NBC Playoff Coverage

I love the playoffs, but every year I hate the fact that our games are covered by NBC and not MSG with Sam and Joe.

First, you have the pre-game, with Millbury and Keith Jones who really don't know enough about any of these teams to be providing sound analysis. They pick one or two plays from each period, and wing it, using small samples of evidence to frame their opinion on a player. Jonesy was a (marginal) former Flyer who almost never picks us to win and loves criticizing our star players when they don't perform. Millbury was with Boston and the Islanders throughout his entire playing/GM career and never forgets to discuss the poor play of the Rangers. I thought that these guys loved Ovechkin in the first series, but now they seem to love Boston even more. The only pre-game guy I like is JR, he knows the game better than those knuckleheads and is also more objective.

Then we get to the announcing. After listening to Doc over and over, I can't stand him anymore. He was a Devils announcer throughout his entire announcing career, he hates the Rangers. There's no question about it. You realize how happy he was when Henrique beat us last year in OT? We're lucky to not have to deal with him during this series, but instead we get Dave Strader and Pierre. Strader is a good announcer but he also seems to despise us, he kept going on and on about Boston's young D and even said "and now the chant is LUNDQVIST LUNDQVIST" with glee. Then there's Pierre who, in my opinion, needs to move up to the booth if Eddy Olcyzk isn't there. Since he's on the ice level, every time Boston scored he would end up screaming into his headset to analyze the play (because it was so loud on ice level) and it was just flat-out awful to listen to. I don't question his hockey IQ, I just dislike the set-up, and I would rather have Engblom or Pang be the sideline guy.

Dealing with this NBC coverage makes me miss Sam and Joe even more. It's a shame that Doc has the reputation of being the best hockey announcer right now, where to me he's not even in my top-10. CBC has it right, Jim Hughson is the best play-by-play hockey announcer right now, and has been since Gary Thorne.

Olzcyk loves to distance himself from the Rangers, they will show Mess or Gravy and Emrick will say Edzo you played on that Stanley Cup winner and Olzcyk replies, that was a long time ago...I love this 4th line of the Bruins

Thanks to gamecenter live I've been watching CBC and TSN the whole way through. It kind of sucked that I couldn't get MSG in the first round though. CBC is awesome... TSN definitely isn't as good but is a step above NBC. I can't say I've missed Eddie O or Mike Milbury too much.

Not to mention: what other major sport would not show a replay of all penalties.

Or post-whistle scrums.

Whether it's stupidly assuming I give a **** about whatever ridiculous segment Pierre has cooked up, or selectively editing to make the sport appear less violent, the coverage is flat out garbage.

Listen to Pierre. Might seem like he's bashing but these playoffs he's spot on.

Totally agree. It can sometimes be disconcerting since we are all used to hearing the 'Dolan-approved' announcers, but Pierre has been incisive about a LOT of things happening in this series.

Cant control himself, he just cant shutup, with his useless comments, intensity picking up, the boys are really chirping on the bench...horrible

Yea, I'd much rather hear Sam stumble through the "Foxwoods final 5," or Micheletti the homer making excuses for the Rangers.

My favorite is when Sam says, with six minutes left, 'Go to Foxwoods dot com...now!'

Really Sam? Should I turn the Ranger game off while I do that, or just leave it on as background noise while I look for a meal deal at Foxwoods?

I don't like the NBC coverage, but I do like Pierre in between the benches. I think most people don't like him because he has man crushes on certain players, and how he calls it from ice level. But I think he is just ultra passionate about hockey, and I like that. Also if people think he has been bashing the Rangers to much, he is just calling out the truth. He is much better than Joe, or John Giannone blabbering.

Pierre ripped the Rangers powerplay last night.

"No structure....freelancing" "These guys didnt just start playing hockey..."

it was refreshing to hear. Put the blame where it should be - on both the players and the coaching staff.

hate to break it to you but the rangers get ripped on in the intermission report because they deserve it. sure maybe the announcers like milbury or eddie O don't care for the rangers but if we played well we'd hear more praise than criticism. they don't have to be like the MSG feed and sugarcoat everything and make excuses for the rangers. you guys are just used to hearing sam and joe too much i guess.

and pierre has been spot on about our god awful PP this whole series. i loved his rant yesterday. only thing i didn't understand was why after he criticized the structure he went on to defend torts and then shift the blame to the players. maybe torts leaned over and threatened him

Pierre is the best thing NBC has going for it.

Joe and Sam get harder to listen to every season between the editorializing and mistakes. If you love something, let it go.

Your issue is with MSG not Sam Rosen. Do you think Sam writes his own copy? Do you think Sam is selling air time to Foxwoods? Sam is reading a commercial spot from an advertiser that is paying MSG a lot of money. What should Sam do? Rewrite the copy for MSG? Should he not say the advertisement? What's your solution?

if that doesn't say it all, what does...

He did make good points like that one and the one about clearing the puck out of the zone along the boards, when the center of the ice is wide open

Since he distanced himself from the Rangers, I have officially removed him from the 94 Black Aces.

Pierre should be moved into the booth so he doesn't have to scream over the crowd all the time like a madman.

There's really no need to have Pierre and Olczyk on the same broadcast team. Just fire Olczyk or move him to the C games. Micheletti consistently does an awesome job on NBC, so he should be moved to the B games.
