Speculation: New York Rangers Offseason Status

Sharks fan coming in peace. What’s a fair package from the Sharks for K. Miller and Zibanejad looks like? Obviously there is the Grier connection, so that probably helps Drury choose to pick up the phone; and I think the Sharks have cap space and roster deficits where both players may be more valuable to the Sharks than other teams.

As a conversation starter, here is a proposal:

:rangers
2025 SJS #2nd (#33OA)
Filip Bystedt (2022 #27OA)
Henry Thrun/Jack Thompson

:sharks
Zibanejad ($1.5 retained)
K’Andre Miller

In the case that I’m way off (I probably am) here’s other assets I think Sharks fan’s would arguably put on the table as part of some package:

Picks:
25 DAL 1st, 25 OTT 2nd
26 EDM 1st, 26 SJS 2nd, 26 COL 2nd

Anyone not named: Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Askarov, Dickinson, Chernyshov, Mukhamadullin

I would think a single 3rd round pick would be fair value for Zibanejad and Miller. I’m a Rangers fan and I am not joking. I’d be thrilled to get them off our team.

Bystedt, Thrun, and 33OA? Steal of the century.

New York Rangers' Offseason Status: "It's Complicated"
Replace “complicated” with “f***ed” and it would be a lot more accurate. After all, this is the potato running this organization:

Thankfully Panarin's contract runs out after next year. So that should be addition by subtraction, but sadly the Rangers have 1-1/2 forward lines and a patchwork quilt that is almost threadbare of a defense corps.

ETA: I wonder if the play, for any NYR GM, is to retain 50% on Panarin and see what you can get for him, knowing the cap increase will eat that and you can still probably add a decent forward or defenceman

First things first, they need to fire Drury and put in a proper President of Hockey Operations, go up and down the organization and rebuild it. Scouting, drafting, player development, etc.

As far as a coach, I wish they’d go with a younger coach with fresh ideas. Stop getting guys off the NHL Coaching Carousel and get a guy that can properly see a players strengths and weaknesses and put them in a position to succeed.

Roster-wise I’d really like to see an emphasis on defense, specially a proper Top 4 LHD that can either player with Fox, or establish a proper shutdown pairing. Moving on from Kreider and Mika needs to happen, both for the Rangers sake and theirs. Both need a fresh start.

San Jose is a team on the rise. Why do you want to squander precious assets trading for these bums?

If you're taking Zibanejad, that changes everything involving Miller being traded for what you're offering. To take a defensemen and play him next season, Rangers need to either send Urho Vaakanainen or find another home for him. They don't have room unless somebody is sent down.

This is selling low on Miller who I think would look much better with a different couch not utilizing man on man, and played well next to Fox, but the goal here would be to remove Zibanejad's cap for the next 5 years. In the end, I would probably ask for Edmonton's 1st or SJ 2nd in 2026 instead of the 2025 pick, and try to come up with something on NYR side that makes sense for SJ. Say what you want about K. Miller and his brain farts, but most mid-round picks aren't producing a player like that.

Rangers will start the 2025-2026 season with 0 retained salaries. If you toss in Zibanejad and potentially Kreider, you're using 2 of them for multi-seasons. That gotta' be careful with that.

Halttunen is available?

NYR are screwed, they made the mistake of trying to fasten their (supposedly assumed) rebuild and now they have a roster full of players in their thirties with big/long contracts...

There's no short terms solution for this team

Maybe they get back to playoff contention short term but the middle/long term horizon is not so encouraging for them

kreiders 15 team ntc, zibby's full nmc makes things extremely tough

Only projected to have 10 million roughly in cap space while needing to resign cuylle and miller at least

even soucy has a 12 team ntc...why lol

they might have to move laf, or take complete garbage returns for their ntc players or run back the same team essentially

I mean, I’m just some dude on HFBoards. I couldn’t answer with authority. However, my suspicion is that for an upgrade on defense or a very productive top 6 forward Halttunen could be gotten. I’m sure some will say Miller and Zibanejad are neither of those things… but I think they could be.

I’m sorry, I don’t follow. I think your saying to defenseman as part of a package for Zibanejad + Miller doesn’t work because the Rangers wouldn’t have room for the new defenseman? I figured it Thrun/Thompson would be far cheaper roster replacements for Miller, and the Rangers can choose their preference in RD/LD. But fair enough, you would know the Rangers roster needs way better than me.

IMO, Miller’s potential is the incentive for the Sharks to take the risk Zibanejad’s contract. Since you prefer it, starting with 2026 Sharks 2nd, what do the Sharks add to get you to begrudgingly accept the trade?

If Rangers go into next season with 4-7 roles filled by Schneider,Thrun/Thompson/Soucy/Vaak they have a problem. With Miller gone they need an actual Dman in the top 4 and Schneider hasn't really been that yet. In the bottom role they have too many, somebody would need to be sent down or traded.

No complaints at all regarding either the coach or GM. Give them multi year extensions!
You got your own problems to work on, bud. Godfather Lou gave Pierre Engvall a 7-year deal with a 16 team NTC. Talk about an offer you can't refuse!

Is Kreider done? Wouldn’t mind him retained as a contingency plan for getting goalied.
Had back issues this season. Probably should have been rested and stayed away from the ice. He paced for 26 goals but the overall play significantly dropped and 50% of his assist came in the last 2 weeks... .

He can still PK. He can still skate fast at times, but mostly doesn't use that speed anymore, whether it's because he can't, he's hurt, or just doesn't put the effort in. A big production drop on the powerplay, but they were also one of the biggest disappointments on the powerplay, so potentially he'd be more productive in a different environment and healthy, but at 6.5 it's risky for other teams and they would probably feel more comfortable around 5m.

Devs fan here that doesn't blindly hate the Rags. I mean, I do hate them of course, but try to be somewhat objective on their season outlook. I expected them to be the #2/3 in the Metro this season for example...with a shot at #1.

This is the first time in a while I think they are in trouble. The roster construction age wise and relatively mediocre prospect pool is a big timing issue. The trades they've been making don't make much sense from a value or roster construction perspective either....aside from the JT Miller trade, which they'd be 100% screwed near term without.

That said, the Metro is so weak that the Rags could easily be the 3 seed next year. The only teams clearly better than them are the Caps and Canes (maybe Devs if Hughes ever rounds out his game and stops getting hurt). But that still puts them in purgatory with no real shot to contend.
