Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Lukes and Barger surprise me. Although, I think Barger gets more reps at AAA.
Lukes is out of options.

I could see a deal happening if they like Straw as 4th OF. Otherwise, Straw goes down when Varsho comes back (he also has options).

I would have kept Barger either way as another IF.

The only way this makes sense to me is if you want to rotate Santander - Straw - Soringer outfield (Wagner DH) with Roden - Lukes - Springer/Santander (with the other RF DHing)

I'm kind of surprised (in a good way) that they gave Roden a spot instead of just keeping him in AAA for a bit.

I don't really get keeping Lukes and Straw though... I think the roster is clearly better with one of them plus Barger. You're right about playing time, though... It's already gonna be tough to find time for everyone who needs it, so there probably wouldn't be much for Barger anyway.

Pretty sure Lukes has an option left.

Both Straw and Roden need added to the 40 man.
Yarborough would need one too. I guess Berroa moves down soon.
Springer, Santander, Lukes, Roden, Straw
Guerrero, Bichette, Gimenez, Clement, Wagner, Schneider
Kink, Heinemann
That’s 13.
Sparse at bats for a couple guys til Varaho comes back.

AAA: plenty of offense. 40 man guys:
Berroa Clase Loperfido
Kasevich Jimenez Martinez Barger

Minor league (not in 40 man, may be some trimming here)
WRobertson DeBrown
Tirotta Palmegiani Turconi Stefanic Nunez (had a great ML spring)
Clarke, Bethancourt, Sanchez, Whatley

Plenty of position depth and understated upside.

AA gonna have a sneaky good offence too.

Lukes still has 1 option year left per Fangraphs.

On a recent At The Letters pod, Arden Zwelling outlined a scenario where if the Jays play 7 games in 7 days, Santander would play less than 5 of those games in the field (implying a minimum 3 DH games). It seems like Santander is going to DH a lot for this team.

This is what they probably end up going with as their lineup vs RHP:

3B Wagner
1B Vlad
DH Santander
SS Bo
LF Roden
RF Springer
2B Gimenez
C Kirk
CF Lukes

With Heineman, Clement, Schneider and Straw as the bench.

Maybe Lukes/Straw make a CF platoon for a bit?

Little bit surprised Barger didn't make the cut but it looks like a platoon DH is still on the table which is what i had hoped for.

Not going to fret keeping two OF at the moment since Varsho is going to miss some time, but i hope one of Lukes or Straw are gone once he's ready.

Shi reported that the Jays won't be adding Yarbrough after Arden tweeted this, so 1 cut left in the bullpen between Nance/Lovelady/Barnes.

Considering Schneider said he wants 2 LHPs in the bullpen, Little and Lovelady are probably locked in as the 2 LHPs, which likely means either Nance or Barnes gets the last spot. Barnes also has an opt-out, while Nance is out of options.

Very happy to see Roden make the team. Been high on him since the '22 draft (which I thought had the potential to be one of the best Jays drafts in recent memory). Still not going to list Barriera as a true bust yet (Toman on the other hand...) but worst case scenario I think the Jays got two solid pulls in Kasevich and Roden, plus potential BP help in Fluharty/Jennings/Brock.

Schneider just confirmed on the broadcast that Lovelady and Barnes are getting the last two spots.

Fwiw, Yarborough's success is partially smoke and mirrors. There is a real path to Lovelady being an objectively good reliever.

I mean, his smoke and mirrors have worked pretty well for a long time.

But the main thing is that Scherzer's health is incredibly up-in-the-air and there is a very high chance that Rodriguez ends up in the rotation in pretty short order, and then suddenly they're going to need a bulk guy in the bullpen.

Wanting to work with Lovelady is fine but Barnes is 35 years old with an ERA+ of about 80 over the last 5 years.

So, DFA…..
Nance for Barnes
Who for Straw/Roden/Lovelady?
Two for Manoah/Bastardo to the 60-day….maybe Zach Pop?
