New 2024 25 Nahl Na3hl Season Thread

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

At NA3 level, offensive highlights are far more important for scouts to see than goaltending (low advancement position) or physical play (hits are hits, dime a dozen).

It's not the Cyclones as an organization relying on GFM handouts, it's a billet family raising money for their 3 house guests (and maybe other players if the campaign yields donations beyond the billet couple's initial costs). The billeters made a decision to open a GFM account to cover their "adopted" kids, and have made it clear in their solicitation that "this fundraiser is not affiliated with Wausau Cyclones organization, it is in direct support of Wausau Cyclone Players as individuals." NA3 is a pay-to-play league, so somebody other than the team is obligated to pay up to cover both regular season & playoff participation costs.

It also says: “The young men recently found out in order for them as a team to be able to go to playoffs, they are going to need each player to pay a staggering $1,350 per player within 2 weeks.“ So maybe the Cyclones aren’t soliciting donations as an organization, but this seems to apply to every member of the team. Team fees for the entire season are usually laid out very specifically at the beginning of the year, while this playoff fee seems like a previously unknown addition due to team fees being unable to cover playoff costs. As far as I know, most teams are able to pay for their playoff trips purely from initial fees that players agreed to at the beginning of the season. Maybe I’m missing something, but I’ve never seen anything like this before. I also wonder what happens if they don’t reach their goal?

Thanks for the additional info, as I couldn't initially access all content of the GFM post on my phone.

The GFM post entitled: "A NOTE FROM: Hockey Management Group - Wausau Cyclones" seems a very hollow excuse for the current conditions. I'm confident (in a sad way) that other members on this Board can recount similar tales of pay-to-play teams surprising players & parents (or as in this case, billet families) with last-minute demands for more money. This case looks like it's headed for an entry in The Junior Hockey News' ignoble Death Pool column. As for your closing question: "what happens if they don’t reach their goal?" ... Maybe the St. Louis Jr Blues will "earn" a Central Division playoff spot this year after all. :oops:

In the contract, It will state if there is payment needed for playoffs, etc. It's pretty clear. Most contracts I have seen are for regular season and possible playoffs, or just have an end date.

Maybe the owners were betting (figuratively OR literally :huh:) on the Cyclones' 1st place Division finish in the 2023-24 season being a fluke. "possible playoffs" assumptions make it difficult to manage cash flow for ALL parties.

Even if this was the case, you would think the owners would have started thinking about playoff costs at some earlier point in the year. It was clear that they were going to make the playoffs a long time ago.
