Given the options, contracts, and understanding the timeline/rebuild... I made a very logical choice that would've worked out rather perfectly. But surely, everyone loves Gio's top 6 ice time, and potentially another season of his captaincy.
There's a difference between choosing the captain for a short period rebuild/tank. And choosing the captain of a soon to be contender, loaded with youth and talent.
I think the most amusing part about this argument is that I wouldn't even consider Zemgus to be charismatic.![]()
Has nothing to do with nothing. Nobody is arguing for Gionta.

Ok, I went with Jack. ROR is the clear leader on this team right now but let's say this coming off season they decide to change it up and put the C on Ryan. Yet, in a year or two, Eichel is the clear leader on the team, putting the squad on his back and winning games by himself. That's an assumption but is it a stretch? I don't think so. Then they'd have to strip the C off of peak ROR to give it to Jack. That may set him back. I get it, that's a lot of presumption but I think it would be the safe move.
I get the purpose of a captaincy and I disagree with you.
I don't think O'Reilly is a natural leader. Hard worker, ambitious, and well respected sure. But I don't think he's a leader. He may inspire others to work harder without saying anything, but that does not make you a leader.
If I had to list in order who should be captain today, it would be:
1. Gionta
2. Girgensons
3. ROR
4. Eichel
In two years:
1. Girgensons
2. Eichel
3. ROR
4. Risto (maybe)
Notice I did not include Legwand or Reinhart. Reinhart is not a leader, Legwand gives me a weird vibe.
Girgs is a natural leader. Watch the team during breaks. They always gather around him. He's going to be a better leader than Gionta who is a very confident and mature guy himself.
ROR is a classic A guy. Give him a letter, let some young guys shadow him, learn about working hard in the NHL. But when push comes to shove, Girgs is going to be the leader.
To add to your post, just because it's "obvious" to you, does not make it objective reality.
Eichel growing into a leader himself doesn't mean O'Reilly all of a sudden stops becoming a leader. O'Reilly is a good choice for captain now and he'll be a good choice for captain in 5 years, regardless of what Eichel does.
I should've typed more quickly. I would also like to see the ACTUAL CAPTAIN get to wear the 'C', regardless of who that is. It does seem to be O'Reilly at this moment.I think we'll end up seeing ROR with the C and Eichel with an A. Unless we go the typical "Star PLayer gets the C regardless of anything else." I would like to see our team go against the grain on this one.
A lot there, but Reinhart is not a leader made me laugh. I mean any reason why? Outside of the fact that he captained his jr team forever, Canada's wjc and has shown nothing but discipline and resolve to get better.
Depends on when the next C is named, right? If at that point Jack is your #1, 90 point, franchise center then it's his team, period. Otherwise it's the guy you brought in to hold that chair. I don't know if Gionta makes it that far (end of contract) if he can't be a top-9 guy.
Yeah, watch him in interviews. He's a passenger, not a driver. Clear as day.
If you're looking for tangible reasons, watch the video from the draft where Murray sits him down and tells him "look, we all know you're good, but can you be a vocal leader?" Murray sees it.

Nothing against him, most people aren't leaders. But in a thread about a potential captain, I don't see anything about Reinhart that would make me consider it outside of his playmaking skills. My guess is he captained the Junior team because he was the best player on the team.
And discipline and resolve makes you a good person, but it takes more than that to be a leader.
still a bizarre way to determine leadership
poor paraphrasing
What's up with you and interviews? Watching player interviews are probably the last thing I'd consider when looking at a team captain. Most players hate giving interviews, including current captains around the league. Such a weird component to put so much stock into, I don't get it.
Not only that, but how the hell do you determine someone's a passenger from an interview??
It's very easy. You can tell a lot about a person just by watching them.
It's a learned skill. Start watching people and trust your intuition. The more you do it, the better you get. You'll find that you get pretty accurate. We all have the ability, we just don't use it.
As odd as you think I sound, I find you guys odd for not thinking you can do it.
Man, you just can't let it go.
OK:
1. It's not bizarre, it's simply not what you'd expect. If you were at an event and started watching somebody talk for 5-10 minutes, would you have an opinion on that person? Now let's say you went to several events where you watched that person answer questions for 5-10 minutes. Would you feel like you have a pretty good feel for what kind of person he is? Well, that's exactly what I'm doing by watching them in interviews. Some people are better at it than others. I don't think I'm doing anything crazy. I like to read people pretty deep.
2. Well then let's give us a great paraphrase then.
wut? Who said I can't do it? It's just not something I don't care about in a team captain. The guys who show up for player interviews are not the same guys that are on the ice. Like I said, most players don't like giving them in the first place. The questions are all the same, the answers are all the same and 99% of them are pointless. Why in the world would I care about their body language, attitude or personality while they're doing them? It makes literally zero difference as to whether or not they're a leader on the ice and in the locker room.
So basically dismiss everything coaches, scouts and teammates have ever said about Reinhart...because you think his interviews aren't leadery enough.
Well I'm sold.
I wouldn't watch a business leader in a television commercial to determine if he was qualified to be my CFO
Being good in an interview has squat to do with being a leader of a hockey team.
