Canes sales team super aggressive this year. Many calls. Finally talked again to the kid today. Had to decline coming back into the STM fold.

Seems like he's heard a lot of the same when I listed the lackluster offseason as a primary reason. And also the ridiculous restrictions on 11 game plans compared to the way it used to be.

Wonder how its going for them overall with the season tix?

Given the economic situation, removing options for 11 games seems to me that it is leaving money on the table.

I'd rather have people that want 11 game packages than try to strong arm them to buy more.

Some things that stand out (in that Bruins/Hurricanes game):

- Those jerseys are just 😍. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
- The pace holds up surprisingly well. Maybe that's just a function of the players on those respective clubs. Kapanen and Sanderson would look fast in any era.
- The amount of hooking in that era is comical to watch with 2024 eyes.
- 2 D on the PPs for both teams!

Sanderson is the one guy from those last few years of Whalers you guys would’ve really loved that I always assumed is fairly unknown amongst Canes fans. He’s one of the best left wingers we’ve ever had. 46 goals as a 20/21 year old, set the record for pp goals (21?), was the flat out fastest player we’ve ever had. I’m obviously factoring Necas in there. He played a much simpler game than that. Very few dangles. He drove the left wing as fast as he could and could blow pucks past the best goalies in the game in motion. Put him with a creative passer (Cassels) who gave him the puck in motion with space and there was no stopping him. Never saw a shot he didn’t like and always shot low.

There was an early Canes article in SI where they got some candid comments from Burke and Sanderson about being displeased leaving Hartford to play in the less than ideal Greensboro situation. Maybe a month in. JR didn’t like the attitude about it in the room and traded them both immediately which is where we got Gelinas who was a huge downgrade but scored one of the biggest goals in team history.

Burke was imo the best goalie we’ve ever had. Neither player ever truly recovered though they both had some good years. Sandy needed a Cassels.

Not sure if I told this story before, but I was in a hockey camp/clinic run by the Whalers and Sanderson was teaching passing and Cassels the shooting and my 10 year old self was pissed off I was learning from the wrong ones.

Omg that’s amazing. The two of them must’ve been having so much fun with that. That’s a great experience, and I’m pretty jealous. The closest I ever got to behind the scenes around them was a few preseason practices they had open to the public.

That’s all I remember from it unfortunately. That and the jersey they gave us to wear is the same one Kenny Wu is wearing at the start of the second Mighty Ducks movie.

Are we saying faster than Sami Kapanen here?
Oh yeah, not really all that close.

Sanderson made the skills competition one year. I’ve told this story before so sorry to those who have read it. They used to do the sprint around the rink as a head to head with two guys on the rink at the same time, starting at the red line across from each other. Sanderson drew…..Pavel effing Bure. Who obviously had won the competition before.

Sanderson beat him.

Clean runs for them both, neither got caught on anything. Sanderson also was in the slap shot contest and broke 100 (101.whatever I think) and it held up as the winner until the last guy who was Al Macinnis - a 105-106ish winner every year. That’s what he did, sprint like he was being chased by a knife wielding maniac and shoot through goalies. Roy, Hasek, Broduer….all of them. Kapanen had better hands, playmaking and lateral skating. Better all around player but Sanderson was the goal scorer.

When I had STM back in the day I had the 12 game or third of a season whatever. That was WAY ago. Then we sucked and I jettisoned that into the sun because I could get tickets for like 20.00. IDK how people have the time to go to 36 home games even living in raleigh. I mean I guess, but, must me nice to have that kind of money and time off.

They STILL call me to this day even though I've not been a holder since like 2010. I don't even live in NC any more (wish I did but my commute to work would be like an hour and 15 min, F that). We almost moved into Moyock or Tarboro like 4 or 5 years ago. But the commute. Now with interest rates through the roof because we we elect idiots that cause financial crisis from shutting the country down, I can't afford a new mortgage. No way I am paying 7 or 8 percent when I now pay like 2.

Still, I want out of VA. I hate this state even though I grew up here. I can't wait to get the f*** out of here.

I wonder how many people actually go to the entire home schedule. It can’t be that many, it’s pretty inconvenient and pretty expensive to spend 2-3 nights a week at hockey games. Doing that sounds like way more fun than it actually is, you’re just grinding the schedule by the end.

Doing it for the '06 playoffs is both a very fond memory and was also a ridiculous stretch of two months from a personal schedule perspective that we all remember as well. It's not quite 2-3 nights per week (~6ish home games/mo), but that's still a legitimate life commitment.

Born in Ohio loved to northern Durham before moving to Va. Right before high school. If I wasn't married to an only child no way in hell would I love in Va. What a dump.

It could be great. I grew up in SW Va. The very north end of VB and false cape is ok. SW va in the rural regions is just fine.

But richmond, hampton roads, and NoVA / DC has literally ZERO redeeming qualities. 151 is totally political now. The breweries are all political and a bunch of bearded flannel clad zoomers and millenials with their charlottesville nonsense ruin the entire thing.
Crystal city is overrun with Indian people now and sorry not sorry, they are NASTY. SO MUCH trash. Everywhere. Like they can't use a trash can. They just pile it. And then they flood SNP in the fall so bad now, and leave trash ALL OVER the park. Food, cans, diapers, napkins, towels, its f***ing disgusting and you cant even go to SNP / Skyline anymore in october. Every pulloff has diapers and trash. We used to go to arlington every year, and stay in Crystal city but it's just gross now.

The wife and I were up there (SNP) last October doing a two day loop that crossed over the AT with a one night camp. We stayed above the way shelter near bear fence. We set off after breakfast and came down the hill and there was an indian dude squatting right next to the AT intersection taking a dump. Over it. We're going to flagpole this fall. At least you need a 4x4 to get up there and it's way out of the way.

Virginia is for Lovers and there is no way in hell you would LOVE in Va?

Seriously though, that mountainous area of Rock Fish Gap / Afton almost all the way down to Roanoke and a bit to the northeast is nice. I'm not that familiar with that much of VA to comment on other areas though.
