Good effort against an Avalanche team missing some key players.
Luongo was solid, maybe he can give himself a goal of collecting as many shutouts as possible this year?
Ballard - Tanev were very good. Ballard's transformation is nothing short of amazing and it has nothing to do with reputation - he used to make mistakes every game, and his passing was erratic. Now that he's playing with more confidence, his passing and decision-making have improved x fold. Tanev was solid - made so many tape to tape outlet passes, sometimes in tight quarters or while taking a hit, I stopped counting. Would have made a good QB in football.
Edler - Hamhuis were inconsistent. Practically gave up 3 breakaways in the 3rd period. Its not really surprising because Edler has never been a great defender and Hamhuis, who relies on his speed and mobility so much, is not in mid-season form (or not 100%).
Garrison - Bieksa they were "ok" - Bieksa I thought was pretty casual (see late 3rd period poor attempt to get puck out). Garrison is solid though he did get beat once on the outside and its apparent to me that his mobility is his weak point.
Sedins - Kassian. A few dominant shifts, unlucky not to get a couple more - seems to me timing is a little off. Kassian has great hands, period. One of the announcers called his goal a simple deflection but I'm pretty sure the puck deflected before it even got to him.
Higgins - Burr - Hansen. Very good. Higgins playing like we know he can though a little regression from Monday and obviously not yet in mid-season form. Burr was good (spectacular on the 5 on 3), took a lot of abuse this game. I'll believe it when I see it when we find a better 3rd line center (save for the face offs). Hansen was a honey badger, period.
Raymond - Schroeder - Wiese. So-so. Raymond lost the puck so many times, Schroeder was not active enough for my liking though he certainly can contribute offensively and Wiese I didn't notice except for his fight.
Volpatti - Malhotra - Lapierre. Very good. Lapierre - best game of the season, ditto for Malhotra. When Lapierre plays like this, he makes the 4th line serviceable.
Seemed to me that AV decided early on to play the Sedins and the Burr line, alternate between the Schroeder and Malhotra line, rinse and repeat. Maybe he figures this is the way to win until Kes returns? Worked tonight.
Still not very confident in the special teams' back end. For one thing, I don't understand why you would not play our best pairing (Ballard-Tanev) on the PK. Esp. Tanev being our most mobile dman, has a great stick and is right handed.
On the PP, I don't understand why they keep sending Hamhuis out there, he's just not moving the puck well. Neither is Garrison but at least he has a cannon. Bieksa is a better puck mover than H and G but then his shot is average. IMO, its time they gave Tanev and Ballard some PP time, though not necessarily together, to see what they can do.
