The North Carolina Tar Heels may be sniffing around possibly starting a D1 program.

According to WRAL, a news radio company based out of the Tobacco Road triangle in North Carolina, boosters for the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill are getting money together to build a new arena and facilities that would be capable of supporting a college hockey program on a plot of land not far off of I-40 in Hillsborough, NC. This 3.99 acre plot of land will host an arena according to the plans laid out by UNC Booster Greg Mooney, saying quote:

"We are grateful to the NHL and The Carolina Hurricanes hockey club for their unwavering commitment to success. They have led the way and turned ice hockey into a growth sport across our region...Our collective vision is to build a 2,000 seat arena for organized ice hockey programs, that serves double duty as a local gathering spot for residents to enjoy. The path ahead is still long, however our team’s dream took a very important, very big, first step towards reality today."

It should be noted that, with what's outlined in this plan, it seems more geared towards club and ACHA hockey at the moment. Still...this is a massive investment

Hockey East is winning out of conference with a .669 percentage. Yet, several who could won’t make the NCAA’s 16.
They need to expand the tournament to 32 the regionals are stale and it should be campus games until the frozen four. Cut out the nonsense 2 week delay and have it the same weekend as basketball FF.

Big win right before the U20 starts. Eagles will be missing a big chunk of there team WJHC.

But smartly did not schedule any games during the break. Only an exhibition.

32 way too many. I could see 18 or 20 with some on campus games.

Right now the top 4 in PWR are all Eastern teams and three from Hockey East. As of today 6 of the 16 team field would be from Hockey East. Impressive.

Six HE teams in the top 11 Pairwise and RPI, but conference tourney automatic bids will cut that down to probably four for the NCAAs. Agreed that 32 is too many teams, but they’ve got to expand beyond 16. Really good teams are going to be kept out.

Speaking of Regionals

I have to wait until the bracket’s announced before I can buy tickets for either Springfield or Providence. UMass is the host in Springfield, so if they make it, they’ll be there.

Well, in most cases the auto bids still do come from teams that are already in the field. Usually I would say the top 12 in the PWR are safe. At 13/14 then you open yourself up to upset auto bids. If I had to bet I would say UNH will end up fading a bit in the 2nd half. But BC, BU, Maine, PC and UMass...they are all looking pretty good right now. Great year for Hockey East. I can't remember the last time the top 4 in the PWR were all Eastern teams at this point in the season.

I think there is an NCAA rule that bases the number of teams you can have in championship tournament on a certain percentage of the number of teams that play the sport.

As an example the current PWR would be very easy for the committee:

Springfield:

1. Quinnipiac (1)
2. Denver (8)
3. UMass (9)
4. Minnesota State (16)

Providence:

1. BU (2)
2. Michigan State (7)
3. Providence (10)
4. RIT (15)

Maryland Heights, Missouri

1. Maine (3)
2. Wisconsin (6)
3. Western Michigan (11)
4. St. Cloud State (14)

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

1. BC (4)
2. North Dakota (5)
3. New Hampshire (12)
4. Minnesota (13)

Perfect bracket integrity and great for attendance in three of the regionals. The wasteland for attendance this year will be the random one in Missouri. It won't matter who goes there.

If it does end up where more than two number one seeds are Eastern schools it's an absolutely brutal draw if you have to go out to Sioux Falls and potentially have to beat Minnesota and North Dakota.

32 is wa-a-ay too many, 16 is just right, given the number of D-I teams. For my part, it makes all regular season games vital, as one bad stretch can send you down 5-10 spots in the PWR, and then it's either do-or-die in the conference tournament or sweat it out with the NCAA selections. Maybe add an on-campus play-in game or two in the future, but that's it.
