Sedins have only assisted on 2 of Kassian's 5 goals so far.

Nicklas Jensen can screen the goalie with his 6'3 frame and set himself in front of the net for tips and tap-ins but he isn't a power forward and won't be able to do it like Kassian does. He's a screen like Kesler or Eriksson.

He's much more suited to playing the halfwall on the power play, actively using his size and speed to get to, protect and move the puck and then using his insane shot to score or even playing the point. He's a sniper who has size and speed and can protect the puck, not a power forward who will grind their way to the front of the net and beat back defenders.
Now gillis just needs to get us a massive centerman who has tons of talent.

Good job by Luongo. Just can't say enough about how professional he's been going through all this. Solid performance tonight.

I still go back to CS vs CHI though.
LuongO = good for trade value
Luon8o = not good for trade value.

But we all know that when Luongo gets rolling, he can be unbeatable for a stretch. As long as he's in the top 23, it makes sense for AV to use him, especially when he's rolling.

I don't think one game is going to destroy Luongo's trade value when he has 730 games of experience at the NHL level. Everyone knows what he is by now.

Not bad, boys, not bad. Good to see some players get that monkey off their back.

Onto the game we've been waiting for all week now.

Good effort against an Avalanche team missing some key players.

Luongo was solid, maybe he can give himself a goal of collecting as many shutouts as possible this year? :sarcasm:

Ballard - Tanev were very good. Ballard's transformation is nothing short of amazing and it has nothing to do with reputation - he used to make mistakes every game, and his passing was erratic. Now that he's playing with more confidence, his passing and decision-making have improved x fold. Tanev was solid - made so many tape to tape outlet passes, sometimes in tight quarters or while taking a hit, I stopped counting. Would have made a good QB in football.

Edler - Hamhuis were inconsistent. Practically gave up 3 breakaways in the 3rd period. Its not really surprising because Edler has never been a great defender and Hamhuis, who relies on his speed and mobility so much, is not in mid-season form (or not 100%).

Garrison - Bieksa they were "ok" - Bieksa I thought was pretty casual (see late 3rd period poor attempt to get puck out). Garrison is solid though he did get beat once on the outside and its apparent to me that his mobility is his weak point.

Sedins - Kassian. A few dominant shifts, unlucky not to get a couple more - seems to me timing is a little off. Kassian has great hands, period. One of the announcers called his goal a simple deflection but I'm pretty sure the puck deflected before it even got to him.

Higgins - Burr - Hansen. Very good. Higgins playing like we know he can though a little regression from Monday and obviously not yet in mid-season form. Burr was good (spectacular on the 5 on 3), took a lot of abuse this game. I'll believe it when I see it when we find a better 3rd line center (save for the face offs). Hansen was a honey badger, period.

Raymond - Schroeder - Wiese. So-so. Raymond lost the puck so many times, Schroeder was not active enough for my liking though he certainly can contribute offensively and Wiese I didn't notice except for his fight.

Volpatti - Malhotra - Lapierre. Very good. Lapierre - best game of the season, ditto for Malhotra. When Lapierre plays like this, he makes the 4th line serviceable.

Seemed to me that AV decided early on to play the Sedins and the Burr line, alternate between the Schroeder and Malhotra line, rinse and repeat. Maybe he figures this is the way to win until Kes returns? Worked tonight.

Still not very confident in the special teams' back end. For one thing, I don't understand why you would not play our best pairing (Ballard-Tanev) on the PK. Esp. Tanev being our most mobile dman, has a great stick and is right handed.

On the PP, I don't understand why they keep sending Hamhuis out there, he's just not moving the puck well. Neither is Garrison but at least he has a cannon. Bieksa is a better puck mover than H and G but then his shot is average. IMO, its time they gave Tanev and Ballard some PP time, though not necessarily together, to see what they can do.

wasn't able to watch the game, how did Luongo play?

Lights out.

-----------------

Goodish game, I thought. Granted we were playing the Avs without more key players than us but at least we managed to actually hold onto a 2-0 lead this time. When the 5 on 3 came up, I was losing it. I was so sure the dam was about to burst. Had one of the soft, squishy things my wife hands me for those moments when it looks like I'm about to whip something at the tv during hockey games, but no damage done.

--Luongo: goaltending controversy anyone? :sarcasm: Looked like the old Lu there.
--Defense: still not good. Ballard and Tanev still our best defensive pairing by far. Hammy and Special Kev looked better, Mr Garrison and Eddy turning it around, but when it comes to breakouts, is anyone happy with our alleged top 4? Coverage in the D zone is still sloppy as hell. Chicago will eat us alive if that **** keeps up. Congrats to Garrison on goal #1. :handclap:
--Forwards: Sedins look as sloppy as I've ever seen them. Scary when they can't make crisp passes. Kassian scores again, yay! Best game for Burrows yet. Best game for Lappy yet (obviously). Not just for the great goal, but for seeing him not be bloody useless. 4th line very good; it's almost like they're the only forward line not embarrassed by trying to hem the other team in their zone in the last 5 minutes of a game when we're ahead. Higgins steadily improving. Raymond and Schroeder not quite as good as lately, but still had some nice possession moments. Manny creaking along. Hansen = Honey Badger don't give a **** about my analysis.
--Faceoffs still problematic.
--Passing sloppy as hell.
--Someone needs to learn how to get shots through.

--What the hell happened to Hedjuk? That guy used to be such a Canuck killer. Did he even play tonight? Think I noticed him once.
--McGinn manages to play a game against the Canucks without injuring one of our dmen. Yay! Our luck, he'd have probably wiped out Tanev and Ballard on one hit any other game.

Please don't crumble against the Blackhawks. Please? Also, Kassian: see that guy Keith over there? Go say hi.

I felt bitter sweet about the shutout in person. Warmed my heart to luuu once again at the arena. Lu.. The best goalie in franchise history.

Luongo is 2nd in SV% among goalies who've played in at least half their team's games:

Craig Anderson (OTT): .967
Roberto Luongo (VAN): .938
Antti Niemi (SJS): .933
Tuukka Rask (BOS): .932
Martin Brodeur (NJ): .932

Not bad for a guy we almost got rid of.... Vezina contender? :sarcasm:

Agreed. Hamhuis has really been a sore point so far. It's like he and Ballard swapped brains after the lockout ended. The giveaways are just...not fun to watch. Against a depleted Avs team, we get by. Against SJ or LA or...Chicago *shudder*...he really has to stop doing that.

I've heard of this guy.. Ryan.. Kesler?

I've heard of him on and off. I hear he has a pretty good resume though working in the community at local stores like Tim Hortons and Save-on-Foods. Seems like a hardworker. Hopefully our scouts take a look at him.

Seriously you guys, did anyone else see on the pregame show where Gary Valk was saying how high Luongo was, and Don was all like "not the regular Vancouver high, that's not what he means...I don't think" and it was hilarious? He was so high! Hahaha

I don't think its a coincidence the team looked fitter and more energized after playing a game that resembled a bag skate a few nights ago. Their skating legs are coming back. Fitness was my biggest concern since the season started.

Also I'm bummed the Avs lost. Have family playing for them.

Shortshorts Game Review

That was an awesome game to go to! First one in 3 years!! And, row 8 to boot! :D

Random Notes:

The crowd really picked it up during the end of the 2nd period and during the 3rd period. It was loud in there. What I did notice however, were the suits leaving early... 10 minutes left in the third and a group of girls who sat beside us left. They looked like they were forced to go, I was actually upset that a real fan couldn't sit there. The quiet in the arena is a combination of the suits, and the audio feed.

DJ Dave (who I actually thought played some good tracks today) and the Canucks management are working on a new intro.

Game notes:

We started off really slow until the Weise fight. Thankfully the Av's started really slow too. On that note..

Our fourth line ****ing rocks. Volpatti Malhotra Lapierre, were crushing people all game. They were relentless. Volpatti especially, who did not end a single shift without finishing his check. Love it. Lapierre was also rewarded with a goal. The great thing is you saw the entire fourth line light up when they scored.

Raymond Schroeder Weise is a fantastic line and are very solid defensively. They are going to be a major threat when they get relegated to the third line. However, on that note, Raymond was having some tunnel vision today. Still played well, but not well offensively. Weise is a wrecking ball, but clearing a 3rd liner and not a 2nd liner.

Higgins Burrows Hansen line was okay. Burrows was being a pest all night and causing havoc. His best game of the season in my mind; and I have been really hard on him. Hansen had a typical honeybadger game. If Hansen had hands he would be a top 6 forward. Higgins was still really quiet but he did play better.

Sedin Sedin Kassian just dominated every shift. Had the arena clapping and cheering all shift. However, the scoring isn't there. Their passing is on point, but there was a moment where Daniel was empty in the slot and missed wide. I am hopeful though, they were back checking monsters today and were creating offense. The scoring will come.

Kassian is just ridiculous. He skates funny though

Edler played like a #1 all game. Absolutely perfect game.

These pairings are so much better.
Bieksa actually calms down Garrison and Hamhuis does the same for Edler. Great games all around.

Ballard and Tanev again were spectacular. Anyone calling Ballard a diver is ridiculous. He was in the slot ready to release where he got tangled up.

Luongo was spectacular. You can tell all three games he was fighting to show the he's still the #1. I still believe he is.

Awesome game all around. No complaints. I absolutely love the hits our team was giving out. Great fun game to go to!! :D

wasn't able to watch the game, how did Luongo play?

Also, Kassian has got me eating crow. He's been the best Canuck this season. I was one of the biggest hater of the trade.

Nothing wrong with not liking the trade, but if anything you gotta chalk up the negativity to classic Vancouver demeanor of bashing anything that is possible to be bashed. Even if you aren't from here, it rubs off on you being a Canuck fan.

That said, Kassian is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. The guy works his tail off so far for a guy that plays his kind of game.

Luongo obviously looked very good tonight, but I'm hoping the Canucks roll with Schneider against the Hawks.

Schneider is the #1 goalie and these are the types of games that he needs to play in order to get into a groove. The Canucks need to give him that opportunity.

Imagine how high his cult status will reach in Vancouver if he rag dolls Keith off the opening face-off :handclap:

Again.. There is no way Ballard dived. He was right in the middle of the slot, just about to release his shot. He got tangled up and dragged down.

Was that the one where he tried to cut through two defenders into the slot? I had a pretty good view in-house and it was the right call. Clearly tripped up.
