^ Probably will still need a few games to get back into the groove though. Still, I look forward to future threads that clamor for Peters after Ward struggles in his first few appearances.

While we're pointing stuff out, then, we should probably point out that Jordan Staal's Corsi and Fenwick are both way in front for the Canes -- and considering he's facing top lines every night, that's pretty damned good.

I agree. I keep saying, while he isn't scoring, and he needs to, he is contributing in other ways.

All great points but that doesn't excuse the number of dumb penalties he's committed and his backchecking have both been Skinner-circa-2012. Perhaps not the last game or two. His Corsi may be good but other intangibles have not necessarily been and he is perfectly capable of those on a near-nightly basis.

One thing that should help Eric enormously will be having Malhotra to reliably handle PK and defensive zone duties. Last game was the first time we have really rolled four lines, and we were able to do it specifically because of the 4th line not being a total cluster.

Another factor is that he has been playing point on the PP, and frankly he is awful at it. A forward who plays the point needs to be capable of recovering when the puck gets past him, and Eric's go-to move is a flat-footed reach with his stick. Muller needs to know when to just cut bait with the whole idea, and out Eric back in a position that he can handle.

It sucks, but really won't hurt the team too much if the other players step it up

So, if you think Eric Staal is lazy, it means you weren't a fan of this team before they won the Cup. Got it.

I guess I need to change my timeline to fit this narrative.

So..what you are REALLY saying(based on the past several games) is this:

"It sucks, and really will hurt them team when other players don't step it up"

I'm hoping the last minute goal will wake the Staals up, but I'm not holding my breath.

Agree with this. Staal was pretty much controller-disconnected status on Couturier's short-handed chance (that he should have scored on). I think Staal is better around the net anyway, where he can use his quickness to snatch up those loose pucks that we never seem to take advantage of.

Cam getting close:

Cam Ward joined the Carolina Hurricanes on the ice Sunday for a 30-minute practice in what was another important step forward for the goaltender.

Ward has recently been skating with other injured players and assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour. On Saturday, he put in a brief on-ice session at the tail end of the team’s morning skate.

Sunday marked his first practice with the team since suffering a lower-body injury on Oct. 24 in Minnesota. Head coach Kirk Muller circled up with Ward at center ice after practice.

“He just told me that today was a pretty good day, that he was feeling good,” Muller said. “Tomorrow he wants to get a full practice in with the guys and monitor it as the practices roll along here.”

At the time of his injury, the prognosis was that he’d be sidelined for three to four weeks. Thursday, Nov. 14 will mark the three-week point, which puts Ward a bit ahead of schedule, certainly not a bad thing for the Canes who are currently without both their No. 1 and No. 2 goaltenders.

Looking ahead at the schedule, Tuesday’s tilt against the Colorado Avalanche isn’t a true option for Ward at this point, as he will require a few team practices before he’s ready to man the crease for a 60-minute game.

“We’ve just got to watch and see him improve each day … before he gets pain free, solid and healthy,” Muller said.

An earliest possible return could be the upcoming weekend back-to-back set with Anaheim and St. Louis. But even that isn’t etched in stone, as it is entirely dependent on how Ward responds to full team practices.

“He needs to be healthy and 100 percent,” Muller said. “He needs practices, and he needs to be looking sharp and confident.”

In other injury news, defenseman Tim Gleason rejoined the Canes at practice today, as well, while Jeff Skinner, Anton Khudobin and Kevin Westgarth continue to put in on-ice work on their own. A full, up-to-date injury report can be found here.

I think that's what makes the lack of offense so maddening. The defense is playing very well. If the offense were merely average, or even scoring 0.5 goals/game better than they currently are (still worse than last year), imagine where they'd be?

So you're saying all the talk about putting a good defense in front of a goaltender to improve a goaltenders stats wasn't BS?

Shocking :sarcasm:

It's because every fan wants to believe their goaltender is special. By crediting the defense, it takes away from the goaltender.
