I don't even think he'd get a 6 year contract nor a $4 million a year cap hit if he were bought out. I'm thinking closer to $3-$3.5 and for probably 3 years, maybe 4 at most. Teams will bring up his buyout riches when negotiating a new contract if he asks for that much. It's possible he gets $4 million a year, but not for 6 years, no way.

Richards is not getting anything close to a long-term deal if he gets bought out. He will probably have to settle for a 2-3 year deal.

If Rangers lose this series without stealing more than a game, I could see Sather making even further changes in getting rid of Richards and Tortorella.

Rangers will have a lot of new contracts to be giving out over the next few years with Stepan, Hagelin, Callahan, Lundqvist, Girardi, Staal all needing new deals in the next few offseasons. The latter four will be big cap hit deals too. Wouldn't surprise me though if they didn't keep Staal after this deal is up. While he's been an important guy for them when he's in the lineup, they do have McDonagh and they'll probably bring McIlrath up soon here and I think they would avoid giving Staal a huge deal with some of his concussion issues and the fact he may end up going down to Carolina to play with his brothers.

To me Rangers might be a dark-horse to perhaps bring Zidlicky in on a one year deal to help out their PP if they can fit his money in.

just used 6yrs/24 mil because the numbers were well rounded. If he gets 3 yrs/12 mil which is more plausible, the numbers are even worse.
24 mil paid in 2011-12 and 12-13. 24 more in amnesty money. 12 mil from 2013-2016.

Thats 60 mil for 5 years of hockey. 12 mil per year annually. Thats over 2 mil more per year than the highest paid player in the league.

im not sure how amnesty money gets paid though. Not sure if he would get a 24 mil lump sum or paid in yearly installments like a salary. Point remains though.

Richards probably would be open to taking a cheaper deal with a contender since he will still get good chunk of $$$ from Rangers

Would love to have Hawks get Richards at affordable rate to fill #2 C spot with Sharp/Hossa on wings in coming years

Sure a few other contenders would be in mix for him as well

If Richards gets amnestied, I could see him taking a deal like what Semin did as a free agent (albeit maybe for a little less on the money). Take a 1 year deal somewhere at a decent salary, try to prove himself, and parlay that into a longer term deal. I know he's already at an age where teams really wouldn't want to give him too long of a deal, but I imagine his stock has fallen enough that with a decreasing cap, he wouldn't exactly get a long term deal right now anyway. Probably his best bet from here, especially since he'll get the majority of the money from his Rangers contract anyway.

If Richards gets cut loose I could see him trying to get a deal with a contender to try and win one more Cup. He'll still be getting his money on any new deal, after having made a ton of money already under his old TB contract and all the up-front money the Rangers gave him, plus the compliance buy-out.

I think Richards would be very selective about where he goes knowing he's now into his 30s.

i would probs take richards but i dunno if he'd come here tho.

There should be other candidates in line if richards get amnestied anyway.

Why do people assume Richards will be amnestied now (especially since he's the 'last' one for them)? If they are going to use it on him it won't be until after next year. He's still a useful player, if overpaid. But after next season's when the cap bill's really going to come due.

Same here. If good enough players are there, they'll probably always be a playoff caliber team. But as long as he is there they are never going anywhere. Its wonderful.

honestly, if you gave them an average goalie instead of lundqvist, they would have been a lottery team this year. it's hilarious how poorly built they are year after year, always bringing in super star after super star expecting each one to be their saving grace when half their team is made up of ahl players.

I don't think so. Semin had the KHL as a fallback if his 1 year tryout failed. If Brad Richards has a bad year, his career is over from a money standpoint.

Nabokov is absolutely atrocious with his angles.

I've started to notice this more and more during the games I've watched. He never seems to be square to the puck. I don't know if he is always like this because he's confident with his glove side or not, but it's bad. For example, correct me if I'm wrong but that OT winner was center of the crossbard. If he was squared up to that shot, it would've hit him in the chest.

Granted that was a one-timer but it's not the only time I've noticed it.

they are not built badly. the coach/system is not right for the players they have.

the thing is, when a coach has been there as long as torts has, they should have been able to build a team that consisted mostly of players that were good for his system by now. they haven't. in fact they've done a pretty good job of getting rid of players that do.

that means either they're not built well, or the gm and coach have a different opinion on how a team should be built, meaning the coach probably never should have been hired in the first place.

I love how they got rid of Anisimov and Dubinsky, who actually fit in their system.

This, this, this.

I blasted Rangers fans who approved of the Nash trade. Told them they ruined the core of their team, but to them Anisimov and Dubinsky were replaceable. I got Rangers fans telling me I was stupid and all this other **** because of it.

I also condoned the Gaborik trade because they basically replaced Dubinsky in Dorsett and Brassard in Anisimov, and although this part didn't really hurt them as much as the other two, Moore in Erixon.

he would still be getting buyout money though, so anything he does make will just be a bonus

for that reason i think he'd probably be willing to take a bit less to go to a team he thinks has a good chance of winning if he were bought out

i don't think he will be though.

I forget, which one of you said "okposo can't play hockey?" I think it was the same one who didn't want to throw a lot to get ovi at his lowest trade value when we were number 1, because "he sucks"

Nabokov is probably the biggest reason that the Islanders series is gonna be so close. It's hard for the Islanders to take advantage of Fleury's average goaltending when they have an even worse option in their own net. :shakehead
