Possible controversy incoming. CBS showed a close up of Matsuyama's ball nestled in the rough behind 17 and he appeared to repeatedly press down on the grass behind it, potentially improving his lie.

Not sure if the PGA Tour will penalize him but there's going to be some questions raised, and if he wins it might get messy.

I'm not a golf nerd like you guys are clearly golf nerds, although it's going to be the only sport I can eventually play so I'm stacking the deck in my favor by researching ahead of time...

but to me, that ball didn't move. If it's still cushioned by the same grass that originally held it, it didn't move. All they did was gauge how "held" the ball was for the swing and better understand how to impart force and motion and see if the ball was basically on a "tee" for them again.

The ball moving isn't the relevant question to me. The "oscillation" without moving rule applies and obviously he's in the clear there.

Whether or not he improved the lie in a way that violates 8.1b is the question.

A player is allowed to lightly ground the club right in front of or behind the ball, which means just setting it down enough to support its weight. If that’s all a player’s doing, even if it creates an improvement to the lie there is no penalty — see Rule 8.1b. If, however, a player goes beyond that (say, from light tapping to mush-mush-mushing) and creates an improvement, under Rule 8.1(a) it’s the general penalty of two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.

This is why I said there may be kerfuffle (the article confirms this with the social media posts) but not sure if the Tour would penalize, especially if he won. It's too close a call.

To me it looked like a LOT of "tapping" that bordered on "pressing" that went beyond just setting up for your shot by letting the club weight rest, but I'm OK with the result standing.

My question now is, how much of this are these guys doing and getting away with?

Let me put it this way, I've never done that in a competition and would have trouble sleeping at night if I did.

I’ve seen that tap behind he ball on tv so many times I don’t even notice it anymore. Hideki has always done that motion as I recall seeing a similar thing with him years ago…it’s close to shady….but the Tour seems ok with it.

'Zards continued their tank last night against the Nuggets. Poole moved out of the starting lineup.

only a 41 point loss tonight
The all star break did no favors to what ever tiny bit of defense improvement they made after the coaching change but considering they gave up something like 80 points in the past to the Nuggs not surprised. About to throw on the game for a bit.
