NBA Lessons For The NHL

Skip to 7:50 of this clip when he starts talking about NBA contracts.
Half is guaranteed money, the other half is all based off how many games you play, production, making playoffs etc
Would be an interesting way to get players to be more invested after inking 6-7 or 8 year deals.

I can't believe the NHL allowed 10-13 year deals like MLB back in the day
Feel the max contract should be 5-6 years in NHL or most other leagues.
1-2 years for your below average to above average players
3-4 years for your 2nd tier of players - 2nd pair D and middle 6 players
4-6 years for your top line players.

i get the injury aspect and security factor for players but the amounts theyre making in NBA insane and i can see why even with 3-5 year deals, the players can check out mentally and load manage as much as they do, they control the league in a way of how teams are folding to trade requests all the time from their star players.

NBA is a solved game, basically. It all comes down to the breakthrough of the Warriors. Baseball is similar that way.

Hockey is so entropy driven, how you manage the luck you're dealt is a huge part of greatness. I do think it will have its robotic moment but not anytime soon.

But the reality of kids and media these days is that real life sports aren't that interesting. Video games / immersive experiences will be king.

How can this be applied to the NHL exactly? What is the NHL equivalent of the 3pt shot spam?

I don't think NBA viewership is really down, i believe more people sail the high seas with good reason.
I agree entirely. The NBA has carved its games up between streamers so extensively that it's basically become pay-per-view. Don't get me started on the ridiculous premium you have to pay in Canada if you want to watch a team other than the Raptors.

The NBA deserves the decline, and let it be a lesson to the NHL.

What points exactly?

Stars are though sobs on painkillers
There is no equivalent to 3pts shots
The losing team don't look happy in the playoffs

TV blackout issues? Streaming is coming.

Lack of rivalries, too many games, de-emphasis on physicality, stat-driven analysis starts to make every team look like every other, increasingly too expensive for the would-be fan to follow even without attending, etc.

Pretty much everything that has been mentioned on this boards over the last several years as being unsatisfactory.

One might suggest that the embellishing is the NHL's equivalent to the 3pt shot.

NBA has their issues. From their massive TV deals, player's share has grown to where the top guys are averaging $50 mill per year on their contracts. Yet, with that, they load manage. You can't mess with the fanbase where players opt to sit out b2b games. Either reduce the games down by 10-12 if the players or get the players to play the back half at reduced minutes.

As for the 3 point shot, fans want to see good looks for 3, not just chucking it every time down the court. Only 1 Steph Curry. Take them if you have open looks.

Defense, teams need to actually play some D.

NFL has now taken over Xmas day games. Used to be an NBA day, with Quadruple headers, now, the NFL has taken over that day.

Stars have all of the power. Given the smaller roster and the impact a couple of players have on the team. Not much the NBA can do about that.

The NHL is affected by this too, make no mistake:

Why NBA and NHL TV Ratings Are Tanking – And What It Says About Sports Today - YYZsportsmedia

Who knew that punishing skill while building your product around teams in California, Nevada and Florida wouldn't lead to consistent viewership in other parts of the country/continent? Between that and beating to death the Winter Classic, Bettman is going to hand the next commish a nuclear potato.
The NBA and NFL do not punish skill, and I don't think NHL does either. The opposite. This is the offensive era, and defense is punished in those leagues. NHL has a officiating problem thats the only thing all these leagues have in common. NBA's unique issue is load management and arcade playstyle. Awful to watch and the players barely want to play.

Analytics ruined basketball. Watching teams trade three point attempts for 48 minutes is not very entertaining. The playoffs are still ok but for the regular season it’s hard to get into. Too many teams make the postseason that aren’t threats to do anything either so the regular season means almost nothing.

Biggest issue with the NHL (other than it being impossible to watch and piracy being the best way to watch it) is how few games are played between rivals. Why the hell does Montreal play Boston, Ottawa, and Toronto 3, 4, and 4 times respectively? Why are we not still doing the 8 games between rivals? Why do I need to see Montreal play at home and away against Seattle?

adding to all this, there's no intensity in the NBA game anymore. Even watching some of the finals last year to watch Maz get his ring, it had about all the intensity of a pre-season game from the 90s. The stars don't give a shit about loyalty or trying to build up their own team. They're looking to get their next payday elsewhere or to join whatever superteam.

The NBA has become a crap product. As the guys in the video point out: lack of creativity, 3 point spam, physicality taken out of the game, etc. Also, players half-ass it quite a bit and stars sit out. Far cry from 80s and 90s NBA when the league was entertaining and riding high.

The NHL, in contrast, has a load of great young creative players, it's still a very physical sport, stars very rarely sit when healthy, and the vast majority of nights effort is not an issue. The standings show how competitive the league is and how hard teams try.

For all its faults the NHL is still good entertainment. Very few people in the US play hockey compared to basketball, yet the league continues to get new teams in new markets and sell out many arenas. NHL fans are a dedicated bunch. The league is In a pretty good position given the economic situation and the explosion in competing entertainment options over the past decade or so.
