NBA Lessons For The NHL

What is the NHL equivalent of the 3pt shot spam?

The first thing that comes to mind for me is OT strategy. The constant circling back to re-set a rush that has to be just so, or otherwise it’s another trip back to the defensive zone to set it up again. All intended to set up one shot which is analytically favorable.

When they first started 3v3, it was ****ing incredible to watch the teams tear up and down the ice, trading wild chances while the goalies did acrobatics. That all died when data analysts told the coaches to NEVER allow a turnover, to spend 4:59 skating in slow circles if that’s what it takes to get one analytically-favorable shot.

I don’t know who ‘everyone’ is, but the only regular season I’ve fully enjoyed in eons is the covid one with exclusively division games.

There’s nothing more excruciating than sitting through another Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim; road trip. I end up on my phone for half of those games, desperately trying to care who wins.

There should be 8 games against each divisional opponent.

100% agree. I really enjoyed the COVID season where the schedule consisted of 2-3 game series against division rivals. It was like a mini-playoffs, where it was worth watching each game to watch storylines build up.

That was a brilliant way to make the regular season interesting but for some reason people really wanted to go back to the random potpourri schedule where 90% of the regular season looks like the same game being played on repeat.

I was being hyperbolic of course :)

But they did try this already. 05-06 through 07-08. Three seasons in which there was 8 games verse each divisional opponent. It sucked. The point was to try and emphasize rivalries, but instead it created monotony.

It was boring playing the same teams over and over again. I remember lots of complaining about it and the NHL ultimately had to move away from it.
