When at a steak house, I usually have work dinners to attend. Usually everyone can find something to eat.

Top steakhouses that do not feel like steakhouses (and you can eat things other than steak):

Beatrice Inn (is it a real steakhouse though?)

Been meaning to try Cote. Also St. Anselm. I make a damn good steak at home so I avoid the restaurant markup unless it's really worth it. If I'm craving red meat out, it's usually in the form of a burger or Korean BBQ.

Best burgers for the buck I've had are:

1. Emily
2. Paul's Da Burger Joint
3. Raoul's off-menu bar burger

I never had it, but I always thought it was a pretty dumb and pointless concept. I believe M Wells has taken it off the menu now.

Di Fara has been back for a few months but Dom is basically out of the game at this point and his children are not making pies the way he did. I hate to say it but the place is transforming into a tourist trap just capitalizing on a famous name. They even went so far as to advertise at a Bronx pizza festival a few weeks ago that Dom would be there and, surprise!, he was nowhere to be found.

Di Fara when Dom was there was unbelievable. I feel bad for all the people going now for the first time who don't even realize that they missed the boat.

I tried it once, never again.

The location off the strip is better, but it's still nothing like the slices in Brooklyn. Believe me, the family cares nothing about the product out here, so it doesn't surprise me they're letting the pizza quality tank in favor of profits.

They mention a Legendary Ranger that went down in a scary situation, and then more recently his son went down in a bad way as well - anyone know who this is? Messier?

The one in Caesars is embarrassing. The pizza doesn't even resemble a NY slice, it's so undercooked, you can't even fold it. Plus they have the balls to charge $22 for 2 slices & a drink. I tried it once, never again.

The location off the strip is better, but it's still nothing like the slices in Brooklyn. Believe me, the family cares nothing about the product out here, so it doesn't surprise me they're letting the pizza quality tank in favor of profits.

I went when I was a kid with my father and the novelty was fun - no menus, sawdust on the floor. Went back later as an adult a few times and was really underwhelmed. Never bad. But hardly the end all be all it has been talked up as.

Made a reservation at Keens next month for a date night with the wife. Looking forward to that. And I don’t have travel to Brooklyn or bring cash.

BZ, I'm spending a few days on the strip over New Year's. Can you throw some local recommendations my way?

I go to Vegas 2-3 times per year and will be there around the same time as you, though I usually don't venture far from the strip so take this for what it's worth from a tourist perspective (often comped). I mentioned upthread my mancrush for Delmonico's at the Venetian. But for the traditional vegas steak special on the cheap you can't go wrong with ellis island behind Bally's. My preferred burger joint is Holsteins at Cosmo but I also like gordon ramsay burger at planet hollywood. I have not had a good slice of pizza in Vegas ever and that includes both Di Fara's and Grimaldis. I stopped trying. For Italian though I like Battista's across the street from Bally's or Don Vito's at South Point (if you have to wait there is a $1.25 hot dog cart for snacking at the sportsbook). For traditional deli sandwiches I believe there is still a Carnegie Deli at Mirage (but no longer at the Sands Wind Creek in Bethlehem) - I always liked it though I also like Earl of Sandwich so maybe I'm not so discriminating when it comes to sandwiches. For chinese I've stood for hours watching them making noodles at beijing no. 9 noodle at caesars. It's pretty good to eat too but I'm sure there are better local places that meet NY standards (unlike pizza) - eg there is Noodles at Bellagio but I was only there once. For seafood I like Yellowtail at Bellagio (especially as I haven't had to pay). Best buffet is Bacchanal at Caesars but it'll be ridiculously expensive that time of the year with huge lines despite the price. Go only with a comp or at the very least a line pass and a big appetite (they will sell line passes for about the price of bellagio's buffet).

Oscar’s has a nice old Vegas kind of feel to it if you want a chop house or steak.

If you want to take a short cab ride, The Artisan Hotel can be a fun place to grab a drink or three.

Ditto for Raku for Chinese.

Fried chicken? Try crack shack.

Top of the World if you want the best views in Vegas, though not necessarily “THE” best food.

looking for a place to walk around, try Downtown and Fremont street.

Want something a little more main stream, with chains, try Town Square - numerous options there. Brio, Yardhouse, Texas de Brazil.

Best Thai food in the US is at Lotus of Siam. It's off the strip.

Public House at the Venetian is very good and the lunch pre-fixe at Estiatorio Milos at Cosmopolitan is one of the better deals in Vegas.
