News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

Surely there’s no one still advocating we run the same defense next year with the only change being Nikishin in for Orlov? Bare minimum is we find a proper upgrade on Burns to play with Slavin. Maybe move out Chatfield snd replace him with a bigger guy who can partner Ghost while moving Walker up with Nikishin?

Not even counting turnovers from blocked shots in the o-zone
He's clearly been pretty loose with puck...I look for a faux pas every game. However, he hasn't always been that way for us.

His first year with the Canes was one of the best statistical defensive efforts for Carolina in quite some time (one of these days I'll publish the research I did on the team) and he was a difference maker!

Slavin or a forward will get the puck in the defensive zone and rim it along the boards behind the net to Burns side. And before he can cleanly collect the puck and start skating it out or even just chip it out, a guy will come charging over to force a 50/50 board battle/possible turnover. It's painful to watch, if not unexpected for one of the oldest guys in the League

Nor counting the amount of times he’s pinched at a foolish time, leading to a 2-on-1 or breakaway. The guy shouldn’t be playing the minutes he is this year.
I think Rod should at least try Walker there, but woof Ghost Burns would probably be a nightmare. Could it be worse than TDA Orlov?

For all the hand wringing about defense and goaltending and pretty much everything this season:

Through 44 games last year: 25-14-5 with 134 goals against.

Through 44 games this season: 26-15-3 with 123 goals against.
From what I recall goaltending and the Orlov TDA pair were pretty bad the first 20 or 30 games and the team turned things on a little after.

I will beat this horse until there isn't enough left to make glue, but i want them to at least try slavin/orlov and put chatfield/burns "back" together since ghost/burns sounds like a disaster.

Orlov and chatfield have shown in the past they can play their off sides. Slavin/orlov could be awesome. Maybe. Make like the cars and shake it up!

The Canes alumni game tonight was super fun. Ice Pack came from behind to beat them 7-6.

It was just like old times: Captain Staal with a lazy penalty to lose a game they should have won.
How did the crowd work? Would they cheer for both teams, or were there people clearly cheering for one/the other?

The crowd cheered for everyone, pretty much. The State band was there, up where the siren is, and they played the whole game. It was a blast, honestly. Made me hope for top level college hockey here.

Early season Burns was making me think we ought to re-sign him. Lately, Burns has had a lot of great moments but also a lot of oopses. He's just lost a little bit of speed and agility, which can be everything in the NHL.

Next year with Nikishin coming over I'd envision pairing Slavin with Walker, Chatfield with Nikishin, and Ghostisbehere with a free agent signing. Perhaps we have something in Chicago next year with Morrow or Legault, but I wouldn't count on it. If we do end up with a second rookie, you run out of good pairing options when you have only Slavin, Walker, and Chatfield as NHL mainstays who can play good defense.

I think we're most likely to sign someone in the offseason, but I could also see Rod wanting to sign Burns for another year and play him 3rd pair.

Reading Ken Dryden's (audio)book Scotty, about NHL legendary coach and infamous curmudgeon Scotty Bowman. It's a semi-autobiography of the man interspersed with his descriptions and explanations of his top 8 teams in NHL history.

I have a lot of thoughts, but I thought this was funny: one of the teams is the 55-56 Canadiens. Their coach, Hector "Toe" Blake would spend his Fridays at his desk, surrounded by stacks of paper. Back then the NHL didn't track stats, so Blake had it done in house. He would follow data like "who was on ice for a goal against," and if he kept noticing a guy was on ice for a lot of goals against in his stacks of paper, but he thought they were fine, he would assume he'd missed something in the eye test and bench them.

Moral of the story: stat nerds have always been here.

Also I haven't gotten there yet, but one of his teams is the 14-15 Blackhawks, which means Teuvo Teravainen is in this book, and I think that's charming

We should have Burns stay in a lower role if we can get an upgrade.

I don’t see that much of a difference in him. This is almost completely the result of losing Pesce and Skjei while giving those minutes to the current top two pairs who just aren’t as good defensively.

As someone else said earlier, Nikishin isn’t likely to fix this by himself.

Only because Russian Pronger is a ld.

With Slavin, Orlov, Ghost down the left were still pretty set. Walker is a good no 4 and Chatfield a no 5. Burns is probably more of a 4/5 at 40 but we know Rod won't put Orlov or Russian Pronger on the right side.
