Coincidentally, he started off coaching the Bruins and only lasted two seasons there, and he was out of the NHL for a decade until the Penguins hired him midway into the 2015-16, and he coached them to a Stanley Cup that season and became the first coach in the post-cap era to coach a team to back-to-back Stanley Cup wins. And prior to that, the only head coaching gig he held was in Wilkes-Barre, and before that he served as an assistant coach with three different teams (Tampa Bay, New York R., and Vancouver).

The point I'm trying to make is that nobody even thought of these names as prime coaching candidates for teams that are trying to win now, yet they had immediate success, and also injected some youth in their respective lineups that gave their teams a jolt of much needed energy.

With a career winning percentage of .594 (which is among the top 10 among current coaches), and having the experience of working with plenty of young players with his experiences as an assistant in Detroit and with his stints in San Jose and Edmonton, I can understand the logic as to why the Kings are interested in him. I view him to be in the same level as a Gerard Gallant, who also had two unsuccessful stints in Columbus and Florida before finding success in Vegas.

I prefer a young coach with a winning pedigree like Sheldon Keefe, but it sounds like Toronto is going to lock him up, and should Babcock lose his gig, he may be next in line to be his successor. I sing Jon Cooper's praises all the time, and that is the type of coach I would like to see behind the bench, but how many Jon Cooper's are out there, or who is the next Jon Cooper?

Cooper was virtually an unknown, having only coached two seasons in the AHL (winning the Calder Cup in his second season with Norfolk), and he coached a partial season in Syracuse before he was promoted by the Lightning in 2013 with only 17 games remaining. He's about to hit 60 wins this season and has two prior 50+ winning seasons, with a run to the Stanley Cup Finals and two Eastern Conference Final appearances (both losses coming at the hands of the eventual Cup winners, Pittsburgh and Washington).

Maybe it is the fear of missing out and seeing a rival hire Todd McLellan, but consider the other names being bandied about, like Dallas Eakins, Dave Tippett, presumably Bruce Boudreau should Minnesota let him go. Are they better options? Or are there any other unknown candidates we should be aware of?

And as a reminder. The Kings hired a successful minor league coach back in 1992, and he led them to the Cup Finals in 1993, yet he is considered to be one of the worst coaches the Kings and Lightning have had the misfortune of having behind the bench because of his archaic views of the game. The Kings need a bench boss who knows how to coach in this era.
On top of that guys like Eakins, DeBoer and Dineen were seen as great up and coming coaches. DeBoer has at least made the Finals a few times but neither of the others has done much .

The last two coaching selections have been made with an eye toward having the approval of the players. F that!

The Wild look like they’re going to miss the playoffs and HC BB might become available. I hope Blake could get to him before the Ducks.

Why? Bruce is a good regular season coach, but when it comes to the playoffs he sucks.

They did say the same thing about Barry Trotz, up until last season. I doubt they go after Boudreau, but I like how blunt and up front he is with assessing his teams. He was behind the bench in Manchester when they had Dustin Brown playing there during the lockout, and he coached them to a 51-21-8 record. So he has experience with developing young players.

Then you have the highest paid coach in the league who’s coached one Cup winning team and that was over a decade ago, and Toronto fans are starting to question if he was all hype.

Other than Doughty if I'm Blake and any King player gives me input of any kind on anything I'm not listening. Go do your job.

Doughty better check his tampon's dry before giving any advice on who should coach the Kings

Blake better laser remove his Sharks tattoo on his left butt cheek before starting his search for the next Kings coach

Doughty is a great player but he strikes me as having the intelligence level of Bill & Ted. He is tied to the Kings whether they hire Coach Q or whether they hire Barry Melrose.

Coach Q has too many medical issues, IMHO. Didn't the guy miss time due to a heart attack or something? Not a good long-term investment.....

I don't care if the next coach "won it all." There's no way we have a team assembled in the next couple of years that is going to have a chance to win it all. Get a coach that can develop young players, reinforce good habits, and implement a system that is actually a system and can be used to win in today's NHL. Then, if we need a different coach to get the team over the hump, we'll worry about that then.

That is exactly how they need to be thinking

My top 3 that I think would actually come to the Kings

Dallas Eakins
Rikard Gronberg
John Madden

I thought about this last night; a funny Kings April Fools day joke would’ve been announcing the hiring of Barry Melrose as next years coach. Have a press release, player interviews and such and just punk the entire media. Then do the jersey photo op with him holding up the Kings jersey with the Sac Kings logo on it.

I thought Melrose and Palffy were criminally overlooked on 90s night.

Some coaching news around the NHL:

4. With all of the talk about the next manager or president, there’s been little about the coach. The Oilers only committed to Ken Hitchcock for the rest of this season, and they’re going to want a fresh start behind the bench, too. They’ve gone with experience; they’ve given first-timers a chance. It is as important a hire.
Word on Joel Quenneville is he wants to go somewhere where you can see a path to victory. Dave Tippett also can afford to be choosy; Edmonton makes sense for him, if they are interested. But, it’s hard to drive down this road until we see who is given the keys to the car.

5. Alain Vigneault’s name is popping up, too. If Florida makes a change, that could be a fit.

8. My sense is Sabres GM Jason Botterill does not want a coaching change. That would make five bench bosses since Lindy Ruff was fired in February 2013. It’s too much, and the problem is bigger than Phil Housley. But the pressure is mounting and, as the season grinds to an end, results are getting worse. (Even if something does happen, it seems certain that roster surgery is coming with it.)
It may come down to what the Sabres think their options are. If they cannot attract one of the free-agent heavyweights, I’m curious to see how much of a look is given to their AHL coach, Rochester’s Chris Taylor. The Americans are very good, with key prospects showing improvement. Botterill was part of three Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh won by coaches promoted from the AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre.

You have to wonder how attractive the Kings are for coaching candidates. Who would want to coach here?

There's very little chance LA will be competitive any time soon. If I'm a coach, that's not a situation I'm eager to go to.

Maybe if Kings get lucky and land the 1st overall pick the perception of them by potential coaches will change.

Someone that's interested in being part of building a team. Someone that wants to live in Manhattan Beach.

This is where LA's weather, lifestyle, etc. helps us get a leg up.

As the old saying goes, “there’s only 31 head coaching jobs in this league.” An established coach especially one that’s being paid by his former team can be very selective. Younger coaches don’t have that luxury. If a younger coach can make his mark turning around a team, then they become a viable prospect the next time they’re on the market..
