Certainly, defensemen that can produce offense have more value...but if you consider Fowler to be a "slightly better" defenseman than Larsson you are severly underestimating the impact of their contract. Larsson has 5 years remaining on his contract at a good cap hit. Fowler could leave in 2 years for nothing or if he stays, he's certainly taking up significantly more cap space than Larsson in years 3-5 since as you said, those that can produce offense have more value on the open market.
Yeah, no ****. That's why I included "which many in this thread have suggested it would take" immediately after mentioning Zacha.
To the first part of your response:
I agree contracts play a role but I'm factoring that in. Reality is Fowler is a slightly better player than Larsson and will be a better two-way player for his team given his ability to create offense. Were he to be traded today, given Anaheim's needs they'd get a Hall type return from any team who was in need of a puck moving top 4 D such as Fowler. Whether you want to say said return is better or worse than Hall is completely subjective but it would be similar. If you'd like to get nit-picky with whose more valuable you can do that on your own.
To the second response: cool your jets, big guy.
