Speculation: New York Rangers Offseason Status

Had back issues this season. Probably should have been rested and stayed away from the ice. He paced for 26 goals but the overall play significantly dropped and 50% of his assist came in the last 2 weeks... .

He can still PK. He can still skate fast at times, but mostly doesn't use that speed anymore, whether it's because he can't, he's hurt, or just doesn't put the effort in. A big production drop on the powerplay, but they were also one of the biggest disappointments on the powerplay, so potentially he'd be more productive in a different environment and healthy, but at 6.5 it's risky for other teams and they would probably feel more comfortable around 5m.
I mean, of all these reasons it's likely he's simply not 100%. The risk is whether a guy at his age that relies on his tools will be able to rebound next year.

Devs fan here that doesn't blindly hate the Rags. I mean, I do hate them of course, but try to be somewhat objective on their season outlook. I expected them to be the #2/3 in the Metro this season for example...with a shot at #1.

This is the first time in a while I think they are in trouble. The roster construction age wise and relatively mediocre prospect pool is a big timing issue. The trades they've been making don't make much sense from a value or roster construction perspective either....aside from the JT Miller trade, which they'd be 100% screwed near term without.

That said, the Metro is so weak that the Rags could easily be the 3 seed next year. The only teams clearly better than them are the Caps and Canes (maybe Devs if Hughes ever rounds out his game and stops getting hurt). But that still puts them in purgatory with no real shot to contend.
Well said. This is the first time in a long time that I feel uncertainty around the Rangers, and I don’t trust Drury.

First things first, they need to fire Drury and put in a proper President of Hockey Operations, go up and down the organization and rebuild it. Scouting, drafting, player development, etc.

As far as a coach, I wish they’d go with a younger coach with fresh ideas. Stop getting guys off the NHL Coaching Carousel and get a guy that can properly see a players strengths and weaknesses and put them in a position to succeed.

Roster-wise I’d really like to see an emphasis on defense, specially a proper Top 4 LHD that can either player with Fox, or establish a proper shutdown pairing. Moving on from Kreider and Mika needs to happen, both for the Rangers sake and theirs. Both need a fresh start.
Marcus Pettersson formerly of Pitt would have been a great add to Foxys partner

The first thing the Rangers need to do is ask Panarin is price for an extension. If it is too high or too long (both likely), they need to thank him for his service and ask for a few teams he would be willing to be traded to and make it happen. Trading him would open up a lot of possibilities and could prevent them from trading an asset at a low value point just for the sake of the cap.
Say whatever you want about Kreider, but if his back is not totally ruined, he has value to the Rangers for next year (3rd line - special teams player) and potentially as a rental to trade the next.
Unless Zibanejad is moving to the wing, I do not see how he fits long term with the other centers. With the cap going up, retaining on him a small amount might make sense because I believe he would have good value at the right number.
I agree with what some other people have said in that I would prioritize a top 4 LD.
Also would love Marner (because of his well rounded game) if Panarin plus one of Kreider or Zibanejad got moved

Pushing through the pain to be on the four nations team instead of resting did not help. He still has his speed but he frequently doesn't access that extra gear so that points to a physical issue to me.

I would point out that despite his down year, Kreider still remains at #13 in the league for total goals scored over the last 5 seasons.

In the same timeframe, Zibanejad is #14 overall in the league in points.

These are valuable players in this league and if you get them at a discount, realize what the original price would have been and work from there.

The Ranger's biggest issue is their lack of culture and identity. We had a great No Quit in NY thing going on last year. I don't know where that came from or why they abandoned it. But coming off their loss in the playoffs, into the Goodrow waiving, and then the Trouba drama shattered their culture from playing to win to playing to not lose which is not how champions play. Things really fell apart in the locker room. A lot of players need to be a part of the solution or just need a change of scenery. Even JT Miller seems to have been infected by the team's melancholy mood which is saying a lot. But these are all extremely talented players still.

What’s the price on Braden Schneider?
Drury refused to include him in the JTM trade and there is no reason for the Rangers to trade him. He fills a position of need and trading him would create a hole so ask yourself, what player or package makes having that hole at RHD, with a young, cost controlled player actually worth it? Assume Drury also is going to try and save his job here so while fans could entertain wild picks and prospect packages, I don't think anything like that would actually be realistic. Most likely, Schneider would not be the best player in the deal for it to happen.

Rangers are in tough spots with a few players. Kreider is likely gone but they have to attach a first or other picks. Panarin likely will ask for too much term but i bet they settle. Ziba is aging and his game, built on one timers and speed, does not figure to age well.
My educated guess says they move Kreider and a couple of picks and replace him with Boeser or another actual net front player.

Zero chance they move a first to get rid of Kreider.

Rangers only do that if they can turn those assets around immediately.

Have to imagine the Rangers retool.

From the Rangers theres a lot of players the habs would have interest in.
Rangers going to be freeing up a lot of caproom in this deal also.

Those picks are solid picks, in Brady Martin, Cole Reschny, Aitcheson, Carter Bear area. Whichever two they want.

100%, but if there isn't someone for the Rangers to bring in, so if there isn't another trade, or they know they can sign someone, they're not trading regulars for futures.

They want to retool and go at it again. At least, that's what I imagine their goal is.

If they can dump Kreider that would open up a spot and cap space.

Really feels like the org needs to do a full reset at this point. I don't think the market is in the mood for a full rebuild but it's probably what its going to take.

Habs give you a first for Schneider? Maybe both our first if Lafreniere in deal?
No.
Both picks are after 15. That doesn't really work. At the end of the day, both are still roster players logging bigger minutes and more valuable than potential non-roster players.

Rangers going into a full on rebuild is one thing, but trading 2 23 years olds to kick start that seems counter productive.
