News Article: NCC putting in a lot of conditions for the downtown site

Are there no rich people in Toronto? Montreal? Vancouver?

All those rinks have limited parking, but believe me, if you own a $10M home on Lakeshore in Oakville and want to drive your Maserati to the game, you’re not going to have to cruise down Bay looking for a surface lot with a spot available. There’s valet at Scotiabank waiting for you.

It’ll be the same here.

The debate is do they need to provide $20 parking for Billy who’s driving his leased Silverado in from Almonte? And the answer is no. Billy can go to a park and ride or park at any of the existing lots around the area and make the 25 minute walk to the rink.

Or he can just take his leased Silverado and park 10 mins away for $20...I'm sure the parking garages which are empty after 5 will welcome the game traffic.

Who the heck is going to princess auto or Bass pro shop after the game to celebrate a win?

"Sens just won a playoff game...let's go to Canadian Tire and buy a mastercraft screwdriver set!...oh wait, they closed at 9...let's go home"

I was responding to "there's nothing around the CTC" not "there's no places to celebrate after the game".

Parking is a big issue that the Sens want and need. The ownership group is very big with very well off partners. These partners have many many well off friends and associates who want to drive their cars to the games. They will not take an uber, public transit especially in the throes of winter. Valet is a must. I don’t know if you have been to games in the early spring or late fall, but the valet is littered with Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Bentleys. You don’t want to push them into public transit. That’s a fatal mistake. These people have luxury boxes and are part of philanthropy with the Senators Foundation. You want to make them happy.

And pissing on people's lawns is what, neighborly? Your mom help you up into that high horse?

This thread has really brought out the suburban fans who don't care about or understand city planning and infrastructure development. You all chose to live in the suburbs. That's your problem. Don't expect the entire city to cater to your need to drive to a hockey game 5 times a year.

Lets make the parkway into a highway!

Lets widen more streets to deal with single event traffic!

More parking garages!

If the city cent design transit so that I never have to transfer ever, then I'm never using it!

More like, living in the country I can have a 1.2k sqft home with a front and back yard for the same price as a 400 sqft apartment downtown with cardboard walls and surrounded by people screaming and yelling 24/7.

I still don't know how anyone can afford to live in the city. Prices are insane.

With a new arena such a long way away, they'd do well to immediately update the in-arena restaurant selection and experience at the CTC. So many comments about nothing to do around the arena and nowhere to go except Jack Astors and those kinds of spots. They could take a page out of the books of the Bell Centre and Scotiabank Arena, offering restaurant experiences that are aiming higher than Bert's Bar. Give people a reason to come to the arena at 5PM for a great pre-game meal. Learn how to capture those revenue dollars.

Or why anyone with kids would want to. No places to play whereas the suburbs have ravines to mountain bike and endless soccer field and baseball diamonds...and quiet streets to play street hockey...the list goes on.

That's not nearly as enticing as flooding out onto a boulevard with 40 different restaurants and bars within a 15 min walk.

I don't disagree that in the meantime, they should do something...it's just that something doesn't entice me specifically.

Adding another couple restaurants to the concourse doesn't make me want to go to the arena early.

I like walking around and having $2 road beers...maybe some bowls...and just walk around enjoying the atmosphere.

Maybe if they sold $4 beers before the puck drops, I would go walk around with friends for an hour before having beers.

With $15 beers inside, the hour before is crucial to downing a few cheap beers to get the buzz going. Especially before a playoff game.

Let me know the next time you see kids outside playing especially playing street hockey or playing baseball. Shooting on a net doesn't count.

just sneak in a mickey of your favorite liquor and just buy pop to mix it with. For the cost of one beer you and a friend can catch a good buzz.

Kids play at the corner of my street all the time and me and my wife complain that they're super rude. They like slam their sticks when a car comes out of frustration and don't move the net until the last second, and lazily at that...and even fake slap shots at the cars or yelling "come on!"

I need to talk some sense in to them. 15-20 years ago we yelled "car!" As soon as a cat came in sight and everyone moved aside right away and smiled and waved at the cars.

Totally different times.

At our rental before we bought, a 4 min drive away, there were never any hockey games...most of the kids there were of non caucasian descent, so they were more into basketball and soccer. Has basketball and soccer games on the street.

I remember playing street hockey every day after school during the battle of Ontario. Everyone wearing the new swoosh jersey with Hossa on the back, or something.

I remember playing football on the street. Baseball even...or jackpot...remember jackpot? That was fun. Plenty of variations of that game.

But growing up on a quiet side street with a ravine in the back with plenty of kids your age is golden. Multiple parks and soccer field and baseball diamond within walking distance. Amazing stuff.

Yeah...but sometimes you just dont want hard liquor and want a couple nice strong IPAs to get the buzz going.

Bring 3 tall cans of 7.5% on the bus or whatever and when you get off, drink them around the arena where all the fun is happening. (If downtown) Then maybe just buy 1 or 2 inside to limit how much you spend.

But the Mickey is a good idea too. Order a coke do your thing.

Hard to negotiate with career politicians. These guys have egos and have had their butts Kissed for every project they've worked on. This is not the first time and this won't be the last time. How we hear how hard it is to deal with these guys. I am sure it won't be any easier to have them as your landlord. If the Senators walked away from these guys and said it's not worth the headache, I would totally understand. They have been difficult even during the Eugene, yours. I tell you I wouldn't be sorry if they ended up walking away from the NCC deal and do their own thing somewhere else. The NCC is government bureaucracy red tape at its finest.

Dude, I'm mocking people for a lot more than just that.

This thread is full of people who won't look past their own nose. Those would be the people complaining about ped and bike pathing; demanding the city widen roads and convert the parkway into a highway (f***ing hilarious IMO); how marginalized they are that transit accessed should be prioritized ahead of driving to the rink; that there won't be enough parking; that it will take them longer to get to the rink than it does now (like it's not an hour+ one way now if you don't live near the current rink); or any stupid argument that is so focused on how this affects ~40/365 days of the year because they've seemingly forgot or don't care that this is an Events Centre that will host events year round.

People are providing more than enough reasons to be mocked, and to a man, they are all people who would be inconvenienced by the arena being located anywhere but where it currently is.

Tough. Shit.
At this point I'm just waiting for your NotJustBikes video link

If the NCC was a real organization wanting the best for the city they would have had 3 arenas built by now in the time they’ve been fumbling around Lebreton - I the NCC is a make work project for people who don’t want to live with consequences but want a nice pension

No joke this arena at Lebreton has been discussed since the 90s before the Sens ever played an NHL game and they still can’t get their act together.

The NCC is an embarrassment to people born with a work ethic and an insult to people who want to invest in this city.

TD place has 1000.

Montreal and Toronto have ~250, but there are a ton of options available (garages and surfaced lots) within 10 minutes walking.

Ottawa has those, but not as many, and they're a bit further away from the proposed site.

I'd expect a compromise of 750-1000 spots at much higher prices than what we currently have at the CTC. A portion of that cost will be sold as a "tax" to benefit transit/pedestrians.

If you currently valet... you'll be fine. You won't have to rub shoulders with the commoners on the train, don't worry.
Rubbing shoulder shas nothing to do with it , you twat. I'm not waiting an hour to get out of the parking lot.
I have no issues taking school busses to Lansdowne, but that is not 22-30 times a year.

Many people in Toronto’s lower bowl walk more than 10 minutes.
Apples and oranges.

Toronto is a different transit animal with a well established train culture. Subway culture. Streetcar culture. They think nothing of an hour in traffic. In Ottawa, that will ruin someone's weel.

Assuming you meant week.... a lot of peoples week's must be ruined first thing Monday morning because of their hour long commute to work.

Whatever you think of the NCC, there has been one form of it or another in Ottawa since 1899. For better or worse, they aren't going to go away anytime soon.

BTW - any luck tracking down that 15k LRT ridership number from yesterday you were floating around?

We did in the 1950s. Train station was across from Chateau Laurier and the train went from Renfrew out to Hawkesbury. Ottawa got rid of most of it for buses. Now they're removing busses for LRT.
Figured you'd enjoy this: The NFB asked Buster Keaton to shoot a version of The Rail Rodder in Canada - he went from East to West Coast, and passed through Ottawa on the old rail lines downtown:

Before that, Downtown Ottawa along the Canal looked super different:

As the railroad was planned to extend through downtown, the original concept was to have a large rail bridge spanning over the East side of the Basin, but it was determined that filling it in was a cheaper option (ironically, the MacKenzie King bridge spans roughly where it used to be). The West side of the Basin was changed into Confederation Park, and of course City Hall eventually ended up at Cartier Square.

This would give a much different feel to the downtown core: imagine having a small marina downtown? Sounds pretty cool to me - OK, maybe not at the time, when the Canal was a cesspool!

Traffic is not commute. When someone is prepared for a commute, that is different than unexpected traffic, which happens all the time, randomly, in Toronto. They think nothing of it. Ottawa? People lose their shit after 10 minutes. We are a car culture, not by choice.

if they can make LRT, then great. But the park and rides will need to be able to accommodate the fans, because I don't see that happening right now. Yes, we are 6 years away, and one can dream for a stop that is either underneath or built into the arena like the airport, for those I can be more on board with it. But I plan on driving and I hope there will be enough spots on site
