New Head Coach-who will it be?

I don't even know what we're trying to do so it is hard to think about coaches right now.

I had zero faith in Bylsma but the FO canning him just feels like grasping at straws. I'm afraid they think the roster is a lot better than it is.

It's amazing that he continues to get hc jobs.

He deserves to be Mike Keenaned by the league's GM's.

This isn't a Torts thread, so I'll keep it short. He was head coach for six years in Columbus and was loved by fans, staff, and players. Four playoff appearances.

What “good old boy” retreads who were fired under a cloud are hanging around out there? Torts? Quenneville? Boudreau? That’s where my money is at…

Would be good to be a little patient atleast till the end (or close to) of the playoffs. i.e unless you really want to get fresh blood from the AHL, juniors or NCAA. I would really like to not get a retread but expect that is what we get.

I’d prefer Boudreau or Quenneville.

Tocchet might be out there if Vancouver lets him walk explore the market, although their local radio voices make it sound like they’re prepared to make him the highest-paid coach in franchise history ($3M/year, iirc).

David Carle at Denver University and Pat Ferschweiler at Western Michigan are likely getting interviews from some NHL clubs. The good people at Sound of Hockey mention Laviolette looking for a job but having a not-good track record with Kakko, Mike Sullivan, and Rod Brind’Amour. I’m surprised Brind-Amour got mentioned but if he becomes available I’d love to see him on the Seattle bench.

The only names you mention that even remotely interest me are Carle and Ferschweiler. The rest are a horror show of duds.

Agreed. I don't see Carle coming here either; he is going to get his pick of the best situation and team direction for him to walk into. It's well opined around here that we *have* no direction, lol.
Rumor has it Philly is pretty keen on Ferschweiler as well, and has one of his guys in their system.

This coming from a Blackhawks’ fan…

Your next coach will be Joel Quenneville…

NHL is an old boys club, small fraternity, I know from experience that hirings, management comfort, tends to lean towards ‘known commodities…

Ron Francis goes WAAAAAAAY back with Q to the old Hartford Whalers days…maybe even get Kevin Dineen as an assistant

That doesnt mean anything. Some of us connected those same dots last off-season with his Whalers connection to Evason, and he didnt go that way.

I do have a feeling that they go with a more experienced HC because they tried Hakstol and Bylsma without who failed. I can see them looking at some college coaches but would be surprised if they do go that way.

I don't think we will go the way of coach Q because they have tried to keep a pretty clean profile so far.

Since we're pivoting to a Sabres retread, perhaps we should gird our loins for rumors of Krueger or Granato. Maybe even Housley!

Trying to think of whom I'd prefer out of the list of usual suspects, since it's probably going to be one of them. Boudreau maybe?
Boudreau, Laviolette, Tocchet (maybe), etc. I am thinking they go with a proven coach over an NCAA coach like Carle, Ferschweiler because I feel like they would prefer experience and someone the players will respect. Hakstol and Bylsma are more player friendly coaches and the 3 vet coaches I mentioned are more likely to push the players.

Laviolette is an idiot who can't think outside the box. He simply follows the same hoary old NHL template from the dawn of time and pretends he's "coaching". He flamed out badly in Washington (look at how the Caps revitalized themselves by canning Laviolette and replacing him with a bright young head coach along with some smart trades); his NYR tenure was a nightmare of stupidity with the predicable result (I followed it closely). But yeah, bring in Laviolette and Housley that's the ticket... /S.

Tocchet is another Old Boy's Club idiot who reflexively follows a template but doesn't really have a brain of his own.

Bringing in some idiot Dino retread at this stage would show exactly how rudderless this org is.

It definitely looks like this org is screwed. Owners serially hiring known failures then panicking and randomly pushing buttons and yanking levers when things predictably go pearshaped is not a recipe for success.

I want a coach with experience that does not have his name on the Stanley Cup.
Yes. I think this would be the optimal thing to do. Look for a candidate who has been able to get more out of the roster than the talent on the team.

ECH seemed to imply in yesterdays podcast that Bylsma (and maybe even Hakstol) are the type of coaches who would just accept that fact that players like Bura are not going to play a 200 ft game and wouldn't even try to get them to do that. That is fine when you have Makar's, Rantanen's and MacKinnon's on your team to make up for that. Not so much with our teams talent.

Well, that's how NHL teams operate.

After bringing in two guys no one thought of or had any interest of even interviewing I expect them to bring in a "proven coach".

Though, if they want to do so I'd rather they wait until after the playoffs and actually interview a couple of guys before making a deciosn.

If not just bring in Torts.
At least the interviews would be fun with him telling the guy asking the question "yeah, well, that's a stupid question".

I want a coach with experience that does not have his name on the Stanley Cup.

Sounds guood, but why would that guy want to come here?
