Yeah, it’s working well so far with Ilkay pushing up…but I’d have started Füllkrug over LeGo.

Germany has had a noticeable weakness at center back for almost a decade….and they’ve STILL yet to address it. Goes to show you how poor their youth system truly is. There simply aren’t nearly enough impactful young German players. They’ve fallen off a cliff since 2014. And this is the worst stretch of football they’ve ever seen in their entire storied history.

Can because there's only one other holding midfielder in the pool and he's never really gotten a shot and the defense isn't good enough to hold without.

Could they possibly be any more inept and pathetic?

When will this end? When will they finally tear it all down and become accountable for their failures?

Can is also playing the best football of his life. Anyone criticizing Emre for starting is really just telling on themselves.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

I mean, when all you've managed to develop for a generation+ are attacking mids, you don't have a ton of options for fixing things. You either play lesser players that are actually capable in the roles needed, or you try to figure out a way to plug your best talent in and "make it work." They've generally opted for the latter.

Columbia dominating so far.

Not surprised.

Germany fans….how do you feel about all this? Being the laughing stock of all world football? Being embarrassed every time you play a match? Having your storied legacy become tarnished by this new era of bottom dwelling?

Let me guess….Content?

I was actually thinking about that the other day. Kimmich and Henrichs might work as defensive FBs with Gundo or Can behind Sane - Havertz - Musiala - Wirtz & Füllkrug.

“Might work” as in what exactly?

Is that going to be their answer in the big picture? No.

Columbia are so much better than Germany it’s almost hard to believe.

This truly is worse than 2000. Germany have fallen further than ever before.

and Müller. ;)

Sane can sort of play that role as well, no?

Oh I meant all 4 of Sane, Musiala, Wirtz, & Havertz between Füllkrug & Gundogan. Not having one of them partner him.

I think we need to play Can if we use attacking FBs, but if we play with defensive FBs then I think we can get away with Ilkay & the AMs.

Edit:
The Colombians are doing their best to hold on, but we really should be up by now. Can’t help but think we would be with Niclas instead of Leon.

I don't think it works without at least 1 attacking FB. You kind of set it how Bayern were playing a back 4, as Pavard would effectively slide into a 3rd CB role and unleashing Davies to go forward. The problem with that group of attacking players is they all want to go inside, so having at least the one fullback creating width is necessary. Really, part of the big issue with the attack, all the attacking players generally want to play the exact same way and move into the same exact spaces as each other, it's why they're fairly easy to contain.

How are u this blind? U think Germany should be “up by now”? What match are u watching?

How are u so calm and cool? This is literally the WORST GERMANY HAS EVER BEEN. They are in COMPLETE SHAMBLES….and you keep sitting here relentlessly confident and calm as if everything is going smoothly lol. It’s unreal. Don’t u feel the anguish? The sense of urgency? Do u not understand the standards? You should be screaming for Flick’s head. For major changes. For accountability. For some sign of improvement. Instead it’s like “meh, all we have to do is move so and so to this position and so and so to this other position and we’ll be fine”. It’s like you’re in complete denial.

I'm not sure that's such a problem. Sane & Wirtz both like to drift inside, but are also dangerous coming over the flanks, while Havertz & Musiala drift wide when that's where they can find open space.

Would just need to give them some time to gel playing that way behind Füllkrug. As we've seen with our most successful movements so far, having our creatives near each other isn't a bad thing if they're combining together and not just standing around.

We just need somebody to get on the end of all of those dangerous balls that we've wizzed right in front of the Colombian keeper and for the support to be there behind them in case of counters or attacks needing to be recycled.

You do realize that Columbia was hands down the better team in that 1st half don’t you?

65% possession, 1 shot. :(

Yeah. Basically exactly what I expected from this formation. The balance is fine, but there's no one in the box to tap the ball into the net. Füllkrug or Mouki in for Goretzka and we'd be up by multiple goals.

But Flick has pretty much admitted that this window wasn't as serious as the September window will be, when he'll pick more of the a-team and (hopefully) play the shapes we know work (4-2-3-1/4-1-4-1).
