there was one play in the first period tonight where the puck was coming around the boards behind the goal and wilson was bearing down in nemec, and nemec let the puck go by him so when wilson went to play the puck instead of go for the hit, nemec made a nifty poke check before it got to him and then won the battle and moved it out.

most d men would have either held onto the puck and taken the hit from wilson, or blindly grenade handle it but nemec made such a smart, poised decision that was sort of a subtle, nothing play in the game but was just as impressive anything

Nico almost had 3 goals in first period with 10 mins left in 1st. That kinda domination by the mercer Nico Haula line. Nico on a mission.

Mercer great game

Holtz great game.

mcleod great game

Haula good game.

Jack not so good.

Everyone else pretty good.
Everyone else pretty good?

Bratt and Toffoli were doing their best Michael Ryder impression since they were so invisible tonight.

Only thing of note from Bratt was him drawing a penalty.

Toffoli was just there.

nemec is the defenseman that i’ve been waiting for for 15+ years - smart, makes the right plays, doesn’t panic, good on both sides of the puck, and he’s ours for the next decade. a real foundational piece for a stanley cup.

luke has unique otherworldly skills, but nemec is going to be the anchor of the blue line
I really think he’s already the best defenseman on the team. I feel most comfortable when he’s out there. He’s gonna be a 25+ minute guy pretty early in his career.

Its insane, absolutely insane. I have seen young Dman look incredible in the offensive zone, but VERY seldom in the d zone. We have something special in him

Yeah. Bastian has a good game. Bratt was fine and Toffoli wasn't bad either. Lazar made some good drives in the first. Again. Pretty good from everyone for the most part.

Jack was only sort of relatively sore spot, mainly on the PP turnovers.

Thank god Nemec has done what he's done.

I'm starting to worry about Siegs. Hopefully just a down year. His salary/cap hit isn't too high, but he's still signed for another 4 years I think. Maybe he'd be better in bottom pairing role and not this 20 minute role.

Shuhh Moan has been playing some decent enough hockey on the back end for the NJD, but unfortunately Jiricek will be the better D man. I still think Shane Wright will be better than Nico and quite possibly Jack, but I hope I'm wrong.

The Devils have fewer OT games than other teams because of A: general luck B: they play a high scoring style and C: they are running atrociously with the net empty. They have 9 empty net goals against and only 14 regulation losses. They have 2 6v5 goals, one of which I think is a delayed penalty and the other is Luke Hughes's goal the other night.

Jiricek jackets fans are fun. They hyped his pp production from ahl. Can't accept that Nemec is better for a long stretch. And it wouldn't be a big problem, if they wouldn't shout about it in the public. Higher ceiling, just need more time in AHL)

2017 draft year.
Devils drafted Nico 1OA
Devils got "Nolan Patrick" in Mercer - good two way scorer type player.
Devils got "Miro" in Nemec
Devils got "Makar" in Luke.
Devils got "Petterson" in Jack.

So I think we can finally stop to cry about Nico as a bad pick?
Yeah, but what about Oettinger? He's better than Nico and was picked behind him, and we still don't have a good young goalie yet!:sarcasm:

I don't think many are crying about the Nico pick anymore. Other than that guy above me, but that's just kind of his schtick.

And I don't think he's complaining about Nico with that Shane Wright comment, as much as he's complaining about Nemec!:sarcasm:

I’m not sure how anyone looks at us versus the islanders and thinks we’re the unlucky ones. The islanders have more OTL because the islanders don’t get the absolute shit kicked out of them once every three games.

if the islanders didn’t blow so many late leads, something that has at least a little bit to do with poor luck, they’d be a lot closer to the rangers than to us.

they’re not built for 3-on-3 hockey or the shootout. but they grind games out with the best of them, and they keep themselves close even when they don’t have their A game. Wish I could say the same about the Devils, (glares at Vanecek).

Thought the Devils looked awesome tonight. hope they can build on that.

Yeah, the weird idea and narrative that we have a ''Young, inexperienced D and that's why we're worse defensively. We just have too many kids playing too big of roles on D'' really needs to die with the Nemec call up.

Siegenthaler's regression, Marino's to a degree and losing Severson from the bottom pairing is more to blame.

Severson is a combo of him leaving and being largely replaced by Smith, who is a 5 on 5 nightmare.

Siegs regression is the biggest issue.

No Dougie does cause issues too.

There’s no way you watch the Isles play because this is categorically false

They are literally 29th in expected goals differential and I’ve watched many of their games and it matches the eye test. They have been extremely fortunate to be in many games this season

I just wish some of the weirdos in this fanbase wouldn't make it a Luke vs Nemec thing
Kind of reminds me of 10 years ago with the Larsson vs Merrill vs Gelinas (LOL) stuff.

By the way, both are a TON better than any of those three.

Not any of them were ever expected to be as good as as the two current kids, other than Larsson right out of his draft maybe.

Severson is a combo of him leaving and being largely replaced by Smith, who is a 5 on 5 nightmare.

The reason I left out Smith was because he did play almost every game last year (or the majority of them) up until around February or so.

But I'm pretty sure last year's Smith was better than this year's Smith.

They need another LD to push him down to 3rd pairing.
