What debacle.... He's mispronouncing his own first name to make it easier for Americans supposedly, just like Chára has done for decades. :help: The correct pronunciation is SHE-monn NEH-mets.
So it's not SEE but SHE?

Maybe he was nervous again and didn't realize what he said until it was already over?

So SHE-monn NEH-mets.

Guarantee you that the PA announcer (who is as s--tty as they come) will butcher his name badly as will, naturally, Dano.

1000% SHE. That's what the diacritic sign over S is for. It's Šimon, not Simon.

So SHE-monn NEH-mets.

That's correct. :thumbu:

(You could be overly technical and insist it's NYEAH-mets rather than NEH-mets, but let's not complicate it more than necessary... That was also Šimon's intention in mispronouncing his own first name, but I think SHE is just as easy to pronounce for English speakers as SEE, so no need to mispronounce it...

Now, Zdeno Chára just gave up on the non-existing CH sound in English, and he just accepted and endorsed the severe mispronunciation of his last name for all these decades. But I can understand that.)

Maybe he was nervous again and didn't realize what he said until it was already over?

Yeah, these are young/nervous/self-conscious kids, and the last thing they wish is to create the impression as if they were fussy about the correct pronunciation of their names in a foreign country where they are about to launch their careers...

Granted I don't think Nemec was thinking of this, but Quebecois players named Simon are pronounced that way (Gagne, Despres), and we just don't have that diacritic in English so I think it's going to be a coinflip whether broadcasters say Simon or Shemon.

There's a difference in stress, though. Each and every Slovak and Czech name (and word), no exception, is pronounced with stress on the first syllable. (At least something that's easy to grasp for those foreigners who, ill-advisedly, decide to learn Slovak or Czech!)

So, with Nemec, it's SHE-monn (stress on the first syllable), whereas for the French name, it's si-MON (stress on the second syllable, and with the typical "nasal" N sound that doesn't exist in Slovak or Czech).

I did notice with the Czech player Dominik Simon (former Penguin and Duck) that some NHL announcers tended to pronounce his last name in the "French" way: si-MON. But that can't be, because there is no Slovak or Czech name or word with stress on the second syllable.

So for the Czech player, he really is SEE-monn, because he's Simon, not Šimon. But our young draftee here (future Hall of Famer, as all of us in this country hope!), he has that diacritic sign over S, Šimon, so it's SHE-monn.

Is it any different than "Jesper" vs "Yesper"?

Well the Marino trade makes it much more likely he’ll start in Utica save for injuries. Could still very likely get a chance at some point or even come in full-time if Severson is traded before the deadline.

Playing in Utica will also allow him to likely QB the powerplay, and have a little bit more leeway. Maybe a path for this season is:
- Training camp
- Utica
- World Juniors
- New year called up to The Devils and if he plays well he stays and if he needs more time back to Utica

There is a situation where the team cashes out on Graves and Seversom at the DL and replace them with Nemec and Hughes.

Depends where the team is at come the deadline.
We probably don’t see Luke until well after the trade deadline. He probably stays in school until after the NCAA playoffs.

Hard to see him getting any substantial time given our RD depth. Maybe a call up at the end of the season if we miss the playoffs but I think they keep him under 10 games.

Yea maybe Fitz pulls a Shero - Henrique for Vatanen early season special if Nemec is deemed to good for the AHL.

I agree. If our goaltending is average we should be a bubble team and then we would have some tough decisions to make. If we aren’t making it then we have 2 really nice trade pieces, altho 2023 1sts should be hard to get at this trade deadline with the deep draft coming. As said above, Hughes wouldn’t come in until his college season is over.
