This one needs to go along with it.

At his best, Slavin is the most visually impressive defensive player I can recall in the 15 years or so of closely watching the NHL. Not to say he's necessarily the best overall, but he really stands out in terms of individual plays. That's hard to do as a defenseman. It's easier for a Datsyuk or Bergeron to do noticeable things on the backcheck. Slavin is fronting the puck constantly.

Excellence in action...his calmness under pressure is amazing, too.

Slavin has taken exactly one (1) penalty this year in 45 games played, averaging over 23 minutes per game, which comes to a total of 1,052 minutes and 17 seconds of ice time, while playing against the best every opposing team has to offer. The man is an absolute stallion, and we're so lucky to have him on our team.

Oh, and that penalty he took? A two minute Delay of Game for accidentally putting the puck over the glass in a game against Florida.

He radiates purity which even the refs can't soil.

a 26 year old defenseman who does things like that so routinely that we don't even call them out on the GDT anymore because they're so commonplace. We are so lucky to have him, and he should absolutely be anchoring our defense for the next 8-10 years.

As long as he's running 1st line defensive numbers every game, we're going to be in a position to win. Having Pesce (and maybe Hakanpaa?) anchoring the other line(s), phew... that is a hell of a core for our contention window.

You can go back further. The last non-delay of game penalty he took was at the beginning of February 2020 (Link). That encompasses 69 (nice, of course) regular season + playoff games.

Listening to the podcast with Dundon, he does drop one nugget that he's hopeful that the arena will be more than 50% full for the start of next season. He obviously isn't a part of the overall conversation with NC policies, but he does see momentum toward 100% capacity sooner rather than later.

I mean but seriously, when you have Slavin, Pesce, and (hopefully) Hakpanaa anchoring our 3 defensive lines with the defensive analytics they have, you can almost plug and play their pairs and still win.

I'm not going to go so far as to say that it wouldn't hurt to lose Dougie in FA if it happens, but I also don't think that we'd be as far up shit creek as you'd think. I'd still very much like to keep him, because our defense right now is pretty much a cheat code, which is evident on our ridiculous goals against this year.

Agree on all counts. That defense allows for some pretty creative offense. As this team matures together they get even better . Think about that ...

Oh, I don't doubt it. Obviously, you can't force the vaccine on everybody, but it seems like a good majority of people are getting one of the ones out there. And with the new CDC ruling, it's another step towards getting back to normal.

I don't use a mask often (since my job has almost no contact with people, except for walks outside), but even still, I'm looking forward to going to the store or getting a haircut sans mask. And if the NHL follows what some teams in other sports are doing, and having a "Full Vaccination Section" in the arenas, I'd be up for going back to a game as well.

Getting my 2nd poke of Moderna on Friday and I was very glad to hear about the CDC's announcement this afternoon. If it takes having a fully vaccinated section that allows full capacity to those with a filled out vaccine card, I'm all for it.

Dundon also had some other insights into the region. Basically, he came clean and said he wasn't sold on Raleigh being a permanent home for the Canes until he saw the fan turnout for the 2019 playoff run. Now he knows that this place can rally around a winner, so its completely on him and his staff to make that happen. And if the arena isn't full, its their fault, not the fans. Also said the current priority is cultivating a core of Carolina Hurricanes fans in the region, and not necessarily hockey fans. That's why we're so willing to try something outside the box when it comes to fan relation, because its about the Canes and not the sanctity of hockey.

The problem wont be NC per se, it'll be the NHL relaxing rules that say all teams have to have the same percentage of people in the seats. NC/the Triangle will probably be good to go come October 2021, I can't say with similar certainty the same will be true for Canada.
I think the league is going to take the money where it comes. If Canada is still in heavy lockdown policies and pressures, they'll still restrict fans there, but will allow them in at the local governance levels stateside.

By the time we get to October, the shots will have been available to all adults 16 and over in the US for 7 months. We can't keep everything locked down forever because certain people aren't willing to do what it takes to protect themselves.

Well, at least that confirmed the gut feeling I had when he first arrived here. Always felt like waiting for the other shoe to drop with regards to his purchase and possible relocation. Glad to see he changed his mind. I would have thought it'd be obvious that a 10-year drought would cause any fanbase to struggle to give a damn (let alone a nontraditional market like this one), but I guess it wasn't?

Also, "preserving the sanctity of hockey" totally has to be our playoff avatar theme.

EDIT: Or better yet, start with "Preserving the sanctity of hockey", then have it change to "Perversing the sanctity of hockey."

IMO this area has been a bit spoiled when it comes to sports. Me included. NC and most of us natives have been surrounded by ACC basketball. With the big 4 teams someone was always in the hunt. For a fan base that's used to winning, 10 years is a very bad thing. It seems like he gets that. Karmanos never did.
