Why would Suzuki be captain? Because he's our best player by default? This team has zero leadership and that includes Suzuki.

Kent Hughes said we will have a captain to start next season so who do you want as your team next captain? Wether on the team currently or acquired.

If they force the issue, then I hope it's Byron or Edmundson... because its clear whoever gets named will only be a placeholder for Suzuki, who should be getting it within the next 2-3 seasons.

I get not giving it to him now, and hope he doesn't get it in the fall (new deal kicking in & taking on the C would be a boatload of pressure to dump on him right when we need him to confidently take another step fwd)...

Byron is also a very good choice that I forgot about. I agree Suzuki is too young for the C.

It seems modernizing the franchise is something HuGo wants to do and a lot of teams nowadays choose a young captain who is going to be a part of their core long term so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Suzuki. I believe I’ve read of several veteran players in our locker room having good things to say about him.

I know this sounds petty, but I also don't want Gally because I know his political views are out there. Make him captain and then that stuff could creep into the mainstream and becomes a distraction. Suzuki is the logical choice for almost every reason.

I think Edmundson would be a good transition captain, would allow Suzuki to focus on his game. After seeing his media interactions at the All-star game not sure Suz is really eager to be named Captain and do more media pressers vs being a "silent / lead by example on the ice" player.

Everybody wants to give the C to Suzuki to "solve" this but he looks like a shy kid, not the C of the Habs. Maybe he doesn't want to deal with that (but can't say it publicly).

An extra 2 years would also allow future Habs to join the roster and have more of that future team in place so they can identify their leaders. I think HuGo is paying close attention to that when adding to the team (Ghule, Barron and Harris are all former team captains for example).

My vote is for Suzuki and it’s not particularly close. I don’t care that he’s quiet, or shy, or whatever. If he’s shy, tell the media to f*** off. For some reason, I can’t recall the last time Gaston iced the Bolts on a shootout winner. This is hockey, not politics.

If he doesn’t want it, sure, different story.

I dont like the idea of putting that extra pressure on Suzuki at his age. He’ll go cold for a couple weeks and everyone will turn on him, as were known to do. Give it to a veteran for a couple seasons until Suzuki is ready for the extra responsibilities. As much as I like Gallagher I’m not sure he has the right temperament for the job, Edmundson gets my vote.

So training camp is probably less than a month away. I expect a captain to be named before then, likely at the golf tournament.

Has anyone changed their mind on who they think will / should be named captain? I said Suzuki back when this post was first made, and he's still my pick.
