Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Which of those American players "wanted out"? The guys who left as free agents all spent 10+ years in Toronto, signed multiple contracts with the team, and (with the exception of Key) showed serious signs of decline before they left.

Halladay wanted out because he wanted to win and the Jays needed to rebuild, not because he didn't want to play in Canada.

Hell, Wells signed on to spend the rest of his career here and only got traded because the team had a chance to move a terrible contract.
As a Canadian born American I get why there has never been a career Jay like the post was discussing.

I think Barger is in the mix as well.
Heineman, Schneider, Wagner makes 10

Barger is 11 (and pretty much a lock)

2 OF make 13.

You have Kirk, Vlad, Gimenez, Bichette, Clement, Springer, Santander as your 7 locks before the spring.

If the team prefers Santander and Springer to DH more often, then someone is playing LF a lot (Barger/Roden/Schneider)

If they want to have Varsho D, then Straw makes it and they let him hit for a week or two to see what they want to do (keeping him requires a 40 man spot, but if they option him a week in, they can option him next year without issue)

Edit: forgot Berroa in this

If I am being honest, Lukes is likely the lowest man of the group because he's not a great CF (might not be better than Roden right now), isn't as fast, but offers hitting in an OF that might need 2 bad D OF out there.

There aren't very many one-career-one-team players in MLB or any other sport to begin with. Why? Because it's a cut throat, no loyalty business. Let's not assume we're just some Canadian door mat and every team south of the border are the glamorous LA Dodgers.

By my count, both can make it (Straw is a likely 4th OF in the Zimmer mold (Tapia offensive upside)
Yeah and Barger can be in the corner OF AND 3B mix.

Straw isn’t on the 40 man though, so that’s working against him, as I suspect they want to add Yarborough too. Could mean a small deal to make space prior to tomorrow’s deadline.

I think you just DFA Lovelady to add Yarbrough, but the next move feels a bit more complicated. I don't know how long Burr and Macko are out, but they may be candidates for the 60-day IL.

I think Berroa (specifcally if Straw makes it) and Robertson could also be DFA candidates.

Not sure about Burr, but Macko was optioned to the minors earlier this month, which I don't think would have happened if he was a 60-day IL candidate.

Berroa’s got options yet.
Agree on Robertson.
I’m not a big fan of losing anyone on account of Straw….. I’d be fine with Berroa and Lukes holding down the fort.

Agreed. Berroa as a more defense/baserunning option and Lukes as a solid lefty bat.

Honestly, I would dfa Lukes if they choose Straw.

At this point, Clase, Loperfido and whichever guy doesn't start in the bigs is your OF. Straw is likely 4th of either up or down, but Lukes doesn't really fit the bill, do he either wins the job as CF while Varsho is out or he doesn't make sense.

Yeah, that’s an option, but ya kinda gotta feel for Lukes putting in all that good time at AAA without getting much of a chance.

You know you’ll get good at bats, decent D.

I don’t mind him getting a lil run while the OF kids percolate abit. Though, gotta acknowledge Roden ….he has maybe done everything he could possibly do this spring to earn a role. Won’t be long for him.
