Staal was being 2nd half/playoff Staal the whole year and had two above average linemates for the first time since probably 2006ish.

Semin was playing healthy and in a contract year after signing for a small 1 yr/ $5M the year before.

Tlusty was playing about the same as now but with two all star linemates who opened up tons of space, and as a result his shooting percentage was way higher than average.

Since then everyone pretty much regressed to their career average, with Semin being drastically worse, hopefully because of his wrist.

Pretty much. Everyone was playing above their head, they caught lightning in a bottle, and they couldn't find it again.

Tlusty would dump it in or ring it around, and they would cycle like a fourth line. Two cycles with that skill and the d would break down, which they would take advantage of. Worked all season. Following season tlusty stopped dumping and the other two stopped cycling. They tried to score off the rush or just take it to the net from down low instead of cycling once or twice. Didn't work. Muller got fired.

I don't miss him but I do think that line carried the team during that stretch so when they failed so did he. He also couldn't get the special teams going.

Good analysis. It's interesting to read posts on this site that talk about playing with talent and playing with effort as if they are mutually exclusive. When you combine high level talent with high level work ethic, it yields good results.

The injuries that each player sustained going into 2013/14 also were important...Staal had the MCL sprain, Tlusty got a concussion in training camp, and Semin hurt his wrist early.

Would be interesting to see stats of how many of their goals were from cycling...seems I remember them scoring a decent amount off the rush too. Once you get going, physically impose your will, it sort of primes the pump for the rest of your game though.

On another note - with my purchase of an uncustomized white Starter Hurricanes jersey from Ebay this evening, my Hurricanes jersey collection has been completed. Every jersey the Canes have worn is now part of my collection. I plan on getting this done as a '99-'00 season Francis jersey complete with inaugural season ESA patch, Chiasson memorial patch, NHL 2000 patch, and most importantly to my jersey geek cred....#21. I'll be interested to see if I get anyone asking why it's not #10 instead.

Come on this is amateur stuff. Ronny Franchise wore 21 his first couple season because Gary Roberts had 10, and Brindy wore 27 since Jeff Daniels wore 17 when Rod was traded to Carolina.*

So here's my question - at what point did Francis assume the "C?" Was it to start the season when Primeau held out or was it in 2000 after Primeau got traded to the Flyers for Brindy? I saw a reference to Brindy as "captain" in a team history entry from November of 1999, but wasn't sure if that meant he indeed had the "C" on at that point.
