From what I understand we were the first team in North American sports to use it.

So yes, I do think it is different.

The song started when we were the Colorado Rockies ....The Devils are in a tough spot. They can't appease both segment of fans. If you note on this board most(not all) of those who like the you suck are under 25 and have grown up in a much less civil society where suck doesnt have the same meaning it once did. I put Hell, crap and *******(which you can say on TBS) in the same group. Us who are older bring kids and yes...own more of the season tickets are not as enamored with the chant. This board is a passionate yet vocal minority. The fan base didnt really boo Ole or Blur. The song they chose was terrible and this was part of the problem.

I do not think they made this decision lightly. They must have received alot of complaints from those who spend the most money to make this choice,

So instead, at the 10 minute mark of each period, for a FULL MINUTE of play, the ENTIRE crowd should start simply chanting "xxxxxx's SUCK" for whoever the opponent is. No prompting, not tied to any goal, nothing.....the can't take that away if the fans, en mass, all start doing that.....

The Diablos would clap for Marty and the whole 3 for 30 thing - they could start up the chant at the 10 minute mark and let the rest of the crowd join in!

Pass the word....take control of our freedom of speech! ...and I will still cheer loudly until the song plays and then will boo......I am not booing my team, I'm booing the management for having so little regard for us season ticket holders and all fans in general.

They could have increased preseason attendance by playing the new songs and letting fans vote in person with ballots.

I'm 43, been a fan since 82', a season ticket holder the past 3 years and bring my 7 and 9 year old boys to the game...we all love the You Suck chant...it's the rangers suck, flyers swallow chant that I think is really in very poor taste, espcially when the kids ask what the Flyers swallow....:(

Even if there were no complaints, I won't make too many assumptions on that end, in retrospect, I think we should have seen this coming.

When the new owners spoke to the media the first time, there was an emphasis on gaining more corporate sponsors and bringing in more families.

Those are the target demographics for all the empty black seats and luxury boxes that they're looking to sell.

If getting rid of a very aggressive 'you suck' chant was an intention to grow the fan base/revenue, it certainly came with a sacrifice. But it is, more than most likely, an attempt to grow the fan base, increase revenues and keep the place packed.

The diehards will show up no matter what, it's the fickle ones hovering on the fence that they're trying to lure in.

There will be ways to keep the crowd alive with or without our old goal song (so long as it's not that horrid choice they selected the other night) - but this was likely an ill fated first step at accomplishing some of the owners' many goals.

But that's NOT what's being talked about here.

I know that.

I was specifically referring to GIC post etc.... about the guy who think he "can yell whatever the **** he wants, whenever he wants as soon as he steps inside the building" because he bought a ticket.

BG, I don't want to make this personal, but you've been targeting those who view this situation a certain way and name-calling throughout. Yet, you're the exact same thing you criticize. I think that's what people are trying to point out. You're the other extreme. It's not much better, if better at all.

Not really. This isnt that complicated.

I have had a few opinions that havent changed over the years.

1) I never liked the Devils using the song of a pedofile child r*pist who r*ped literally DOZENS (probably hundreds) of children internationally, and who also distributed kiddie pornography.

2) I dont think it's classy behaviour to scream "you suck" everytime the Devils score a goal, and I also fall into the second camp that thinks it's dumb.

EDIT: And if any of the above [now 2] opinions make me "extreme", then I'll probably never be more content to hold "extremist" views.

I said that person is being entitled, it's not a public place, you can't do whatever you want even if it's within the law of the land.

But for you not to understand how the company isn't being entitled here too, I don't know how you can't see that

I am 31 and a season ticket holder of 4 years in the lower bowl. Almost everyone sitting near me is pissed about this. And yes, I'm aware that is anecdotal.

To another one of your points: why not appease the younger set? They will be the ones who will (hopefully) be driving this organization forward financially for decades to come.

And spare me the indignation. I'll take sucks and **** as being a part of common vernacular as opposed to some of the abhorrent things past generations are guilty of in this country.

The Devils are a private company, and you are entering their domain.

They quite literally set the rules of decorum and/or any other rules they see fit in their building, whether you like those rules or not.

That is not "entitlement", it's the law, and by your purchase of the ticketing contract you're de facto acknowledging that.

Ostensibly you're correct. 100%. In reality, the Devils will find a balance between "their rules" and the fans. Hence making guy's point very accurate.

Again, on paper you're 100% right. But we both know that the Devils don't set rules as they see fit in their building. They listen to the fans because the fans pay the bills.

They are being entitled because they think they can dictate policies with any interaction and expect to keep their customers or have no pushback. That is entitlement. They feel they are entitled to customers no matter what.

Hell, their new "ticket broker" policy is the epitome of entitlement.

Please..this is one of the most moronic things I've read...one has nothing to do with the other...I'm a season ticket holder of 27 years and all the people I have gone to games with since 1982 think the chant is stupid. To me its not that it can be seen as offensive,,,Its just plain stupid IMO.

This is all moot anyways since we cant score

The Devils are a private company that depends on the fans to make profit out of their business. You can't constantly tell the fans to **** off and expect them to keep saying yes sir, can I have more?

I don't see how you don't understand that you are doing the exact same thing, BG. You may think 'Team X sucks' is not classy and dumb, but many other people could care less. That's purely a matter of OPINION. You're being every bit as obstinate by stating it as fact and calling people white trash as the people who complain they won't go to games because of the song.

To parallel,

If you owned a business like say.. Subways. Would you be okay with paying customers coming in and cursing people out?

I disagree with them taking away but if you can't see why the Devils would want to stop the chant, you're not looking at things correctly.

Saying "You suck" is now cursing people out?

I know people say we have a 'young fanbase' but its not a bunch of 6 year olds.

That is my video indeed.:handclap:

I'd be up for Seven Nation Army, as long as the Islanders have stopped trying to make it their "thing".

Islanders haven't stopped, their fans at The Rock were chanting it for half the night. I don't want to go from one cliche song which at least had something fun with it to another cliche song.

Try something new instead.

"parallel"

sort of a key word there. not the same, but similar.

So you'd be okay with people in your business telling others "You suck"?

If you can't understand why the Devils would want the chant to be changed, you're not thinking things through. That doesn't make them right.. but you need to be able to see the other side of things here.

They think its turning fans away. Personally, I like the chant. It gets the crowd engaged. I think it helps more than it hurts as a fun crowd atmosphere attracts more people than the usage of the word "sucks".

Correct, and right now it's the only opinion that matters, because it happens to be the one the stakeholder shares.

Until they cave that is.

<-------- Still pretty sure the Devils will cave on this.

There is a 'slight' difference between walking in to some small Subway or business and screaming something, as opposed to screaming the same thing in a giant arena with 18,000 other people in it. Very little in sports can be paralleled to real life.
