I mean this isn't really true at all, plenty of mechanical watches are nowhere near the cost of a Rolex and have *zero* status, and yet plenty of people buy them because they appreciate the craftsmanship aspect of it. Also, I would consider it to be extremely risky as an investment vehicle but plenty of people have bought them for that reason too.Mechanical watches are less accurate than quartz and significantly more difficult (read: expensive) to maintain. *All* premium watches are about buying status.
To be below the poverty level you need to have no "claimable income", work inder the table, have a 60,000 plus car and live in substadized housing. The median income for my home county where I was born, is 22,760. (Buchanan co Va) Household is like 37K. That poverty level is a joke. People back home are poor as dirt. But I guess too be "poverty" you need to be on services or have a shithouse instead of an actual bathroom.
I'll just take a watch with a calculator or some rando Simpsons watch out of a Burger King Kids Meal like back in the good ole days.
